Huiguang Chen is R.TCMP/R.Ac (Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner and…read moreAcupuncturist). This narrow storefront is almost hidden next to the bustle of the supermarket next door. Chinese herbs (both in original natural form to be taken home and decocted, and in pill form) are available at the counter on a walk-in basis. Acupuncture is better scheduled with a phone call in advance. I called over on a Wednesday morning, and was given a slot in that afternoon. The consultation area is in the back of the store, with a desk wedged into a compact space. The usual three-finger measure of pulse was taken (right hand on pillow, left hand on pillow), and ailments described in English were recorded in Chinese script. There seems to be two separate treatment beds, where each patient can lie down on his or her stomach, to have the needles applied (in the back, legs, neck and read). Electro-stimulation was applied for 20 minutes (and I dozed with the immediate relief). On this visit, I was prescribed herbs in pill form, rather than being given herbs to decoct (boil) at home. On request, Chen issued me a receipt with letterhead of The Canadian Society of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, presumably acceptable to my extended healthcare provider for reimbursement. The herb pills are not reimburseable, but they're a nominal cost. Payment is by cash only, with a bank on the corner if you forget. From 2005-2012, I had been going cross-town (to Dupont Street) to a senior TCM practitioner, with whom I have been very satisfied. Since I live on the east side, going locally saves me the crosstown commute. My treatment by Chen was as professional and competent as I have had with others in the past.

He does acupuncture, and can also diagnose and prescribe you traditional chinese medicine that you take home and boil. He has helped me so much. You can drop in for traditional chinese medicine, but acupuncture requires appointment. His hours are a little unique and it has always caused me confusion, so I am doing a public service here. He is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and open 10:30-6 otherwise. They both go to lunch from 1-2pm.

The space is calm quiet clean and relaxing but the best part for me is definitely Sarah's treatments. As others have written, she takes the time to listen to your issues, ask you further/clarifying questions and offer a treatment plan. She also consistently follows up on (and is open to revising) that plan - keeping records of your past issues, treatments and feedback (ie. How did you feel after we did these points?). Also, as a queer masc-leaning dyke, body work can be a rotten experience. Sarah has only ever been awesome. No weird assumptions or comments, and all the consent-practices you could hope for. I've recommended Sarah to several friends and when she's not available, I've heard that her colleagues are also excellent.

I was seeking out an acupuncturist to help me with sleep, lower back pain, digestion issues, and TMJ. Maria is so intuitive, knowledgeable, and kind. While I am so excited to get back home to Texas, I am sad to leave Maria and Acupuncture Center of Toronto. It's truly a place of healing!

I was skeptical of Massage Therapists because the ones that I had treatment from in the past were not proficient enough to assist me with rectifying my injuries and conditions, and let's say they didn't give forth a great effort. The RMT's at The Treatment Room actually care about your health, they are constantly improving because they care about the patients and their practice. Every visit you will have the same consistency of care (100 percent effort). The rooms are clean with calming decor and the RMT's are as professional as it gets. I recently moved to Edmonton Alberta 2 years ago and I am still looking at trying to find a RMT practice that even comes close to The Treatment Room. You will not find a better practice out there.

I was looking for: - a bit of ambiance (vs. a clinical/sports massage experience) - a knowledgeable and experienced RMT - a clean and comfortable experience - just the right amount of pressure (mix of deep pressure and relaxation) *If you're offered an essential oil during your massage (Rosewood!), that's a bonus! I'm getting ready to go on maternity leave within the next 2 months, and I'm booked for a massage every week! The Treatment Room is great and conveniently located near Chester Station. My only hesitation about recommending it, is that it may cause the massage schedule to fill up! :)

