The altar having a fountain behind it is an absolutely stunning detail for the ceremony. The white stone wall by the outdoor tables made for an incredible background for pictures and made me feel like I was in Greece instead of Iowa. The rolling fields around the venue are beautiful for family/wedding party photos. The grand staircase is a classy touch and made for fun entrances by the wedding party. The chandeliers are a gorgeous detail that tied the whole reception area together. I loved having the rooms for the groomsmen and bridesmaids to get ready in, the pool table in the groomsmen's room was a great idea. Well we did our first session which i didnt realize we'd have to sessions two different seasons which makes no sense since she doesnt have inside studio and the next session was for winter. I didnt know this and had to reach out to her. She had yet to even edit the originals. Well winter was harsh and alot of set backs with trying to fit her hours as she only wanted to do later in the evening and winter is COLD!!! well my daughter never got her second session as she never got back to us and then hasnt even edited the originals from the first session. Well my daughter graduates this week and we have no pictures. I paid her like a dummy the full $600 and now she is ignoring my text messages, and my venmo request of $400 which letting her keep $200 is generous as it was a quick 45 min shoot the first time in her hometown and 1 picture was edited as i needed that for her year books and at the time she'd text me back. Very unprofessional and i feel bad as the person who recommended her is like family to her and didnt think she'd do this. BEWARE!!!!! especially for senior pictures if you need someone. Had she done good job i have one kid graduating this next coming year but thankfully found someone way cheaper and wont be two separate sessions (which had she had indoor studio i could of seen two sessions). She would of made almost $2000 off of me with my 3 kids but absolutely not. If she refunds me the $400 ill delete this as its the right thing to do but since im being ignored and its not being refunded i don't see that happening.

There are lots of little touches here and there that are very unique and a nod to the past. I love the creaky wood floors and they've done an excellent job of keeping as much of the original architecture and building intact. You definitely feel like you're stepping into a bygone era. They had a full bar and very decent drink prices. I would definitely rent out this venue if I needed a space in the future.

Depending upon your event, there are a couple of areas to choose from, and the outdoor space is simply beautiful. What made this review a 3 instead of a 5 is two things: 1) Parking. It's on-street and not plentiful near the venue. When I attended, I did a terrible thing (because I got so frustrated with driving around the blocks for parking); I parked on the sidewalk. Not the best choice, I admit. Now I know to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of any event there. 2) The chairs. HORRIBLE. I attended a theatrical production as part of the Great Plains Theatre Conference. Including announcements, the production lasted 90 minutes--90 excruciating minutes. To make sure it wasn't just my reaction, I looked around. What I discovered was an audience of so many people moving, bending, adjusting, and re-adjusting in their seats. It's as if the owners of 40th Street said, "What are the cheapest, most uncomfortable chairs on the planet? Yep! Let's buy those!!" If you attend an event here in which you will be sitting for longer than 20 minutes, bring a seat cushion with you. If you've read some of my other reviews, you'll note that I'm unforgiving when it comes to uncomfortable seating. This venue had the worst by far. The owners should eat their own dog food and sit in those chairs for at least half an hour just to experience what their guests are experiencing. That said, if you're looking for a place to hold an event--and you want something out of the ordinary and memorable--I recommend 40th Street Theatre. If you're a business and want a get away event where your employees can have some nosh and network, I think it's great for that. Standing, chatting, mixing, mingling--40th Street Theatre hits a home run for that.

The venue is available to book for events such as weddings, family reuinions, corporate conferences, etc. According to their website they have a large and a small banquet room which together can accomodate 525-600 people. I had opportunity to visit at the recent Festa Italiana which the AIHS hosts every year as their major fundraiser. It was spacious, clean, modern, attractive and I really appreciated the large, clean women's restrooms. I did not see the kitchen but I've heard from a good source (one of the members of the AIHS) that's it's wonderful and since they used it to cook all that food for the Festa, they would know!

The service is OK, though me and my buddies had weird experiences with one of their bus boys (not really a boy, more like a 60 year man). It was off-putting to say the least.
