However, we made the effort to walk all the way to the end of the street and just before you fall back into the countryside there is a great pub. Inside the Black Swan is a tastefully decorated public house with nicely spaced out wooden tables. This is perfect for a quiet meal, the food is ok for the price. We popped in for an afternoon pint but ended up staying much longer. The bar man had nearly finished his shift but that didn't distract him from giving us a warm welcome. He nearly persuaded us to give the scrumpy cider a try but we opted for a larger and an ale. Outside there is a beer patio next to the pub or a small beer garden through the car park. I'd highly recommend this friendly pub if some of the other places in Henley are too posh or busy for your tastes.

I have spotted a nice soundtrack in the background with the best of 60 music without being the usual hits. The average price of a pint is a beer not so much over £ 3 and their jacket potatoes are just delicious and costs only £ 3.95. Free WiFi is available and the staff is really friendly, inclusive coming to your table for taking orders. The lady who was serving us was pretty much busy indeed but offered the password of the Internet in the establishment with a pretty smile on her face. Black Swan is probably not the most popular pub in this famous high street but it's certainly the most pleasant one in the area.

There is a pool table and dart board and on various days of the week hosts a number of local leagues which merely adds to its genuine feel of a good old fashioned English pub. There is a large garden which basks in sunshine throughout most of the day (when the sun shines) and when it rains a large permanent canopy keeps you dry. The kitchen never fails to produce wonderful food and on certain nights of the week offers a special themed menu, sometimes Curry night, sometimes Gourmet Burger night and sometimes fish night. Every other Sunday the pub hosts a quiz night which is good enough to challenge the Little Grey Cells but relaxed enough to be a fun quiz to take part in. And all in aid of the Air Ambulance. The New Bulls Head (formerly the West End) is quite simply the best pub in Stratford.

Sunday lunch, so much potential, failed in so many ways…read more lunch took 30 minutes to arrive. when it arrived it was obviously microwaved leaving what looked like good roast potatoes a leathery texture. the dining room was taken over by football fans coming in and out and standing watching the TV. the table next to the plug socket that's hanging off the wall was down wind from people smoking outside, the window was closed fully with a finger width gap allowing the smoke to blow in. Such a shame as with some minor tweaks from the management it could be a little gem of a pub.
