The snow is fun but I'm not going in that slushy mud Dad.

Skidaway Island State Park. A very nice state park just southeast of Savannah, Georgia. We were there for 4 nights recently when Savannah had snow. It was quite a different camping experience for us north Floridians. Side note, we learned that our Grand Design 22mle has a good heater. This park has some great trails but our exploring them by foot and bike was limited due to the icy and muddy conditions as the snow melted. We plan to return in better weather to fully explore all of the trails. The park office/camp store is the nicest I have seen. It even has a mini-nature museum with a giant sloth skeleton and several snakes displayed in terrariums. Kids will enjoy this area. There are 4 campgrounds. Each has a bathhouse. We were in site 2, a pull through site in area 1. Gravel sites mostly appear to be pretty level. The bathhouses in our area 1 is the closest to the park office and seemed to be a bit older than the others in different areas. The other bathhouses looked newer and definitely had better heat. These newer ones were set up in the typical locker room type set up of toilets and showers. However, the older one in area 1 had 6 individual bathrooms, 4 of those included showers, as well as a laundry room. The camp hosts did a good job keeping the bathhouses clean considering everybody's snowy/muddy shoes and boots. Several of the sites in area 1 were also equipped with full hook ups. I do not think any of the other 3 camp areas had any sites with full hook ups. A nice touch in this park were the several dog poo bag dispenser stations and disposal containers along the roadways near the bathhouses. The playgrounds and picnic shelters looked well equipped and nice as did the exercise area, but due to the snow they were not being used. If you camp here you can expect to see many deer, raccoons and a variety of birds as we did. You will also see and hear military jets from time to time from the base in Savannah. There is a University of Georgia oceanography facility/campus nearby that has an aquarium open to the public but it was closed due to the snow event. Savannah is about a 20 min. drive but we stayed east of town and found grocery stores and restaurants we liked between Skidaway and Savannah. We enjoyed Sand Fly BBQ in Sand Fly and Desposito's for seafood out toward Wilmington Island. We look forward to revisiting Skidaway State Park.

The islands around Savannah don't have a ton of ocean access, but this state park offers something different. A small entry fee (per car, not per person) leads to a set of trails that include a tour of the coastal landscape, including a shell midden which the path seems to haphazardly run through, pieces of a Prohibition-era still, and a walkway out into the marsh for a viewing platform. The sounds and smells are as big a part of the experience as the sights, and while I passed a ranger-led tour group and several other parties, even on a busy day there was plenty of time to listen to the wind move through the trees. I didn't see a ton of wildlife and I was in a bit of a hurry, but there was certainly enough interesting terrain here to be worth a look.

Had a very nice time visiting SI State Park. We visited on a Friday morning for some hiking on a beautiful September day. We were warned about the mosquitos but did not have a problem. I can imagine in the summer months it can be quite humid and hot. We walked about 3.5 miles of the various trails. They were well marked and mostly in the shade from the trees. Very easy hike with no elevation. The only thing you had to watch was the tree roots throughout the paths. We visited the welcome center which looks rather new. Staff were very nice and helpful. Definitely worth the $5 entrance fee.

There is a five dollar entrance fee but the park is very big and seems to have a lot to explore within it. Would be a nice place to camp as well. The trails are not difficult if compared to the Appalachian and has plenty of benches to rest at.

$5/car. We enjoyed the Sandpiper, Avian, and Big Ferry loop on a warm November day. Beautiful views.

The biodiversity here is amazing, and I love that I can bring my doggo along. We came on a Saturday, and paid $5 for a day pass. There was some construction going on at the visitor's center, but we didn't need it. There is plenty of parking, and there are areas for picnics and camping. (When I get brave enough I would love to camp over night!) There are three trails that all intersect with each other. One of them is a little longer than the others (I think 3mi?) but I got a little scared since it looked like we're were walking into dense nature and I'm still getting my Boston feet used to all the nature that's down here, LOL. This is a great place for a morning adventure before it gets too hot or too busy, and again, it's dog friendly so that helps too.

We placed to home but we couldn't find the trail on the western side, the Sandpiper. So we walked towards the campgrounds and eventually found the Eastern side of the trail. We were going to connect west back over to where the car was, but then came another obstacle. A "This is Closed" sign appeared in a fork in the road. It wasn't like a piece of paper had been slapped on just because of the virus, this was a weathered wooden sign planted in the earth, and looked like it had been there for a couple of years. So we turned around and finished the walk, about 3 miles total.  Oh but let me throw this in there too. The trail map said that there was an observation deck on the Eastern side of the trail, so I figured that would be a good spot to take some pictures. We got there and it was a 3 level tower, except there was no way to get to the 3rd level; you could only go to the 2nd level. But they had a garbage can right under a tiny hole that led to the 3rd deck so I guess somebody would have needed to give me a boost step in order to get on the top deck. Absolutely ridiculous.

Great state park, nice tree canopy and most all sites are shaded nicely, spacious camp sites with good amount of room between them. Clean facilities and perfect for bike riding. Short drive into savannah for site seeing. Early morning and evening wild deer. Highly recommend.

I love camping here. We stay for a weekend every year and it's always so clean and nice. It's generally pretty quiet and the employees are super friendly. Nice clean bathrooms and showers. It's close enough to downtown Savannah for tourist adventures but far enough away to have a quiet night by the fire.

