Really nice to not have to deal with providing your own lock. The real unique point of Bodytech is the well-staffed floor and the supervised circuit workout. This is part of membership and is like getting free mini-personal training sessions. When you factor in those features it is reasonably priced and good value for money. I have been a member for 6 years, I think that says it all, right?

I can't say I have experience in gyms seeing this is my first, but I'm definitely glad I picked…read morethis one after a recommendation from a friend. Firstly, the thing that sold me was they have a 2 lane private pool, and surprisingly it's hardly ever busy, usually I'm the only one in there, because I can't stand sharing a lane with 5 other people at a public pool. The gym also has a spa pool, steam room, sauna, and showers with shampoo and shower gel provided. The main feature of the gym is the supervised circuit, a set of 8 different weight machines to work out your whole body. It isn't full blown personal training but the trainers are there every step of the way to setup the next machine and push you till failure to get the most out of your workout. I've definitely seen a good improvement in strength and muscle gain from this. The trainers are also super friendly, and always offer advice and help with learning to use other machines in the gym. The only downfall is obviously all this comes at a price, which is a fair bit higher than a gym like Jett's, it's around 90-150 per month, depending on the term you select. But in my opinion, well worth it, especially for new gym-goers like myself, for the supervised circuit and the amenities. Only other thing is being a highly staffed gym, it's not open 24/7. I think currently it's about 5:30am to 9pm during the week. PS, keep an eye on their website if you're looking at joining, they usually have a decent joining offer.

It's a calm oasis in there, with the most amazing air con and facilities you have seen in a gym. In fact I think gym is too much of a dirty word to associate with this pristine place. Because they keep a cap on membership, there is never a line for the equipment, the instructors are always on hand to dole out helpful advice and they even email to check up on you when you haven't been in for a few days. The facilities available to all members and casual members include a swimming pool, sauna room,a tennis court and a great range of weights/ exercise bikes and heaps of other exercise equipment. There are classes available too, a favourite of mine being tennis fit! And don't even get my started on the bathrooms, and the straighteners available, the shampoo/ conditioner\ bathrobes. They really have thought of everything. Why just the other day I got offered a free hour long facial and massage just for being a member. Have I tempted you yet?

However this isn't the only reason Health and Sports has gained a reputation. This gym boasts state of the art equipment - you can browse the internet while using their cardio machines, a lap pool, sauna and a variety of classes every day run by trained professionals. My personal favourites are the yoga, Pilates and step classes. As someone who finds it difficult to motivate myself to go to the gym regularly, I've found participating in classes is the way to go. Run at set times each week, they are easy to fit in to your day and will push you harder than any independent gym session will. Tip: Personal trainers and massages from trained Physio therapists and chiropractors are also available upon request.

Here is the timeline of events: * I joined in late 2012. At the time they told me that their billing is done through an outside company so that if I quit, I would need to contact the debit company to stop the payments because the gym would not do so. * About a year later (give or take six months) I quit and asked the receptionist for the details of the debit company so that I could stop the payments. She claimed to have "lost" the debit company's details (including their name so I couldn't even Google it!) and told me she would call me back ASAP once she had the answer. She never did. I had to go back in later and demand the details or else I wouldn't leave. I was still charged for my gym membership during this time (whats more, the debit company requires a months notice during which the customer is still charged so I was still paying them 30 days after I was finally given the information that I had to fight for) and they never gave me an apology for the money, time and gas wasted. * Around May 2015, someone on Reddit asked for gym recommendations in the St Lukes area. I told them to avoid this place because they had screwed me over. A worker from the gym (who gave a full name, contact phone number and introduced himself as the person who could help resolve issues) posted a very long, sarcastic, defensive and hostile comment accusing me of lying. The few parts where he offered "help" were very passive aggressive. It was an extremely unprofessional comment and when I replied calling him out on it, he posted another comment vehemently defending his staff because he thought they could do no wrong. His comments were downvoted and he only deleted them when someone else pointed out how bad he looked. * Today, I received an unsolicited spam email from them trying to get me back. The email was quite short, yet had 11 spelling/grammar mistakes that a spellchecker would have instantly picked up on. I usually don't care about spelling mistakes in informal situations but if you're representing a business then you should get it together. I'm finally writing this review because I'm sick of how lazy and unprofessional this gym is and I'm especially pissed off at how they think it's appropriate to keep my contact details and still send me spam two years after I quit. UPDATE: after demanding that they remove my details from their database over the spam incident (and having the same rude reddit guy confirm that he had done so) they sent me another spam email.

