I've been going to Skullz for sometime and Jeremy never fails to deliver great service and excellent styling. In addition, Jeremy presents a great attitude, he's friendly and a good conversationalist. It's not like I'm getting my hair trimmed but meeting up with an old friend. In addition, Jeremy is punctual and responsive to your hair needs. I brought in a picture once and he had no trouble providing me with a very similar look. I've been getting my hair done here for around 8 months, and here are my thoughts: Pros 1. They do a great job. My hair looks fantastic, and every stylist is trained the same way. My husband, who also gets his hair done here, has never had better looking hair. 2. My stylist, Emily is personable and really fun to talk to, which is huge because I'm usually in the salon for at least three hours. 3. The Kent and Akron locations are both beautiful. It feels like a high end salon. Cons: 1. The senior stylists, in my opinion seem..rather full of themselves. I understand the importance of taking pride in your work, but a little humility could go a long way there. 2. They push product. Like a lot. With no real acknowledgement that it's expensive. If I've just paid $200+ dollars to get my hair done, it's not always realistic for me to drop $50+ on products. Perhaps less pushing at the POS and a friendly email a few weeks later reminding you of the products recommended would work better. That being said, I use the products and they do work well, I just purchase them at a different time. read more

I had to go to the emergency room the day of my appointment for kidney transplant issues. When I called to cancel my appointment I was treated very poorly and spoken to as if I was dirt. I was told "every excuse is emergent" and they tried to charge me $58. I am on disability and cannot afford this for a service I did not receive. After making a fb status about this mistreatment m, the owner texted me very rude things. Basically told me that if I had health problems I wasn't a good fit to be a client. I should not have scheduled an appt if I knew I could have a random emergency... so basically no one should go here because emergent things happen to everybody. After other people saw what had happened they called the salon and made reviews. I then had the cops called on me because of people disagreeing with how I was treated. I dealt with this from a hospital bed. Very disgusted. read more

My first time going here. Jeremy did not do what I asked at all. All I wanted was to trim the dead ends, and I left with much shorter hair with none of the layers that I came in with and he cut framing for my bangs without asking. I paid $70 for him to not wash or style my hair. I don't know if this is how the rest of the stylists work, but I will never go there again. read more

I'm so impressed with this salon! I had been wanting to start going but kept putting it off. I recently had one of the worst haircuts of my life at another salon and decided it was time. I'm never going anywhere else! Amazing salon! Have gone here since they first opened in Kent, and I would not go anywhere else! I have extremely thick hair, and their specialty razor cuts in combination with personal shampoo/styling product consultations have transformed my hair into something I can manage and easily style! Never any obvious choppy layers, and my hair always feels SO much lighter when I leave! At first, I thought the products were too expensive. Then I tried them... and WOW! What you don't realize is how much longer the product lasts because you don't need to use as much, or use it as frequently! For me it averaged about $5/month for a much better product with infinitely better results. Haven't gone back to any other products since! All stylists are highly trained from an apprenticeship level, and they even have ongoing training classes for all existing stylists, too! No matter what your hair type is, they have mastered how to cut and style it. Make an appointment with literally any of their staff - you cannot go wrong! read more

Not a fan of this place. Really overpriced and with the exception of one or two stylists, there's a lot of pretentiousness in the salon. I used to go because it was the only "nicer" salon in town. I've gone for cuts that weren't bad, but very "meh" for the price. The nail in the coffin for me was after a consultation and thoroughly inspecting my thick, waist-long, virgin hair, I was given a quote for a full highlight and ombré. After my stylist was done, not only did it look NOTHING like the photo (I looked like a cheap stripper with my orange tiger highlights), but was charged over $50 more than originally quoted. The receptionist said it was due to my hair's length and shrugged it off. This was after an in person consultation!!! Also, the salon is so dark inside that I didn't see how bad the job was until I stepped into natural light. I'd never recommend this place to ANYONE! read more