I visit this well maintained state park a few times a year. It is the best example of the natural beauty and resources of Savannah. Well worth the parking fee (free if you choose to walk in). It is good for all ages as there is a nature center and playground (both currently under renovation), which are great for kids. My friend's children petted an alligator with a ranger's assistance of course (pre-covid). Numerous shelters and picnic tables are available. Now for the best part, the hiking. I usually start at the Sandpiper Trail by the nature center. The trails are connected with each other in a series of loops. I recommend setting aside two hours for your visit and more if you plan to picnic. The trails near the nature center are about a mile each with boardwalks and sand trails right by the water's edge at times. Little shade so in the summer it can be intense. I usually walk all the loops but you can park further in the park to access the Ferry Loop, which gives you a 360 view of the wetlands and has an observation tower. Not too high but the area is mostly flat so you have an unobstructed view. This park is practically a bird refuge. There is a strong chance that you will find egrets and blue herons. The next series of loops- has a larger variety of fauna due to the higher calcium deposits and some remains of a moonshine distillery. If you are a biker, this section allows access. The trails have benches along the way to rest and enjoy the water views. Not the full stars because of human progress. The Truman Highway, great for commuting but is a view distraction in the distant background. Some tips: If you choose to extend your hike, there is an oceanographic center down the road with a small trail. If it rained during the week the trails near the center can become muddy. Goes without saying but sunscreen and water in the summer are strongly recommended if you plan to hike all the sections.

Yesterday was a walk in the park. Literally. We walked two easy trails; Flat. Hot. No bikes allowed. 3 miles total approximately. Tidal coastal marshes. Some wildlife. Some history. Confederate army hid out here n there. Good old boys built a whiskey still here. Etc. Etc.. Got well needed exercise, not done a lot in the week road trip so far. Took some pics. Pity the interactive center is closed on a Monday. Paid 5 bucks to park the car. This big state park has campgrounds, picnic tables etc. It was very quiet yesterday. We recommend Skidaway Island state Park when y'all wish to slow down and escape the tourist scene for a few hours. Pics to come.

Spanish Moss and palm trees ... what a backdrop for this incredible state park.

The DeVaul Henderson Lake Loop (DHLL) seemed to be the best bet due to length of the trail. When you are on Hwy 144 and you get to the roundabout, turn in on Veterans Memorial Parkway, where the Bryan County Administrative Complex is. The trail is located right next to it. You can't miss it. Parking - You can pretty much park anywhere on the grass along Veterans Memorial Parkway. I like to park toward the other end, by the elementary school, where you see the 4 wooden posts. Trail Description - From the 4 wooden posts, down to the paved path, the ground is dirt and a mix of sand and pine needles, and not paved, but that distance is minimal. It is surround by tall trees. Once you get down to the paved part, the signs indicate that it's a 0.5 mile loop. This loop has 3 different connection points to other parts of DeVaul Henderson Recreation Park (to soccer fields and restrooms) and I believe to the side of the Bryan County Administrative Complex. The connection points are located on the opposite side of Veterans Memorial Parkway. There are park benches all around the lake, as well as flotation devices in case someone gets in and needs some saving. There was a unique bench (kind of like one of those stone benches you see in gardens) and it had a sign "The Murphy Bench" that was placed there in memory of an infant boy. How tragic, but so touching. Difficulty Level - Easy for all ages. It is stroller and wheelchair friendly too, but might experience some bumpiness when going down that first small stretch to the paved path. Beware - There are signs that say "Beware of Wildlife". I am assuming they mean alligators, because that is what they always seem to warn you about around these parts, but we did not personally see any. But do we ever really see them when they are around? Unless they decide to come out of the water. However, we did see a lot of ducks swimming in the lake, as well as a beautiful white one just sitting on the side in the grass. This is a great place to run, walk, speed walk, scoot (my Little One took her scooter) and I saw some people fishing too. It's a great pit stop if you happen to be in the area. You can fill up on gas at the Shell Station and stretch those legs before you go on the next leg of your trip. Get outside, People!

That said, I'd be lying if I said it totally lived up to the hype. It felt a little underwhelming overall, especially considering how long the walk is. Bring water -- seriously. If I did it again (and I absolutely will not), I'd probably rent bikes instead of walking the whole thing. I actually love history, so I was expecting to be more engaged by the historical side of it, but it just didn't really do it for me. I almost feel bad about it. In all fairness - half the site was closed so maybe I just got unlucky that day. The crowd also killed the vibe. It was the worst kind of tourist energy.

Trail Description - Once I parked the car, we walked to the fork where I could see the barrier and hiking sign (I saw it on the drive in). We started there and kept to the left. It started out as a pretty well marked path, under the trees. Once you get out of the shaded part, it's just grassy. It will bring you around the lake, and it's wide open, so there is no way you would get lost. We opted to take a shortcut and cut through on the bridge. There was a man there fishing. He said some days the fish bite like crazy and other says, nothing, so just a tip to anyone who likes to go fishing. There are picnic tables and a covered picnic area in the middle by the bridge that are great spots for meal and snack breaks. There were beautiful flowers along the way and also a patch of what I think are called Cypress Trees at one end of the lake. They are pretty much dead, but I thought they were pretty to look at the cluster of them. The reflection of the trees on the sunny day was just perfect. My Fitbit clocked the portion we did as about 1 mile. Kid-Friendly - Absolutely! Very flat trail, however not paved. Unless you have a B.O.B or a jogging stroller with bike-like tires, I would just use a baby carrier. Thankful that Chatham County is very nature focused and is committed to providing green space in the area for its residents. There seemed to be another trail by the park sign, so we will have to come back to explore that portion!