I've had massages but this massage was on a next level. He know what he's doing and knew exactly what my body needed. I came in with an extremely sore upper back and am leaving 50% better. DO NOT BOOK HERE FOR A PRENATAL MASSAGE…read more I left a message on my booking notes saying I needed a prenatal massage specialist as I'm 7 months pregnant, and to please confirm this would be possible. I received a call from Richard, the RMT who explained they have a prenatal massage table with a hole in it. I'm thinking, this is so great, I haven't been able to lie on my belly for 7 months. When I arrived for the massage, the questionnaire I filled out didn't have any pregnancy related questions. I was asked to get on the table and insert my belly into a 8 inch or so tall firm foam pillow with a hole cut out of it and a tight sheet draped over top. This was not a prenatal massage table, but rather a cheaper alternative. So I try to get into a comfortable position without any instructions, and place my belly hanging into this pillow/hole and my head and neck are way down still at the normal table level. I'm basically on my hands and knees or else I'm putting my whole weight onto this pregnancy pillow. The sheet is making the hole smaller and tighter since it doesn't stretch once I put my weight on it. It seemed fine at first, so I let the RMT know I was ready to begin the massage. Not even 5 minutes into the massage I'm feeling my lower abdomen start to cramp, I realize this hole isn't big enough or maybe I just need to reposition myself because I have a sharp foam corner cutting into my uterus clearly cutting off space for my baby to move around in there. I can feel the restricted kicks. So I try to reposition myself to make sure my belly is in the right spot, thinking I must be doing something wrong here. The only other positon I could fit on this foam platform in is to hang my boobs half off the sharp edge where the pillow ends. That was quite painful as well, but at least my baby is safer I'm thinking. I'm still not comfortable at all, but trying to be polite and I SO need this massage for my back. Time keeps passing and every 5 minutes feels like forever because of how uncomfortable I am. The sheet is so tight I can feel my belly is very squished. It's also 40 degrees Celsius in this room so I had to ask for more AC or a fan to be turned on. I finally tell Richard after 5 or 6 times readjusting and saying I'm not comfortable and him not taking a hint or asking how he can help that I don't think I fit in this hole. Instead of asking me what he can do to make my experience better, he asks if I'm having twins and tells me he's almost done. This would have been a perfect opportunity for him to worry about what the hole being too small could mean for the safety of my child. Instead, he prefers to rush through the end of the massage. I assume this means we're almost done since I'm not keeping track of time, but he continues to work on my back applying more pressure to a very sore belly at this point for what felt like forever. So I opted for a plank position so that I was no longer putting weight onto my belly, but hanging it loose instead. I should have asked him to stop, I shouldn't have worried about being polite at this point, but I continued to feel pressured not to say anything because the massage was "almost done". He now tells me to flip on my back and he'll work on my legs for the next 20 mins. I tell him I'm actually not supposed to be on my back at all this late in pregnancy (he should know this), but if it's just a couple of minutes I think it could be okay. I was honestly looking for anything to relieve the pressure on my belly at this point. After leaving the clinic, my belly immediately started to hurt, kind of like the feeling you get when you've been punched in a muscle. I assume this is from so much weight leaning on my tender uterus muscle. I'm starting to fear the worst, can this procedure be unsafe? Why would they offer it if it isn't safe? So I do some research when I get home and find out that no pregnant women should be asked to lie in this position for any amount of time, and that qualified prenatal specialists will have you in a side lying position. The pregnancy tables with a hole cut out are dangerous if you're too small or if you're too big for them. If you're too small, the belly hangs down and can cause unnecessary strain on your back and ligaments in your stomach that are designed to hold baby in place. there's also my situation, being too big for the hole. Especially in this situation where there is actually a firm surface at the end of a hole, your amniotic sac gets compressed and restricts movement for your child which could be seriously harmful. I'm not in complete disbelief. I trusted these medical experts. Yes, I should have researched first, but again, I trusted these medical experts. I can't help but feel like the money made from this massage was more important to this RMT and this practice than the safety of my child. DO NOT BOOK HERE FOR A PRENATAL MASSAGE.