I've been wanting to try Skullz Salon out for months now, but I never got around to it. Also, despite how picky I am about my hair, I wasn't sure I wanted to drop $40 on a cut when I can get one for $15 elsewhere. But you know how the saying goes: you get what you pay for. I fell in love as soon as I walked in the front door. I wish I had a salon like this back in college. I've always loved having edgier hairstyles. My older sister is a hair stylist and I could always rely on her to do awesome things with my hair, but when I moved away from my hometown I had a really difficult time finding someone else I could trust. Time after time I left salons with a mediocre, run-of-the-mill haircut. The first time I splurged on a haircut, I was in Italy. When I saw the results of what a true stylist could do, I knew I couldn't go back. 2 months after my trip to Italy, I was desperate for a trim. That's what finally brought me to Skullz. The salon itself is very punk rock. The decor is dominated by black and bright pink. It is the most comfortable salon I have ever been in. The front room is very loungey with comfy couches, magazines and books, and a TV playing old school movies. Haircuts are done in the back room, which is completely decorated with graffiti on the walls. Teh chairs are probably the nicest salon chairs I've ever sat in. Instead of the typical setup of a mirror over a counter, you're faced with a full-length mirror propped up on the wall in front of you. The room is HUGE so you don't feel like you're sitting on top of the other customers. There's also a couch back here for guests to lounge on and watch while their friends get awesome do's. The staff are super friendly and down to earth. To some, they might look intimidating (i.e. my mom wouldn't come here) but I just found myself envious of their style (I'm a punk rocker in the body of a working adult). Also, I've come to judge the ability and style of a stylist by their own haircut. Every single stylist had a crazy hairstyle that I loved and wanted for myself. One thing that's really unusual about Skullz is that they do dry-hair cuts. Most salons completely soak your hair before cutting it. At Skullz, they ask that you come with clean hair so they can cut it dry. If you need it washed, they blow dry it before they cut it. According to the stylists, this is because cutting dry hair gives them a better feel of an individual's hair type. The better they know the hair, the better they can style it. Makes sense. My gripe is with my stylist, whose name I can't remember. I wasn't terribly impressed with my haircut, especially given the large sum of money I dished out for it. I got a cancellation fee of $ 92 from this shop. I canceled after 24 hours, so I didn't follow the cancellation policy, but from the last two days, heavy snow fell and the road was blocked and I couldn't go to the shop, so I had to cancel. However, despite this situation, I was not heard. I am a repeater and have never canceled. I was told that I wouldn't accept it for any reason, but is there such a stupid story? I will never go to this shop again. And please be careful, too, if you do not cancel within 24 hours, you will be charged a cancellation fee for any unavoidable reason. read more

After spending $200.00 to have my hair cut, dyed & styled at another salon; I decided to try Skullz Salon & was very disappointed. I love the decor & the atmosphere- they offer free martini's on Fridays! but I was really unhappy with my stylists. She was...well, fake nice. You know the type of person who puts a smile on their face but still acts like you're the worlds biggest inconvenience to them. I asked for my hair to be dyed one color underneath & another darker color on top; then cut. My stylists said "No, where not going to do that today" and picked out a color I wasn't really happy with. When I expressed what I was looking for and choose another color she completely ignored me. I was also really unhappy with the way she cut my hair and didn't feel comfortable with her at all. I paid good money, over $70.00 (plus $20.00 tip) and expected a little more from her. I was so unhappy that I called & asked if I could come back in the next day & have it fixed. The owner herself was very nice & apologized. She made sure I was taken care of right away but gave me the same stylists :( Again, she ignored me when I said I'd like a second color underneath & just did a really quick & sloppy trim. As a transgender woman, finding the right salon can be a challenge. You have to find somewhere where the stylists both respect you as a woman and are willing to help you find the look that brings out the look you always wanted to live. Skullz excelled at both and I highly recommend them to any trans person. The salon can be a vulnerable place for trans women. We worry about our least passible features being exposed to the stylist and whether we should out ourselves to them. My own anxiety about this kept me out of the chair for about 2 years. So I finally decided my ends were too split and I needed a new look bad enough to go to the salon. I'm glad I choose Skullz. Everyone there was validating. I did have to out myself because my deadname is still on my debit card, but the receptionist was understanding and assured me that confusion wouldn't come up again. read more

