Went to get new skis mounted. Was told I need both boots to mount. Stated I previously been in the ski business for 30 years in SLC and stated it was not necessary to have both boots to mount. Was told by a 30 year SkiWorld employee "WELL.. you know everything!!" which I replied that comment was not necessary. Still took my skis, bindings, and boot to mount only to charge me $200 and then called me 3 days later...and tell me "we require 2 boots for mount warranty and I did not appreciate you telling my employee that her comment was not necessary." Crazy arrogant and poor customer service. Beware...second time my family has experienced this SkiWorld attitude. read more

ATTENTION IF LOOKING TO BUY SKI BOOTS!: Came here to buy ski boots for my wife and I. When we got into the store they pointed us to Ricky (owner and manager) since he does all ski boot fittings. He asked what we were looking for and I said we are looking to get fitted for some boots and see if we like any, immediately he said "sounds like you are just trying to buy online", I said "no honestly we are looking to get boots, neither of us have ever owned a pair or have ever been properly fitted for ski boots". He then said "all ski boot fittings are $100 since it takes time and I don't want to waste my time if you don't buy boots here". I said "Can we just try some on?" and he said "still $100, however if you buy the boots he will take off $100 for the boots". So I say "ok i will just do it then" so I could see the actual process (which is not really one at all haha). I go to pay and Ricky tells the cashier it's $100. She rings me up and has trouble since the boot fitting charge is only $50 in the system (so he double charged me- nice!) so a manager had to manually put in $100. I got fitted for the boots which was just trying on 3 separate pairs until one felt right. I found a good pair that fit and thought well I should get them so I don't just waste $100. I bought the boots but the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth and I felt like I got scammed. After talking to a lot of my buddies out west they said they have NEVER heard of any businesses ever charging a boot fitting fee and that this was just a scam to get money. His little ploy to make $100 caused me not to buy boots for my wife, bindings, and poles for both of us and the binding mounting fee ($200 - which is super high, REI does it for $70). So he missed out on atleast an extra $1000 due to his horrible business strategy. I decided to just take my business to Amazon and actually pay more for bindings online. I will always choose to spend more money if it's going to a small business but not if that business is super shady and impolite. Ski World knows they have a monopoly on the market here in VB and they are abusing it. Ricky, you get more bees with honey than with vinegar. Respect your customers, show them proper service and they will love to give you their money. Super disappointed with the service. DO BETTER! I'm in dire need of new ski pants...too bad this just isn't the spot. To start, I'm giving an extra star to the older gentleman that greeted me and asked if I needed any help. That was probably the only nice and intelligible interaction I had in this store all morning. Everything else was downhill from there. After trying on half a dozen pairs of pants, I realized that they maybe have one or two pairs of pants in the entire store that are for petite women. Now, bear in mind I'm only 5'3". Nearly all the pants are made for women at least three inches taller than me. So the young blonde asks me if I need any help, and I explained my dilemma. Don't trust the low reviews. I have had great service every time I've visited this store. They have excellent boot fitters and I walked out with a perfectly fitting pair of ski boots. The rental service is easy and reasonably priced. Their prices overall seem reasonable, and even competitive with some helmets, skis, and boots. I just love this local ski shop. Rick and all of the staff are more than happy to answer questions about gear or skiing in general. My husband and I were snowboarders for many years but once we had kids, we decided we wanted to teach them to ski. The staff at ski world were extremely helpful with us making that transition. We purchased our skis, boots, and clothing for our whole family. They have a great program for buying kids gear in which you can return it and put get part of the money back towards larger gear for the kids. . read more

Buyers beware. Terrible customer service and business practices. Bought a pair of pants and specifically made sure to ask the cashier the return policy, she stayed 14 days for full Refund as she handed me receipt. I didn't even think to read the receipt as I believed the woman who told me so. I then went out of town for business and did not have the opportunity to return the pants that I no longer wanted, till 10 days later. To my surprise, they were only willing to offer me store credit. They were not willing to work with me at all, which was frustrating as most people who have families and work for a living don't have time to run back to the store just three days after a purchase. VA beach is also not local to any ski mountains so the 3 day policy is absurd for people who are planning trips months in advanced. Stop being stingy with your outdated merchandise and be better people. To add, nothing in this store is new or worth writing home about. Half the shelves and pegs were empty or with little merchandise and what was there is mainly old styles and outdated merchandise. Basic as basic gets. This place is located on Laskin Rd. just east of the split between Virginia Beach Blvd and Laskin Rd. It is located on the service road that parallels the main road. I've passed by this place numerous times, but had never come in here. After many years of passing by, I came in last week looking for some winter stuff, such as gloves, mittens, and the like since winter is on the way. It was time to start replacing some of the old winter stuff that has been used for numerous years. It's always good to look at local businesses since they are not a "big box" and are in the community like us. Once inside, there was an immediate greeting with one of the staff members. I told her what I was looking for and she walked me around the store to check out the items available. They have a great selection of items in the place. If you need anything winter related, you should have no problem finding it here. Overall, this was a good store to visit. There wasn't anything that was above and beyond that would have me rate higher than three stars. Also, prices do tend to run higher than many other places, but that is to be expected with local businesses, but the cost differences were pretty big. This was a major reason why I didn't purchase anything at this time. If you're looking for something winter related (or even a few summer things during the spring and summer), you should still take a look and consider this place as an option. read more

