Ambiance was great. Food was okay. Drinks were good, but we just had beer. The nickel and diming is insane. We paid $175 for a private space for 11 people and were still charged $7 a person for "game fees" and another "fee" for "employee appreciation" or something like that. Essentially, an auto gratuity with no option to remove. It wasn't all their fault, but half of the drink cart spilled as our first round was delivered, which ended up making it ~an hour before our first round arrived. Then they got there and the drinks were wrong, and rather than bringing the correct drinks, they brought a receipt to "prove" what we ordered. Overall, not worth a 20% auto gratuity. First time visitors and there were 4 of us. We had reservations which we had extended for an additional hour (total of 3 hours). We were seated pretty quickly, but there were some definite pros/cons to this place: Pros: The decor is amazing. The number of games was great. The game teacher was super friendly, very helpful and was my favorite worker at the facility. He said his name a couple of times, but not sure how to spell it. He came by at one point to teach us one of the games, which was very easy to understand with his tutorial. Our server replace my soup with a salad after it was too spicy. Food is decent, but grilled cheese/soup for $15 is pretty expensive. The grilled cheese was just a basic grilled cheese, nothing special and the soup was way too spicy. Son ordered the mac and cheese and we should have gotten that, it looked really good. Maybe other entrees were better. The brownie was REALLY good. The server was nice, but they seemed short-staffed which led to us waiting a long time for the server to come by and bring the food/drink refills. Cons: The place had just opened at 11am and yet the booth's seats we were led to were very dirty. They were soft, cotton seats and there were crumbs/dirt all over them. We tried to order drinks right after sitting down and nowhere in the app we had to (have an account for - Toast) sign into had drinks listed. Those didn't show up until after I went up and asked the bartender about it. If you open up at 11am, then everything should be ready to go, I shouldn't have to run around trying to find the server/bartender to figure out how to order something to eat/drink, especially after she said "Oh scan this QR code to order things." Nowhere on the website does it mention that the food isn't available for purchase until 11:30. We hadn't eaten breakfast and were pretty hungry by then. Food didn't show up in the app until then so we could order it and it took a long time to come out. I told the server/host twice that we had an extension for 3 hours after she kept mentioning we had 2 hours. Then she still came by to ask us to vacate our table soon, to which I had to tell her again we were reserved for 3 hours, which she had to go verify. We played a game where you had to use a dry-erase marker, but there were no napkins/paper towels anywhere to clean our boards. It was very COLD inside, even after having been there for a couple of hours. We all ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup. The soup was VERY spicy, even for my husband and son's GF who loves spicy. The flavor was great, but I couldn't eat more than a couple of bites of it. I feel they should indicate that ON the menu. I watched the table next to me order the same thing and watched both people taste the soup and comment on how spicy it was. There was no way most kids would eat it and that is definitely a kid type meal. They did replace the soup with a salad so that is also a pro. There is a kitchen help fee added onto the bill at the end. I didn't mind paying it, but again - something I didn't see mentioned anywhere on the site or until the end. At other places, I've seen notices up indicating this, so you weren't surprised at the end. Maybe I missed the notice though, as the app was a bit daunting at the beginning and seemingly not working correctly, even though I work in IT! I really wish they would rectify a few of the things mentioned in the cons. I feel like they are easy fixes and could turn a 4 star review into a solid 5 star review. Had a gift card to this place so decided to give it a try. Parking is difficult, but average city parking experience. The space is cool, but just didn't like how expensive it was for the quality of food. You order everything on toast and have to give them credit on the speedy delivery of drinks. The game librarians are very passionate about games and were very knowledgeable. We ordered a few beers, I got their grill cheese which was awful. The only thing that looked good at the table was their smash burger. Appetizers looked nothing special and the pizza was awful too. There were 4 of us and a bill that ran us $200 for the evening. A few drinks, a couple low grade appetizers, a kid-made grilled cheese, and $7/ per person to play games at the table. EXPENSIVE. Very cool game cafe in Wicker Park. You make a reservation online, show up to the host stand and are brought to a table. After your party arrives, the host will explain how everything works. You order your