This pool is amazing!! Really!!! I certainly took the pool for granted when I lived in Auckland!…read more I am from New York, but lived in Auckland for two years while getting my Masters degree. In those two years I adopted swimming as my preferred fitness activity. I went to the pool whenever I was stressed or sad or bored, and within minutes of entering the pool, I was as happy as I could ever be. This pool has soooo many things you can't find in New York: - As a student, it only cost me $5 or so to pop by for a swim. Almost every pool (aside from the dingy pools) in New York require membership just to be able to walk into the facility. And even the dingy pools require membership outside of Summer. - It's a 50 meter pool. You would be surprised how rare that is. - It has a kiddie pool, hot tub, jacuzzi, steam room, TWO saunas, a cafe, a gym, fitness classes, SCUBA CLASSES (!!!) an incredible locker room with curtains AND hot water.... really just incredible facilities. Nothing in New York comes close to that. Not even remotely. - The price is absolutely insane. Again, I only paid $5 to swim, and they don't force you to get a membership or anything. The only establishment that I've been to that comes close to this pool is Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. But a day pass is $50 USD (So maybe $60 NZD.... just for the day). Yearly membership for the pool alone is over $600. I would do anything to be able to go back to this pool. Count your lucky stars, Aucklanders!!!! ;)

I like it when gyms aren't painful about casual visitors and the ones run by Auckland City Council are really a bargain. We had a good time here as we usually work out without machines so each time we're in a new gym it's all new and exciting. Which is a really helpful feeling to have about exercise. Don't come here though if you're a complete novice; the staff are more interested in posing than assisting the clients. Which is fine with us. There's probably more cardio machines here than I've seen anywhere else along with everything else you might need; weights, kettle bells, Swiss balls, stretching mats... This place is the ideal set-up because it really has everything; there's a cafe, creche, sauna, group fitness and personal trainers, nutritionist and physio all on site. And what's left of the original building's character is beautiful. Aucklanders of my vintage will remember when the Newmarket Pool was the place to go in summer and hang out on the concrete terraces in the sunshine. It's now of course covered in but they did the best job they could retaining the building's Deco character. It's a pretty busy pool and there's no dedicated "frolicking" area so you need to avoid the serious swimmers if you're just in for a dip. The curved spa at the end gets crazy crowded which is less than relaxing but that's what you get in the populated areas. The changing rooms here have some interesting features, particularly the strips of clear glass at strategic height in the showers. So you can have a moderate level of privacy but not for the body parts where you really it. My husband has a hilarious story about one of our visits involving a clearly very body-confident man hoisting his leg up on a bench to blowdry his nether regions - yes with the hairdryer. Personal space being at a premium when it's busy it was apparently quite an eyeful. Not sure this is a selling point but it's certainly bloody funny.

I chose the 'gym' category, but it really is like nothing else - it's so so much better than a gym. Since I was about 15 I have been a massive exercise fan, and I'm always looking for something new to try out. A guy at my work had been going to Ludus Magnus for months and he is in very good nick so when a deal came up for 30 days, I jumped at the chance. I turned up to small but well equipped room that admittedly smelled of sweat and had the vibe that something very serious was about to happen. A very buff guy writes that days circuit on the big blackboard and basically you just do as many rotations of the circuit in the 45 minutes as you can. I love this way of exercising - you get the fun group vibes that act as a powerful motivation, but everyone is so focused on their own workout that no one is watching you. The music pumps, the guys yell encouragement and everyone has an awesome time. Seriously, it is really hard, but it is the best form of exercise I've ever done. The next day i felt muscles I never even knew I had, and the workout is completely different everyday. I would way rather go nuts here for 45 minutes than stroll around a gym slightly bored for 2 hours. If you're looking to spice up your routine i cannot recommend this enough.

With every other gym I would rock on up for two weeks then get so bored of the same old routine then I would find myself stuck in a contract that I can't get out of for another 6 months. So when my workmate told me about ludus magnus I was excited. I have only been there for one session but I am looking to buy a concession pack for 12 sessions. The 12 pack expires after 3 months so it means I can go in my own time and once the sessions are finished it is up to me to buy another pack. The fact that the first session is free means that you get to try it out and if it isn't for you, you can walk away.