There was a young guy there helping us who was super helpful & friendly. We were having a good experience until an older gentleman came over & asked if we needed help. We said yes we're looking for boots, to which he asked if we were looking to get sized & buy online or get sized & buy there. We were taken aback. I paused & said I'd like to figure out my size. He said he doesn't do that because that's a waste of time. He doesn't want to spend time sizing us only for us to go online & purchase. Turns out it's a $50 fee to even get sized there. You get the money back if you purchase from there, but if not then you lose the money. Ive never heard of a store doing that. Nor flat out refusing to help me figure out my size. The store had decent stock, but our experience with this man, which I infer from another poor review is Ricky (the owner and manager), sullied the entire experience. We left feeling like we didn't want to support an establishment who attacks customers like that. Overall do not recommend. Unless Ricky is not working that day. read more

I get it's tough having a ski shop at the beach, but save your time and go somewhere else. These guys should switch to selling surfboards. They just tried to charge me $150 bucks to adjust the DIN setting on my bindings and tried to call it a "remount". To top it off the guy behind counter gave me the "tough guy" attitude. If that guy was smart he would have known I had two kids and a wife that also needed to upgrade their skis and boots this year. Not here! read more

After asking multiple times to see the goggles, she demanded we come back another day whenever they're not busy... They had a handful of costumers in the building. Rude. Disrespectful. If I could give no stars I would. My husband took my younger brother here to get him sized for a snow board that we were planning on buying him. Most boards he had seen online so he needed to know his size. My brother texted me while he was there saying that they had a lot of the boots, bindings, and coats he liked. So I was most likely going to go here to purchase the gear he wanted but I could not go that day. The owner Ricky was working and is who my brother dealt with upon arrival. Who told my brother that he was "not going to size you for you to go buy a board online" after my brother returning to me discouraged and upset I called the store to speak to Ricky who stated to me that he offered to size him for a board they had in store but that he wasn't going to "waste his time" to size him for a board if he wasn't going to buy it from their store. I was just appalled by this. My little brother also showed him the type of board he liked which Ricky said "I would never by that board, you need to by this board" pushing a store board on him, again without sizing him. He also then began to attack me asking me "what do you do for living?!" Which I told him management and marketing and he said "well then how would you feel if you gave someone a price and they went with someone else!?" I said it happens everyday. It's part of the business but you do not build clientele by referring to them as a "waste of time" I then asked for a manager and he said "you're speaking to him" I then asked for the owner was and he said "what for?" I then said "fine I will find out on my own" and with a quick good search it seems Mr. Ricky is the owner of Ski World. I would not recommend this shop to anyone. read more

