Having heard good reports from friends, we decided to give the Smisby Arms a try. A small car park leads up to the entrance to the pub; as we entered we were met with the warmth from a fantastic open fire a good start. The eating area is multi-tiered and is adjacent to well-stocked bar, a good variety of beers, spirits and wine were on offer. The whole place had a homely feel and was decorated tastefully with seasonal snowman and tinsel. The menu is a vast one and there was a specials board too! All the dishes looked tempting from the sea bass curry to the shredded chilli beef, the choice was a difficult one. Opting to skip the starter, in hindsight a wise idea, the portions were huge. I opted for the Smisby Chicken chicken with mushrooms, bacon and prawns in a tomato sauce, delightful. My wife had the equally impressive haddock and broccoli bake with a cheddar cheese sauce. Both came with a massive bowl of chips and peas, you could have had potatoes and vegetables instead. Portion sizes to sate most appetites. Feeling extremely full, it was a tough choice whether to go for a pudding, but I decided on the Chocolate Brownies and Vanilla ice cream. Again two largish brownies, but very light, with a rich creamy ice cream, a great dessert. Overall a great meal, good service and best of all, the food is homemade, we will return! read more
