Would give zero stars, so packed, no management of number of people on the ice, they only check for wristband at the front, shoes everywhere, no where to put anything to keep from losing or being stolen, skates were very uncomfortable, rink is very very small. Needed ice resurfacing but has not been done frequently enough, was full of ridges and snow fluff all over the rink making it very hard to even make it around once. They did have socks and gloves for purchase and the salute rental was free/ bring your own. You have to pay for seating around the rink, and one hot cocoa was $15. I am by no means cheap, but the only good thing about this experience is "skating on the beach" is unique. read more

I come here almost every year around the holidays. The location is gorgeous and the light decorations covering the hotel are so picturesque. There is also food options nearby like the little cafe area selling drinks and pastries as well as the ice cream parlor. I will this is one of the more expensive places to ice skate in San Diego but the concept of skating right on the beach and the overall atmosphere is worth the price. I would recommend buying tickets online if you don't want to wait in line to buy tickets or risk them potentially selling out. It is quite crowded usually since it's a pretty small rink and the location is very popular so that's something to keep in mind. Overall I would recommend this as a fun holiday activity to go with friends or family! read more

First the view is beautiful. An ice rink on the beach at Hotel del Coronado. If you are going for the nostalgia, I would recommend. If you are a figure skater hoping to skate on a smooth surface at 40.00 for 90 minutes...it ain't happening. I chose to skate at 10:00am thinking the ice was fresh cut. I got on the ice only to find it completely covered in snow...from the rain overnight. It was like skating on peanut butter. The scoop is that they only cut the ice at 4:00pm. You would think they would cut the ice at least twice for the money you are paying. The only plus was the rink location and that the proceeds go to 'make a wish San Diego'. read more

For the price, the skating for 90 minutes is fine, however, we also purchased the frostbite rink side fire pit for 8. Purchased for $250 and then had a minimum purchase requirement. In total we dropped about $500+. The reservation started at 4:00, and didn't fire pit started until 4:45. Not enough waiters and the service was very poor. The venue is beautiful as it should. But for the price, it was incredibly overcrowded. Me and my date both thought we were in Disneyland based on how many people were around. We arrived 15 minutes into our time slot and the place was completely packed. The line to get our skates was short, but we waited 10 minutes just to find a place to put them on. There are no lockers so expect to put your shoes on the ground. It's likely safe, but just provides another place for people to queue to retrieve them. The rink itself was also very crowded and very difficult to navigate if you're not somewhat experienced. We witnessed a skater fall and possible break their ankle. It took 30 minutes to get him off the ice. Ice skating in 75° weather on the beach was surreal indeed, but I wouldn't do it again for the price. read more

This ice skating rink is a huge disappointment. The views are incredible. Don't get me wrong. The view of the del alongside the beach is wonderful, but that's pretty much the only good thing about this place. The rink is tiny and the ice is horrendous. It was all chopped up and hard to skate on. Your skates go straight into all the broken grooves. The rink was also covered in what I can only describe as snow cones. I wonder how often they zamboni the ice cause it's a mess. The cost is $30 and includes the skates. We were lucky to get tickets for $15 as part of a group deal. It would not have been worth $30. The atmosphere is to die for and the view is incredible. We skated at sunset so we had the treat of the beautiful colored beach sunset then the ambience of skating under Christmas lights. I think it is a must do for a once in a lifetime experience and I'm so happy that my daughter and I did it! A few negatives.. -No Christmas music. In fact, no music at all. But no big deal, my daughter gave me one of her EarPods and it made all the difference. -Not enough seating to put on your skates on a busy night. People were sitting on the ground putting them on. And not many spots to sit down and rest. -The skates. I heard so many people complaining about them. Including my daughter. We are experienced skaters and she said they sucked. I brought my own and that was a good choice. -Parking. We paid $45 to park in the hotel garage cause we couldn't find a spot on the street in time. Parking is discounted if you validate by buying something but no validation at the ice rink. -The cost. I pre-booked. After fees it came to $91 for two adults for a 90 minute session. ouch. It includes skates but no discount if you have your own. I suppose it doesn't surprise me that much, since the Del caters to the richest of the rich. I'm dreaming of a local's discount, then I *might* be back. Still, all and all, I'm giving it a 4 star because it was still a pretty amazing experience and I was smiling every second. read more

