My husband thought it would be hilarious to buy a little rubber toy rat for our son. It's consequently freaked out every person that has come to visit us. It's now mysteriously absent -- makes me think the babysitter threw it out. Regardless! Support given. We were meeting some friends nearby at *Tom's Kitchen for brunch (recommended!) and decided to use the Canary Wharf excursion to check out Museum of London Docklands, where a soft play area was rumored to be housed. And indeed -- a very nice little area for the little ones can be found here. There's a pretty large, enclosed area containing: water/sand play (probably best for 2+), HUGE building blocks section, fun little toys about shipping and transport (they manage to make them fun and durable), and of course, a soft play centre with requisite slide, nets, climbing and big soft squishy shapes. Bookings for these sessions can be made in advance -- though I couldn't figure out how, so we just turned up on a Sunday and lucked out that there was space. IF it is a busy time of year (half term, etc) I do suggest calling ahead to book. It runs in sessions so once the end of the session comes, everyone is out and a new batch is let in. This worked well for us as we spent about 40 minutes inside...but our timing was purely luck. Next time we'll book and know when it starts/ends. We took the opportunity to view the museum -- also very child and pram friendly. It's very nicely curated, interesting and most importantly with a child -- relatively fast. You can go through the entire Museum in about 20 minutes, should you need to. Situated right on the Docklands (obviously) this is a great kid-friendly stop if you are out seeing the sights or visiting the area.

The building itself was incredible. The actors that came out during our tour were also very funny and engaging. Words cannot describe except you need to see it for yourself and it's a once in a lifetime experience.

If I'd known about that in advance I would have never come as I never developed skills to ice skate having lived all my life in California. Normally I would not pay money to see a museums in London as all the big government funded museums for the public are free of charge for entry. However we were walking down the embankment area next to the Thames and came across free public bathrooms something unheard of in Europe. The bathrooms were connected to a restaurant which was part of the somerset house. Wife and I feeling relieved gladly paid the money for the entry fee. Several buildings with paintings and photographs from around the world both of people and of animals in their natural setting. Looked like a series of pictures from covers of national geographic magazines. Ended up paying 30 GBP or $39 for two entries, an expensive public bathroom visit.

Marvelous place, the Tate Modern, though unfortunately my children did not see the appeal…read more I had fond memories of our first visit, back in 2010, and wanted to peek into the Tate during a family outing along South Bank last month. I love London's free museums, which make this sort of perfunctory drop-in both easy and practical. Our kids didn't like the Musée d'Orsay, so we didn't have high hopes for the Tate, especially after a long walk from the London Eye. We'd barely gotten them up the escalators and into one of the exhibit halls when they started saying they wanted to leave. We admired what we could of the heavy-hitting collection. We also talked to our children about some of the art, and maybe a trickle of it got through. There was a still life I loved, that turned out to be a Picasso, and a Mondrian painting I'm pretty sure I learned about in first or second grade. Our six-year-old volunteered that he liked a still life of a beer mug by Fernand Léger, and both kids were drawn, just a little, to Warhol's Marilyn Diptych. I hope the boys remember this quick visit, but if not, I certainly will. Maybe I'll bring them back when they're older, and we can give the Tate the time it deserves.

Once you study the layout you discover all of the galleries that are free which are quite a few. If you like contemporary art this is the place to go since they have a good collection. There is some really weird stuff. Of course the building itself and its rebirth from a power station is worth a visit alone. Fascinating.

This is definitely a museum for serious Egyptophiles. Hit the British Museum first; if you're not…read morea serious enthusiast you'll have come a long way and won't be impressed. Part of the appeal here is the history; writer Amelia Edwards' collection forms the basis of the museum, and it's named for Flinders Petrie, who, among other things, did the first excavation at Amarna, the city founded by monotheist king Akhnetan. It's kind of a jumble; if you're looking for something in particular you may have to ask where it is. The fliers in the foyer that are supposed to indicate what's where are being revised and are of limited utility. Also, many of the exhibits are labeled in the original ink, which has faded over the last 100 years. Lighting is poor which probably protects the artifacts, but makes them hard to see. Wikipedia says they have flashlights; you might consider bringing one. And in the exhibit of stone carvings, some items were far enough above my head I couldn't see them at all. (Some very fine carvings here; look for the piece of the pyramid texts, with remnants of green paint in the hieroglyphs.) Artifacts from both Deir el Medinah (the workers' village in the Valley of the Kings) and Amarna are featured, including some nice small artist's studies. Do read the signage on the ends of the cases so you know what you're looking at. The Amarna items are certainly worth a look (The tiles from Amarna are lovely, though small.) This museum also has a complete fishnet bead dress and two perfectly preserved linen sleeves, as well as a couple of partial shirts. This is fairly rare. There's also a pair of shoes and several sandals. The museum has one of the largest collections of Roman period mummy portraits (keep in mind that's maybe half a dozen). The museum boasts several "firsts" but good luck finding them; they're not really highlighted in any way. I mostly breezed past the pottery, but I did appreciate all the strings of beads; in the pottery room they have some reproduction necklaces and costumes for the kids to try on (I did too when no one was looking). Do check out the emergency staircase behind the "There's More!" sign - this includes a nice exhibit of funerary boat models. And yes, they have a couple of mummy cases and a "pot" burial (what it sounds like - a skeleton that was buried in a really large clay pot). Small gift shop (well, gift table) that sells books. Cash only.

Tate Britain is a museum with the collection of some great Art work. I most enjoyed the display of…read moreart works of JMW Turner. The collection being called as "JMW Turner: Rise to Fame" is a beautiful collection of different art works created over several years by the artist. The works are displayed in a certain order. Admired closely along with the notes on display, almost feels like a story being told. Post the viewing of the entire collection, we stopped by to watch the 30 mins documentary being played on the artist and his works, it feels so good and achieved coz the documentary is such a great depiction and familiarisation of those paintings, the rationale of the order of their display and the history associated. The viewing felt like I was revising my already learnt syllabus :-). After finishing the documentary, then went back to see a couple of works again as some of those had been magnified and shown to such detail in the documentary that I got even more curious to have a second look! We took so much time to watch this collection, rather admire it, that rest of the collections din seem to impress us comparatively as much and hence we spent just a couple of hours to view the rest of the series. ** we love viewing art at all the museums that we come across, be it in other locations in the UK such as the beautiful assimilation in the museums in Scotland, in Italy particularly Florence and in Rome, in Austria, in Chicago and in London!! Art is never admired enough even if one as me is not much of a painter or a sculptor themselves :-b

A lovely museum for kids and adults alike. My favorite room was the war room that talked about how…read morethe underground trains were used as shelters and more. My kids favorites were the upstairs train toys, craft room and getting a real train ticket and the stamp scavenger hunt. Bathrooms and picnic lunch eating areas are all downstairs. Water bottle fill up station as well. We spent about two hours here and saw everything. The only downside was that one of the elevators was broken when we came so we had to walk a bit more to get the other one. This is also in a really nice part of town to walk around after!