I am always up for supporting small businesses, so I gladly took my business to Ski World instead of going to Dicks or another corporate chain. The positive is that Ski World has a great selection of ski clothes and equipment, but that is where the positive ended for me. My interaction with the management was both terrible and laughable at the same time. The scenario: I purchased a pair of First Layer mid-weight pants. I got home, removed them from the packaging, and tried them on. They were too big. I double checked the label; and, with a closer look, I realized the sizing was printed incorrectly. Prep yourself for a teeny bit of arithmetic: The package was an L, and it said the hip size was 29-30 (when in fact it was 40-41). I stopped reading there and purchased the pants. Had I read further down the label while I was in the store, I would have noticed the waist was printed at 40-41....which would have meant the pants were designed to fit a very uniquely shaped lady. However I was in a rush and unaware that my inner Sherlock Holmes was required while shopping at Ski World, so I will gladly take fault for leaving home without my magnifying glass. Considering it was a harmless little mistake, I assumed the business would let me exchange the pants for the correct size. I went in the very next day to address the confusion, and here is a recap of my entertaining customer service experience: Me: Hi, I bought these yesterday and they are way too big. Can I switch them out for another size? Staff: Do you have your receipt? Me: (Looking for receipt) Oh, no. It's at home. But I was just in here yesterday, maybe someone will remember me? Staff: (Not looking up from the computer) You can't return long underwear because they are considered underwear....like a swim suit. Me: Oh. I didn't know that. But it doesn't say underwear on the package, it says 'Pants'. And no one told me that I couldn't return them. I didn't see a sign anywhere. Staff: (Keeps typing and not acknowledging me.) Me: And they are misprinted. Staff: Sorry. Frustrated, I leave the counter. My boyfriend then purchases a pair of socks and we begin to exit the store. Unsatisfied, I return to the cashier. Me: Excuse me, ma'am. I would like to see the manager. I understand your policy, but the package is mislabeled and the pants don't fit me. I am not sure why I should be out $50. The woman goes to the back. A man comes out with a grin on his face; and, before I can say a word, he says...Hi there. I'm sorry, but we can't return or exchange long underwear. I explain the entire issue, and he just nods at me condescendingly. I explain that I looked at the sizing on the package and purchased the pants. When I got home, I tried them on and realized they were too big and that the package was mislabeled. Manager: I am sorry ma'am, but we can't take them back because you tried them on. If you hadn't tried them on, we would have gladly taken them back. Me: Wait, huh? A minute ago you said you couldn't take them back, period. But now you say you can't take them back because I admitted to trying them on? But I tried them on WITH underwear...the same way I would have tried them on in the store? What's the difference? Manager: How can we know that for sure? Long underwear is considered the same as a swimsuit. Me: Ok, if thats your reasoning, what... Manager: (interrupting) Look. Long underwear are not meant to be worn with underwear. Imagine if I took the same pair home and tried them on, wore them, and then returned them, would you want to buy the same exact pair? We simply can't take clothes back once they have been tried on. (Ok, wait a minute, what?? First off, I don't want to imagine you going commando in your long johns and then lounging on your couch...but thanks for the visual.) Me: I hear you, but you are confusing me. First you say that you can't take them back because of store policy, and now you say you can't take them back because I tried them on and that I wouldn't want to buy something that someone else had tried on. But that makes no sense. People try clothes on all the time IN THE STORE. It is part of the process of purchasing clothes. And besides, the product is mislabeled! I will spare you the rest, but it just kept getting more and more ridiculous. He explained that his hands were tied. Which I find dubious considering small businesses have much more room to work with customers than large corporations with thick red tape. Bottom line, the staff was condescending, patronizing, and passive aggressive, not to mention that their reasoning for why they couldn't accommodate me was transparent and nonsensical. Perhaps they were just having a bad day, but regardless, it just felt like I was being fed a bunch of BS. Fortunately I can afford the $50 loss, and they just ended up looking foolish and losing my business. If you want good customer service, go elsewhere. If you want comedy, maybe give it a go. read more

After 10 years, I decided to drive into Ski World and see about one of the Western Ski Trips. I'd been skiing since the early 80's. So in checking it out, there was a trip going to Big Sky Montana. I'd always heard about those trips there but had never taken one. Well, let me say it was a trip of a lifetime. Everything went like clockwork. It was seamless. Every detail was taken care of. I love those trips where all you have to do is show up on time. From the moment I got on the plane to the time we came back home, everything was awesome. There were extra excursions planned if you wanted to go. One was a snow mobile day trip to see Old Faithful and back. It was amazing. Yellowstone has always been on a bucket list. Did I say that Big Sky is the Largest Ski Resort in the Nation. We skied and skied and skied. I never got in all the runs even after a week. It's a great resort and not just for experts. I'm what you'd consider a blue or intermediate skier. So there was tons of terrain perfect for me. In closing, I would just want to thank everyone at Ski World for all that went into making it a trip to remember. The rates and affordability for all we got was amazing. I just love package deals. My husband and I scheduled our first skiing/snowboarding trip this year with Ski World since our friend suggested we all go. We booked the trip with Ski World, and we even did rentals through them. We had to go to the shop for rentals, which was easy and great customer service. When the week finally approaches that we are supposed to go skiing/snowboarding there is a winter storm moving into the Hampton Roads area, which the states and city declare a state of emergency - I call the shop on Wednesday to see if the trip is still on, they say yes. I call them again Friday to see if the trip is still happening due to the storm moving in. Saturday when we wake up, there is snow, the roads aren't treated and basically everything is shut down. We get a call from Ski World around noon asking if we are going to pick up our rentals, because you have to pick them up the day before your trip and return them the day after. They inform me that they're closing early due to the road conditions but the trip is still on, and we're expected to come get our rentals for this trip. After a few more calls back and forth we decide it was not worth our safety since the city and state declared a state of emergency and the road conditions weren't passable. I am now informed we are loosing our entire trip money, we can't get our lift tickets even though I could possibly use them at a later time since they are not handed out until they are on the mountain. Cory then informs me that we could have moved it if we were so worried about the snow storm. Well I think good customer service would have been offering that FROM WHEN I STARTED CALLING ON WEDNESDAY! The only reason why I didn't give them a one star is that the rental process was smooth, and they allowed us to "transfer" one of our tickets last minute to someone else (literally had an hour to find someone who was willing to drive or walk to the shop at 4am to go on the trip.) This was our first time booking a trip with Ski World and with the lack of customer service, I do not think we'll be doing it again. read more

