Unfortunately while they do have great prices on the products that I come here for. There is always a long line to check out! I haven't been here once where I didn't spend at least 10 minutes waiting in the check out line. Usually they only have one lane open you'll be lucky if they open up the second! It's not pretty, but it gets the job done. Some prices seem awesome, while others not so much. Some of the stuff cracked me up...like a gigantic package of MSG for $18. It never seems to be very crowded so we may stop here over our local Safeway for the stuff we can't get at Trader Joe's. read more

Not the greatest selection of produce and meats... they carry Foster Farms chicken that is priced lower than any other grocery store. Good sales on juice, water,condiments, party supplies and booz..... anything else....eh. read more

This is a really great store. I went there looking for specific plastic cups with lids and ended up finding all sorts of great things. I'm now a regular. The store is super clean and very organized. The staff is friendly and they open more checkout lanes when customers start lining up. read more

um, I think not. I came here at 4pm on a Sunday. There were only 2 registers open and each line had about 6 people in it. I went to go grab some whole lactaid milk for my son, and they had none at all. This is the 3rd time they've been out of it. I think it will be a while before I set foot in this place again. :( read more

I live in Pleasanton, and I shop here from time to time when there are specials i'm interested in. Today I went in about 3:10p for the Orange Juice, Ground Turkey Meat and Coffee Creamer. As i was checking out with the Black Dude with Glasses, the Creamer was slightly higher than what it was advertised, he asked me,do I want it and i said no, then he went to around and scanned my basket, I asked him, what's up with that? Every time I go in there, he scans it, and he gives a smart ass answer. I paid for my items and went to check out the ad. It stated you have to by 4 Nestle products to get the discount on the creamer. I also asked the Mexican Dude, who might of been the manager, he stated you have to look for the blue tag products though the store. I didn't feel like taking the time to do that, so I left. As I was putting the basket away, the Mexican Dude came out and asked me if I paid for for those products, I said yes, then he asked me if I needed a bag, I said no. I felt am being harassed by the Black Dude. I know why they scan the basket, because people take them and he just assume because I am a African American Women, i'm going to take it. Also the Mexican accused me of stealing. I should not be subject to this behavior. In this day and time, African Americans are being treated with no respect all over this country. read more

Horrible produce! When I went, the peaches were 49 cents a pound, so of course I had to get some. When I bit into one at home, it was the worst peach I'd ever eaten! The greenish bananas I bought were brown and uneatable 2 days later. Yuck...that's all I have to say. Will not be shopping here. read more

The biggest problem here is like most places the CUSTOMERS the nicest people work here (excluding the new assistant manager tasha) yet every time i come in i see people make their own trip miserable by complaining and moaning about stuff a 20 year old kid getting paid minimum wage has no control over. I went to the to the Grand Opening from Smart & Final Extra and was extremely impressed at how organized it was. Yes there was a crowd and I normally avoid things like that but this place was impressive. Their prices are incredibly inexpensive, the clerks are kind. They definitely get my business. As a Chef, I usually like S&F for last minute catering/cooking supplies and equipment. However, this particular one is more like a degenerate grocery store. Very poor food quality that I would not buy. I still find it useful for paper/plastic goods needed for parties, chaffing dish fuel, pots, pans, and soft drinks/water in bulk. Service is not all the great, so I know I have to pad in extra time waiting in line. read more

I like this place. Yes, the lines get long very fast, but each time I've been there they opened up other ones quickly. The meats are priced good, but don't go there expecting to find any fresh seafood. This is a great place to shop for that upcoming family BBQ. If you want even cheaper prices and a more impressive selection, go to their Cash & Carry location on Oak St. in Oakland. It is worth the trip. read more