snacks and game pass from the QR code, and pay for your own tab (hugely convenient!). You can play one game at a time and the selection is huge! They have cafe drinks, food, (some gluten free options), and lots of alcoholic beverages. Overall a hugely fun time for a date or a group. Not sure what to do for a chill (weekend) evening? Snakes & Lattes made for a really sweet date night or family night! My partner and I made reservations for 2 on a rainy Friday night. Upon getting checked in and seated, I felt like I was in an amusement park restaurant with the buzz of energy and themed decor. Via their QR coded ordering app, I selected a burger + home lemonade and my husband ordered fish and chips + beer. The burger came with the most delicious sweet potato fries (and spicy aioli dipping sauce). My partner's fish and chips came a bit dry and in a strange thick batter, but I was kind enough to share my meal with him. No major complaints because we know the focus of this establishment was the environment and access to their massive game vault. Their menu was impressively extensive, but could probably benefit from being more focused on tried and true hits. We ended up playing two new games: boop and patchworks. They were both fun two player games and were relatively easy to learn. Both were quick moving games requiring a minimal amount of strategy. What blew me away was the customer service, the game librarian's knowledge, and their skill with teaching the rules of a new game with ease. So grateful of their help! I also loved seeing a family of four (with two young kids) playing a game at the table next to us. It's a great spot for all sorts of groups to play games. Fyi, with dinner, drinks, and 2 hours of play, our tab landed around ~$100 for the two of us. I absolutely love this place. The decorations, games, service, and food are all good and overall its a great place to spend the eve evening. However, PLEASE be up front about pricing. I would like to make and informed decision on my purchases. First of all there is a game fee which I understand but then there is also a more than 20% venue fee?? and of course I tip the waitstaff 20% as well. No one is expecting to pay an extra 50% on their tab. This puts me in an uncomfortable situation spending way more than planned and honestly hesitating to return even though it was a good experience. I came to Snakes & Lattes excited to host a group event for my group, but unfortunately, the experience was a major letdown. Let's start with the positives: the atmosphere is great, the decor is fun, they offer a large selection of games, and the food was pretty good. But that's where the positives end. The drinks? Practically undrinkable, so strong they were unpleasant and left at our table. But the absolute worst part of our visit was the staff. I have never been treated so rudely or made to feel so unwelcome. We were sat at a large table in the back and told by the hostess that we could play two games at once due to the size of our group. When we confirmed this with the "game teacher," we were scolded and told no because it made their job harder, they even said they'd speak to the hostess for telling us that in a very "you're in trouble" manner. From that moment on, we felt like we were being punished for simply asking a question. For the entire 3 hour reservation, no one on the waitstaff ever checked on us. We got a few "thumbs up" from the same game teacher, but that was it. To make matters worse, about half an hour in, I received a phone call from the front asking if we were still coming, despite the fact that we were already there. I said yes, and the person on the phone just said "oh okay." Later, when exploring the game room, one of my guests and I were met with sarcastic and rude comments from an employee who felt the need to butt into our private conversation to critique our game choices. Not helpful, not funny, just uncomfortable and unpleasant. Two hours in, another staff member approached us to say several people hadn't paid their $7 game fee and told us to take care of it immediately. The group was confused by the system, which is entirely phone-based. No staff takes your order, you can't pay at the table, and no one offers help unless you chase them down. What kind of place doesn't let you order with a server? Not even asked once if we needed anything. Overall, the attitude of the staff was condescending, dismissive, and unprofessional. For $7 a person, you'd be better off buying a game yourself and playing at home, at least you'll be treated with respect. Disappointing and not worth it. read more