This is a pretty cool place. They do do ski trips throughout the winter season to places like Wintergreen in northern Virginia and Snowshoe in West Virginia for a fair price. They also do rentals for ski equipment and snowboard/bindings/boots for $30 a day. They sell a lot of cool gear to get you ready for going down the slopes! Service is pretty good, they're just a little slow. I've rented twice from them and it always took awhile for them to get to me. read more

Ski World is a mediocre store but the only game in town. Their selection is average for a ski shop and their staff are knowledgable if a bit opinionated. Where they fall short is in an incredibly pushy sales environment that simply will not take "no" or "just browsing" for an answer. As an example: A friend took in skis and bindings to be mounted (Ski World charges $100 if you don't buy the skis from them). When they called him to pick up the skis because they couldn't mount the bindings (they didn't have the proper equipment) their response was to try and sell him an extra pair of bindings! The manager knows I have purchased boots and skis from him but nonetheless asks me every time I'm there if I want to buy skis or boots. Prices are also significantly higher than on EVO or other online vendors. read more

Great shop with friendly people. After renting for years we decided to buy boots. As first time boot buyers I had no real knowledge of the technology or my needs. Ricky the owner took great care of us and answered all my questions. We arrived New Year's Eve at 10 AM to purchase boots for our upcoming trip to CO, though things were busy Ricky spent all the time we needed to make us comfortable. I was surprised to find this place in Virginia Beach... mostly because most stores/restaurants/etc are downright mediocre/shitty here. Needed a new set of snowboard bindings so I swung by. It's a pretty big store and I was impressed with the selection... tons of outerwear, boards, bindings, etc. Vince helped me out. He was friendly, and more importantly, he knew his stuff. We talked through the selection, I picked out a pair and he had them mounted in five minutes. Bottom line: good selection, knowledgeable crew and good prices. I went to Ski World to rent skis for a ski trip that I had planned. The trip was approximately 2 and a half weeks away. The rental workers were very helpful and I reserved skis, boots, and poles for approximately $105. The very next day I received notification from work (Military) of a conference that caused me to have to cancel my trip. I immediately contacted Ski World and asked for a refund since I had just placed the rental request and the skis had not been set up yet. They refused a refund and only offered store credit. Apparently, they do not issue refunds for anything at all. Once they have your money...it is theirs to keep, even if you did not utilize the rental. On top of that everything in the store is super overpriced, so a store credit will buy you something priced 200% more than the same product found elsewhere. I'm not sure how they keep customers with practices like this. I will definitely never go there again. If you need to rent skis...do it on the mountain. If you need ski gear...buy it online or any other sporting goods store. read more

My advice to potential Ski World shoppers is BEWARE. This family-owned store in Virginia Beach subscribes to the antiquated policy of no refunds or credit on returned items AND they do not inform you of that upon purchase. Their world offers you, the consumer, no ability to change your mind or find that the item is no longer appropriate for your needs without repurchasing at their store. Their policy of store credit or exchange only works if they have alternative items for you. This is where a large part of the problem occurs for the customer as their inventory is minimal and localized to this warmer climate. Today I was caught at Ski World. In the rush to shop before Christmas I purchased long underwear that I later realized would not be warm enough for the conditions at our vacation destination. I returned the items only to be reminded of their policy of store credit or exchange by their sales clerk. I was upset because I had already purchased other items from there, as I have done for the past twelve years, and needed nothing else. So to be reminded that they now got to keep my $160 was mildly annoying. The manager on duty today had no ability to diffuse my annoyance; he actually escalated the situation and demeaned the fact that spending $600 at Ski World is purely an average amount of money. This manager asked me to leave the store because I dared to question and argue this store's policy. Bottom line... Customer service at Ski World is non-existent. This is proven by their policy of no refunds or credit and their aggressive nature in defending that policy. My advice to everyone is either to shop on-line, head to Peter Glenn at Richmond, or go to Dick's. At least your money will be returned to you at these better shopping locations. read more
