I made the mistake of not checking last check in, but they allowed me to check in past 8pm. The room was a bit cozy. I was by myself so it was fine for me. Otherwise it might be a bit tight. Breakfast is from 8:00-9:45. Since I arrived so late, Sam (or Simon) offered to hold the kitchen for 15 min longer so I could sleep in which was very generous. Breakfast was so good! I had the Lakeland breakfast two mornings which included an egg, baked beans, black pudding, sausage, bacon, tomato, and mushrooms. I hate beans so I didn't get beans. It did come with toast and there's plenty of butter, marmalade, and marmite for you to use. When I first sat down, someone immediately asks me if I want a pot of tea. They also have hot chocolate and decaf if you choose. This was the perfect location. 5 min away from the nearest bus stop and the town. There are lots of small shops and restaurants to try. One thing I didn't like is that there are not a lot of lights on around the town late at night, but that's not really the establishments fault more like the town.

Compston House American Style B&B
This was one of the most friendly little B&B's we've stayed at in the Lake District. The minute you…read morewalk through the door you are greated by Jerry and Sue who are more than happy to help you out with local information, restaurant recommendations and bookings etc. The B&B is perfectly located in the centre of Ambleside so it's easy to stroll to one of the many pubs or restaurants. The rooms are all themed on different parts of America and the rest of the B&B is imaculate. The breakfasts are one of the main attractions to this B&B and now I know why. You can choose between a full American, a full English or any mixed breakfast, pancakes, omlettes you name it. So much choice and so much food you'll struggle to leave the table and Jerry will keep offering you more. Sue does a cracking job in the kitchen and no matter how busy it is the breakfast is at the highest standard. The only thing that lets this place down is the bathroom in our room was very small but to be fair it did it's job so I wasn't too bothered. I would definatly recommend this place to anyone.

Park House Guest House
This is a really nice B&B confirmed by all the nice reviews on Trip Advisor…read more Stayed here for 3 nights. Room 2 has delightful views to the fells & local park but overlooks the main rd running past but isn't to noisy in my opinion. Very clean & breakfast was perfect. The proprietors Paul & Diane where perfect hosts. Couldn't fault it at all. Points to note. Parking is provided in a secure compound only accessed by a locked gate which you have a key, it's just across the park about 200 metres away. Very strict on taking the local chinky take away in but can't understand why you might want to do that as there are so many places to eat not more than a 5 min walk away. Its best booked direct for the best price & not on the internet as the booking company charges an extra 10%. Well deserved 5 stars. Would certainly recommend & would return.

The two bar meals areas were pretty full, so I ate outside. This is in July. I only had to wait four minutes for my order to arrive, beautifully cooked haddock in batter, proper chips and mushy peas with mint.(see the photo!) I thought that it was reasonable at £7.95 and one of half a dozen cooked lunches at that price. They also do a two course meal (for the over 60s) for £5.95. There are also a good range of lighter options for lunch. Puddings however were disappointing, they sounded great, but were £5.45. One of the things which I should have born in mind is that, because it is such a tourist hot spot, normal prices are generally suspended. As a result the main courses were cheap, but the puddings the usual!! I enjoyed my bitter and there was a good selection of real ales, and also wines. The Queen's Head also does bed and breakfast. It costs £45 per person per night at the moment, according to the village website.

This is thankfully an exception to the rule! Food is still excellent - difficult to think of where I've had better fish and chips - and the real ales on offer are delicious.