We had a great game night at snakes and lattes! With very little curb appeal, we weren't sure what to expect, but walking inside felt like walking into a Disney world attraction! It felt like a little fairy tale town, perfect for diving into board games or your next D&D campaign. I love how Snakes and Lattes has game connoisseurs. You tell them how many people are in your party, if you want a very competitive game or something more relaxed, and the type of games your party is interested in. They do a phenomenal job in picking the perfect game for your party and really work with you to ensure everyone has a great time. The customer service is outstanding. What stood out to me is that the game connoisseur sets up the game at your table and gives you the instructions so you don't have to worry about wasting time trying to figure it out. And they won't leave until everyone is satisfied. We ordered fries and drinks because we were going for something light to eat. The fries were pretty good but the drink I had was okay. They have an old vault that has since been converted to a dedicated space for their 400+ selection of board games. There's a game master that can help explain the game instructions to get you started immediately (super helpful when instructions take a long time to read). When we got seated by a host in the game night area we were even told this- But it was $7 Game fee or $10 of food. The actual games and people I met were great. The facilities were impressively decorated other than their restroom being a million miles away, which could eat into your game time. Food was mediocre and overpriced but you're here for the company and games, right? Service was slow and the staff could be a bit snippy but I can't blame them when there were only 3 of them working the whole place. They have a mandatory app ordering system. It's is horrible and confusing. The night took a left turn when we checked out (on our phones). We were still charged the $7 game fee. We had to flag someone down since they're always running around and they were very rude and refused to take it off. Even after showing their online listing and telling them their host told us otherwise, we got a run around from one employee to another. I guess their ad could be viewed open ended and purposely vague and we can ignore that for other issues that occurred. We realized later they added a 3% kitchen fee (what is that???)and 20% "Large Group Fee" for a group of people I never met before that night? For an event Snakes and Lattes Advertises for? Then the app was still were asking for a 20% tip. Please Note other reviewers have mentioned the same thing happening. Wish I had read more in advance. None of those fees were advertised in their menu in advance. They only populated when you decided to check out in the app. To say the least I was very upset with their service which felt deceitful and it left a bad taste in my mouth. It feels like they are taking advantage of the gaming community. I don't mind paying for over priced drinks and food when I know what I'm paying and buying upfront. I understand this is an experience and wouldn't have minded $7 game fee if I knew going in but not having transparent fees and also not honoring advertised prices/sales is bad business. Great place for a date! My bf and I went here for a nice date night. You order everything via Toasttab. You can even request the game master to come over to help you with a game or to get a new game. Admission to play any and all games is $8 a person. This is clearly stated when you walk in and the waitstaff will tell you as well. You order food and games using a QR code on the table that easily splits the bill at the end. For $7 per person you get access to SO MANY games. Seriously, so so many games, it's a little overwhelming, but there are plenty of staff to help you decipher. We were taken to the game vault and given a quick review of each section of the games. They had a hearty section of games for 2 players, 4 players and even 6+ players! Jason (I think that was his name) was literally so helpful and knowledgeable about pretty much every game in the vault. He convinced us to try a new game On Tour and it was a funny game with just enough strategy, but not too much. The food was also surprisingly good. The format is straightforward where you pay a flat fee to play as long as you want or as long as your table is available. The servers were very friendly and welcoming, but our food experience was an obvious afterthought. First, the manner and speed of service was unacceptable. While our flatbread starter was delicious, it came out cold. Following this, our 4 main courses staggered out of the kitchen one at a time, with approximately 10 minutes between each person's meal (when they should be served together) which was bizarre-especially when the booth next to us received their food within 10 minutes and it all came together. Second, the food was well-intended, but tasted meh for 3/4 of us. Specifically, the fried chicken was mainly fried batter and a salad was soaked in dressing. Everything was just fine (at best) or untouched after one bite (the $14 feta dip wasn't good at all). They didn't have any cocktails because the person who seemed to be the host/server/bartender said they didn't know how to make any of them. Clearly the place was understaffed and that isn't the employee's problem. Honestly the most annoying part is that soft drinks are $3 for a small glass that was mostly ice, with no refills. I just can't justify the reasoning behind that. It wasn't even a bottle or can's worth. Maybe half a can. Eventually, it got too loud to hear each other during games anyway. read more