This sounds like a great idea but once you arrive, you're left with no parking options and a massive amount of people who may or may not of bought tickets. No one checks for wrist bands at the skates pick up or to get on the ice. Anyone can walk up and just hangout on the rails. They do not regulate the amount of people on the ice so when it's crowded it is near impossible to enjoy the moment. Your shoes have to be left with everyone else's under some benches that people end up kicking around. This is so unorganized and ran by teenagers. I would save your money and go to UTC or somewhere else. I seriously just wasted $100 for 15 mins. This has the opportunity to be amazing yet fails on so many levels. Probably one of the most up-scale ice skating rink venue, but it's justified by the amazing view of the white sandy Coronado Beach. Save this ice skating experience especially for the dusk hours. The rink is in an awesome location next to the Hotel Del Coronado and the beach. The hotel makes a beautiful backdrop at night with the lights. Although you can just barely see the water at night, you can hear the waves crashing and I imagine it would be quite stunning during the day. My friends and I went on a rare rainy San Diego evening and the rink was uncrowded. There was maybe 20 or so people skating, which left plenty of room. Even on a rainy night, it was still warm and I quickly shed my coat, scarf and gloves. Guess you don't necessarily have to dress for the cold when ice skating in San Diego. :) The biggest negative to this otherwise pleasant outdoor skating rink is the absurd $25 price tag. You can skate for an hour and a half but we only lasted for half the time because our feet were starting to hurt from the skates and really there's only so many times that you can skate around in a circle. If the price were a bit more reasonable, perhaps $15, I'd gladly give Skating by the Sea four stars but I've got to dock a star for the abnormally high cost. read more

Not the greatest experience. I only lasted for about 30 minutes ice skating because my ankles were hurting so bad due to the very cheap skates they provide. I highly recommend you bring your own if you own any. Once I put on the ice skates I could already feel the hard plastic rubbing my ankles and putting pressure against my ankles. I thought it was only my skates but I heard a handful of people complain about the skates. Pricing is also quite steep considering the skates they provide. The location was beautiful but that's about it. Not worth spending $40 to ice skate there. I'd rather go to UTC. read more

When it's not busy this place is great. But.... We went on Dec 30 and you could barely skate the rink was so crowded. I did my waivers online but had to do them again in person. There were skaters going the wrong way and a few very dangerous skaters that no one policed. The drink bar by rink we rink was nice to have. Sometimes the experience is enough (: The views are amazing- especially right before sunset. I could complain about the skate quality, and the ice quality.... but guys, it's right on the beach! Cute fun thing to do with a loved one. Was it worth the money? No, to be honest the blades or skates you rent are just a quarter inch thick of steel. Not sharpened one bit. It has no grip and more so a risk for injury for any kid or adult. You are on Ice you need grip if you have no grip you fall. Also the boots eat into your ankle with a godly amount of pain even if you are wearing ski socks or any thick sock in general.... That being said, do not wear any valuable shoes to this there is not 1 locker to store your valuables. If you where nice shoes and leave them outside the rink they will get stolen that is a fact! The skating by the sea experience is a great idea for hotel del Coronado it does bring lots of people out, bit it can be managed and organized so much better! Especially for such a 5 star hotel.... if you want a skating experience I would invest in a real experience or a place that invest in their skates more. (Grip is key for safety. They minimized the ice rink exponentially to fit in paid private seating. Had crowds of people waiting for 4 weak benches to clear up to put their skates on. Tons of EMPTY seats around a skating rink because they need to be paid for. When the rink first opened, it was big enough to take strides in. Now you can take 3 steps & already be in the middle of the damn rink. Everyone kept slipping & sliding & tripping on bumps cause they weren't sweeping enough (since it's so damn small). I hate how dumb & greedy Coronado is. No reason to price gouge. & No reason to defend price gouging. People know what they're paying for. Which is why it's a problem. If you're willing to pay just for some photos you can take there for free, so be it. If you're looking for a functional rink. This will be a waste of money. You're better off skating at Liberty station or the Kroc center. There's a reason why this is one of the worst reviewed rinks in SD. read more