I'd been seeing Jeremy, one of Skullz' stylists, when he worked down the road. My hair was growing out after a particularly bad cut (OK, so I shaved my head), and I really needed a new, cute style to make me feel pretty again. I read about Jeremy in the Daily Kent Stater and went to him blind, without any recommendations except the Stater review. I told him my story & begged him to fix me --- and fix me he did. I gave Jeremy total free reign over my hair and he gave me one of the cutest styles I've ever had. It was a little extreme, don't get me wrong -- reddish and dark black, a little spiky in the back with blunt bangs in front -- but it was exactly what I needed to get my self-esteem back in place following my brutal shaving experience and the Spock-like look it'd grown into. I have since moved all over the damn place & still always wait until I'm back home to get my hair done because I've yet to find anyone else who matches up. Jeremy can do everything, seriously. He can give you a spiky rainbow-colored punk look or he can give you a gorgeous updo. He does the hair of conservative little old ladies and girls who you'd never take home to mom. He's just plain talented, no matter what you're looking for. I've been to a few of Skullz other stylists', too, including owner Angelique; I've never gotten a bad cut or color from anyone there, though Jeremy is always my favorite. He was super friendly and totally understood what I wanted. I just went back today for my hair bleached and toned and was even more pleased! I've had my hair cut here by about 3 different stylists. They all did a quality job. I can tell that the manager doesn't let anyone work here that she doesn't think is good at what they do, and rightly so. I have had some really great hair cuts here, and some recent bad ones made me realize just how good. Though the cuts aren't perfect, if you take the time to point out what you don't like, they'll fix it for you, and it is always something minor and easily fixable. Can't go wrong here, in my opinion, and the prices for men's cuts aren't bad for the quality of cut that you're getting. read more

I couldn't be happier with Skullz Salon -- maybe that is why I drive over 2 hours for a fairly routine hair cut. I hate to say this, but I have gone elsewhere in an attempt to find something closer to Columbus, Ohio (where I currently live), but nothing compares. The atmosphere -- super original, punk rock-ish -- not my typical joint and the first time I went, I was a little intimidated. Turns out, I had no reason to be because they are phenomenal. They listen to you, give you advice and then cut your hair. Incredibly personable and very funny. The staff -- I enjoy their staff - and have had my hair done by Angelique, Hayley and Lindsey. They are all trained well and will fix up any mistakes that you feel like you made -- which is why I don't understand the reviews talking negatively about Skullz. Simply call and they will make an effort to accommodate you. I think what I enjoy most about their staff is that they TEACH you how to style your hair. They don't just do something and expect that you will be able to go home and style it like the professional. Anyway, I'm always pleased. I have zero complaints. They are well-educated (and if you follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, you'll see all their constant improvements to the staff, facility, etc). The location is the only difficult part...just not thrilled with any of DT Kent parking and that's not their fault. If you are new user, just leave a little early... Also, remember a cash tip. It only get cut...I'm not too much on color though I am sure Skullz is great with it and see and hear of lots of awesome reviews (my friend Katie gets her hair dyed lighter in the spring/summer and darker in the winter - always looks stunning) and I am never disappointed. In short? Skullz is easily the best salon in the Kent area. Here's why... A) All of their stylists have either been at their craft for 10+ years or have been exclusively trained by Angelique (the owner) through a 12+ month internship. You will not get a stylist that doesn't know what they are doing. B) Everyone who works there is very down to earth and is incredibly easy to talk to. I've had the issue with different salons in the area where their stylists and/or receptionists are incredibly rude. This is not the case with Skullz. C) Can they give you a purple Mohawk or rainbow dreadlocks? Sure. Is that their only specialty? No way. I consider myself a straight laced, clean cut preppy blond gal and they send me on my way looking the part. Don't be intimidated by the punk rock exterior, they understand and can create all kinds of different styles for men and women. Whenever I go, I always make sure to express exactly what I want for my hair and converse with the stylist before the appointment. Skullz is committed to making their clients happy more than any salon I've ever seen. The day I leave Kent will be a sad one because the search for a salon with these qualities will be extremely hard to find. read more