Cheap prices...did I say cheap prices? Their prices are very good and lower than most local grocery stores; small or big chain. This is my go-to location for most of my grocery needs. They have a huge selection of everything I am looking for when I go grocery shopping. The produce is always on-point, the store is always clean and the staff are very helpful. I only wish they could have more cashiers on hand because this store does get crowded and you can be in line for a very long, long, long time - this is the only reason I removed a star. So I'm here a lot for work picking up items...I do not personally shop at smart and final for myself unless I need a non food item for a lot of people...I am usually in and out, so my attention isn't on the people who work there as much as it is their products but today was pretty bad...Product was easy to find but the one thing I needed wasn't there...That's fine and dandy but when I asked if there was any more I got the best eye roll and "leave me alone I'm putting tags on shelves attitude" I have ever seen in my entire life...It was the best rude attitude I have seen at Smart and final yet...Which is saying a lot since their slogan for employees is "How can we manage to be more rude today then yesterday." Fremont is just as bad. And of course to my shock it was the Manager Joe (he seems to treat his cashiers the same way "Dont bother me im busy) that has the best eye roll attitude ever...I really hope that these guys and gals get a grip and start pushing a little more towards interactive communication with their customers...I'm at the point where I will go higher up if need be... read more

This is one of the best Value grocery stores in the area. It is a great place to get you basics and more. With the typical Big Grocer prices increasing I've found Smart and Final and Sprouts to be a great combo. Best things to purchase at Smart and Final. Fillet Bulk ($11 a pound), Milk, eggs romaine lettuce (6 heads 2.99), bulk cheese, chicken breasts (consistently around 2$ per pound), ribs (find on sale for 1.99 PP), ice cream (store in out second freezer. And the two best things: Bulk dish washing liquid and Kitchen Tools. Their spatulas and kitchen tools are as good as Sur La Table where the prices are like 5X the price. Overall this is a great store and I've noticed it getting much busier over the last year. read more

Smart and Final Extra! You know what makes it extra? The extra attitude and misery you get from going in here and having to deal with the employees. Not only do they block a lot of the aisles and the miserable employees stand in your way. When you say "Excuse me" they give you a very deliberate eye roll. When you tell them that they are over charging you they say "oh um" mumble something incoherent and then hand you a receipt without even trying to help you. Also, there is always a huge line and when you pay with a card all the machines are broken so you have to use your fingers to sign the broken pad. I noticed several expired items. A few of my items didn't scan so the women threw them next to her register so if something doesn't scan don't expect to be able to purchase it because the employees are the least helpful of any store I've ever been to. Not only do you need a lobotomy to work here you are also given meetings by management on how to be rude and despicable to customers. This is the third time in a row I have been here with the same result. I will not shop here again. read more

I have been to this store twice now and both times I had the same experience. Great store, great selection of items, great prices and friendly checkers BUT (sorry...here it comes) the baggers and the people stocking the shelves left much to be desired. I cant tell you how many times (both trips) that the stockers cut me off in the aisle like I wasnt even there. They made no effort to let me by until I asked to go by. One time I even turned and went the other way for the sake of not saying something snotty (I'd had enough). The first trip I couldnt believe the bagger. He said a handful of swear words and had a conversation with the checker that should not have taken place in front of customers. The second trip I was surprised when I had 2 cases of 36 waters and a case of gatorade (along with my groceries) and got no offer to help me out to my car. I am not sure if its a normal practice for them to help people out or not, but I would think that with a load that heavy, offering a lady help out is common courtesy. As I was walking out in disbelief, there was an elderly lady coming into the store. I stopped to let her come through the door. As she came in, a stock person went charging past me pulling a big cart of boxes and just about "took out" poor grandma. I guess I stopped there just because? It is a great store for the most part and I will continue to shop there. I just hope the staff gets more training. read more

Great for the $ I save however, the produce stinks!!! The checkers are brain dead and the baggers must be sniffing glue in the back room!! The employees have the personality for a door knob!! You guys need to either get your employees motivated or can them because they are REALLY bad!! read more

I love this place. I started shopping here right after they opened. Great selection and prices are unbelievable. The only thing I don't buy here is beef, as I go to Genes for that. This place is never crowded and if there is ever a line to check out they call another cashier up right away. I like shopping here so much I never go to Safeway anymore unless its something I need in a pinch. Do yourself a favor. Shop at Safeway. Then shop at Smart and Final. Compare your receipts. You will save a ton of money. Their store brand, first street, is excellent. Why do you think all the restaurants shop here. I highly recommend Smart and Final to my friends and family. read more