I will never recommend this salon. I called this salon the day before my 17 yo son's appointment to let them know that he was coming in and might need some help figuring out his haircut. I sent him there since they had younger stylists and being in a college town, I figured they were used to working with younger clients and could help him understand what he was looking for. He called me about 25 minutes later from the car, upset about his haircut. He then facetimed me so that I could see it and I could see what he meant- they had cut the top and sides shorter than he wanted but left the bottom longer, almost looked like a mullet. I told him was just going to have to take it shorter than he originally wanted. He felt bad to complain and questioned if he should just go to great clips or somewhere and have them fix it. So I of course advised him "no!", that he need to walk right back in and have them fix it. I mean, that was what he was there for- to get a haircut he liked!! I even suggested maybe taking in a picture so that they could get an idea. Since his hair was now shorter, he had to find a picture of a shorter cut- so he took in his friend's picture to help give an idea. He was told they would have to charge for another haircut- this literally 10 minutes after he had just walked out!! So I got on the phone and explained that he just needed it fixed. I talked to Amanda, who understood that I was NOT willing to pay for another haircut- but wanted his haircut to be fixed! Ok- everything seemed fine! Nope, my son calls me after the haircut and says its better- but he thinks they charged him for another cut. Are you kidding me!!? Obviously this salon cares NOTHING for customer satisfaction and just wanted to take advantage of a kid! That is a thing that has me the most angry. I have never in my life , with any hairdresser , ever had this happen. I plan to pursue as many avenues that I can to complain . They need to refund me for one haircut, and if they were an actual quality place, they would refund everything for the aggravation this has caused. How do you treat customers this way? I only spoke to Amanda, but she has an absolutely horrible attitude towards customer service. Any other salon or stylist would have offered to fix the problem - not charge AGAIN for it!! The funny thing is, my sister goes here when she is in town and needs a color and cut. I can't wait to tell her about this one. Could have been handled so easily, all they had to do was fix it and Life Would Have gone on just peachy . I'm still in shock as to how they handled the simplest thing, at the end of a haircut if your customer is not satisfied, you fix it! All they had to do was just cut the hair that was too long in the back and blend it in and for that they charged another full haircut- when it should all have been considered just the same haircut! I'm not fashionable I admit that, Savanah was very upfront and honest with me about what she would do and I took that advice. What I received was the best haircut I've ever had and a renewed self confidence that I honestly didn't know I was missing till Savanah hooked me up. I love brutal honesty and she was that and more. WORST ever! My wife went in there with LONG BLONDE HAIR. She wanted it colored bright red, and a little shorter. She came out with pink hair, with the color uneven thourghout. Also, the back was so short, that it barely came to the nape of her neck. And the sides were so long, when you look at her from the back, it looked like she had pig tails on the sides.... It took a second stylist to even straighten out the sad work the first stylist did. This after she told the stylist SEVERAL times she wanted it straight across on the back. This cut is so bad, its literally going to cost me over a thousand dollars to fix teh colors and get extentions to fix their mistake. And the owner, pathetic, she didnt even wanna talk to me on the phone when the manager called her at home, I had to ask to speak to her 5 times. When she finally did, she told me that WE DIDNT KNOW WHAT A GOOD CUT IS, because were not stylists. What I am is a man, with eyes, and can see a horrible color and cut when its in front of me... Sheeesh.. What was supposed to be a great fun day for my wife, turned out to be days of crying. Dont walk away from this salon... RUN AWAY FROM IT. I will most likely have to take legal action to recoup their arrogant mistakes. read more

I like the haircut I get here. Liz always does what I want. And it's a great cut. The issue I have is that I pay top price for the cut of my very short hair as I see by the menu. The website says you get a complimentary shampoo with every cut. This has not been the case. As a matter of fact I've never had a shampoo. I feel like since I'm paying the highest price as per your menu. I should be getting the full relaxing experience. There is no way to tell anyone how I feel about this without everyone knowing who I am and I'm just not that confrontational nor do I want Liz to take it out on my hair cut. I'm hoping they will read this review and all the stylist will be reminded that the owners website is what says this service should be provided. I don't want to leave but feel it's not what you advertise I should be getting for my money. Should I look around for another salon. My entire life I thought I had ugly hair that nothing could be done with. My hair is wavy, frizzy, and generally unmanageable. I had tried dozens of Salons growing up ranging from Best Cuts to Mario's International and I always got the same bad results no matter what. ...Then I met Angelique. I heard about their salon word of mouth when I was working at Starbucks in Kent Ohio where Angelique and Jeremy could often be found getting the caffeine fix. I tried it on a whim and I have never let anyone else cut my hair since. Angelique uses the right razor technique that properly thins my hair adding manageability and style. I don't even bother trying to give her any instructions. I just let her know about how long I want it and tell her to make it look good- and like magic she does. I live in Maryland right outside of Washington D.C. and I haven't found anything comparable! There is nothing in the posh neighborhoods of Georgetown, DuPont, Bethesda or Potomac that compares to this salon situated in Kent, Ohio. I always hit up the salon on visits home to my parents- this is simply the best thing going in Kent! read more

I am giving this salon two stars out of five because it's nicely decorated. Other than the decoration, the salon is not as great as they make it seem. All their services are just WAY over priced. The receptionist is rude if you miss an appointment and the staff is unprofessional. My friend got a haircut there and her hair was uneven and choppy. I've been going to Skullz for a couple years now and my stylists is easily one of the best I've ever gone to. Every time I leave my hair is in awesome shape and has been thinned out the right amount (I have super thick hair). It never grows back weirdly (like it has after visits to inferior salons). Also, no one ever pushes product on you; they tell you about what they put in your hair and make recommendations based on your hair type, but you never feel pressure to buy it (like in other salons). I've bought more products at this salon than any other because they work so well. I've never regretted buying any product or getting any hair cut here! The vibe of the place is awesome as well; it's a great layout and there's none of that usual overpowering hair salon chemical smell that you find in other places. read more

My boyfriend and I were browsing a local antique shop when I caught a glimpse of myself in one of the antique mirrors. After two surgeries within the last year, my hair had become brittle and unhealthy. It was in desperate need of a "freshening up" of sorts. I walked into this salon which was next door. They gladly sat me with a stylist who trimmed up my hair and did an awesome job. I went back 6 weeks later for a cut and color with a different stylist who also did an awesome job. I love my new hair and get complimented on it often. My hair is now healthy and growing quickly. The products that they recommended are helping to keep the nice color. The only thing to add would be that you can't leave a tip on a credit card, so bring cash! And on Friday they serve up margaritas while you have your service done! read more

So I just moved into the Portage county area this past July, and really didn't want to drive 45 minutes into Cleveland for a haircut. Even though I truly love my current stylist. After a quick search of my new town this place popped up underneath the Supercuts web site. The name alone had very excited to try this place out. I was feeling very cautions consider I've seen the same person for 9yrs straight. It's very easy to find " However you do need coins for the parking meter" . This place is aesthetically pleasing. The décor is beautiful done and represents the name of the Salon very well. I had the pleasures of having Liz as my stylist. She listen to my concerns and offered sage advice how to maintain my hair, and how I can address my issues concerning using various products. She carefully explain how to use each product and why I should use them. And even gave me a list of the products she'd use in my hair. If your on the fence don't be anymore. I would definitely recommend this to my friends and family members. read more
