Long-term relationship with an outstanding bookstore I first visited Snowbound Books in 2024 when a local, with whom I went to law school, recommended the shop. I'm in D.C., my colleague is in Grand Rapids, and mutual friends have a lovely place in the U.P. We stopped and shopped, then I went back to D.C. with a suitcase full of books. I was hooked . . . from this point forward this was my go-to bookstore. I ordered a Christmas-list full of books, and the crew at Snowbound responded with class. Since that visit, I've made a point to support this, my new local bookstore, throughout the year, both with hardcovers and audiobooks. Snowbound linked up its business venture with the audiobook marketer Libro.fm, which collaborates with local bookstores to offer a seamless alternatives for audiobooks, doing an end-run around platforms that historically have minimized or shut out local bookstores. Libro.fm shares its profits with these local bookstores, and offers great deals with titles in their massive library. Recently, I researched the Snowbound catalog and received 14 books (see the photo). During the same period I purchased, at retail in some cases and with a deep discount in other cases, about 15 audiobooks, which I devoured upon arrival. This may reflect idealistic tendencies, but I would much rather support local booksellers, and audiobook platforms that share their profits with booksellers. Libro.fm meets this requirement for the audiobooks, and Snowbound meets it for new hardcovers. We're lucky to have both, as alternative to platforms that lack any connection with the local markets being served. read more

Up atop the steep, San Francisco-esque street, you'll find Snowbound Books. If you like old, vintage, quaint bookstores (we're talking creaking floorboards), this place is for you! A sizeable selection of books, modern and classic - and a decent children's section, too. Also a great place to find local books / books about the U.P. I mistakenly thought this place would have Half Priced Books prices. Not really - even though the store is older, you're still going to pay pretty close to the cover price. read more

This is such a cool bookstore; definitely the COOLEST one I've ever been to for a few reasons. Firstly, as soon as you walk in the door, you're enveloped with a cozy feeling. The smell of fresh books greets you instantly, and there is cool artwork, and a really good selection of books on the shelves, many, if not tall, which are adorned with suggestions from the staff. I noticed right away there were a lot of cool books that popped out that I don't see at other stores, or maybe the layout was just so perfect that they were more easily able to be browsed. I picked up a fun read, "Isaac Newton, the a$$hole who reinvented the universe," and also some cool gifts. Super friendly staff that were really enjoying themselves. I could have spent all day here, but it happened to be 89 out, so I went ot the Lake Superior beach shortly after for a few swims (in what felt like 33 degree water; good hydrotherapy with the balance of the hot sand, and ice cold water). read more

We happened to stumble across this bookstore on a weekend trip in Marquette and immediately fell in love with it. It's got a good variety of books including different versions of the same book and used options for many. I liked that they had staff recommendations scattered throughout the store for every genre and (at least when I visited) a top books of last year section that the staff had selected. This bookstore is probably the cutest one I've seen on my vacation so far. They fully utilize their somewhat limited space, but it doesn't feel overly crowded. The staff was all fully vaccinated which I also appreciated. They had a really nice section that consisted of of 'unusual' books that most people haven't heard of, which I liked a lot, because it was different from just having the most popular books at the time. They also had a section that was dedicated to each staff member; as an example, one shelf was "Staff Picks- Brad" (not the correct name; I don't remember what the names were), and then they had a few books picked out personally by Brad. They also had a very sufficient selection of books you'd expect to see. Aesthetic is also important for a book store, and this one was on point read more

Five stars for the atmosphere alone, Snowbound Books will always be my favorite bookstore. I could sit on the floor of the small aisles for hours, reading and then purchasing a used book, revelling in the smell of the place. The new journals can be expensive, but the book prices are pretty good, from my perspective. Park in the structure behind the building, since there aren't many spaces right next to it. read more

Snowbound, Snowbound, Snowbound--how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. This bookstore is fantastic. I have found a ton of books here, just on our short visit to Marquette. This place is small, crowded, and piled floor-to-ceiling with books in shelves. It makes me crazy just thinking that I've had the privilege of going here. I love this store. The staff gives recommendations based on what you've read recently, and there are so many books. So. Many. It's a person like me's dream bookstore. Granted, they don't have EVERYTHING. But, they have a darned good selection. New stuff, old stuff, used books, and a cart of two-dollar literature out front. I almost don't want to leave Marquette because of this. Just lovely. Snowbound Books is Marquette's best bookstore. the selection isn't voluminous but it is well curated. It lacks a really strong Philosophy section but really shines as a place to pick up the latest promising novel or nonfiction work. It's strength is really it's employees. The are helpful and gracious. I have been lead to so many wonderful new authors through their recommendations. so if you are prepared to ask for a recommendation you might find a great new novel. read more

I've enjoyed shopping at this establishment since I was a kid. We're talking 20+ years of only knowing this bookstore for being a very quaint place where one could bring a bagful of used books to get rid of and then walk out with a good handful of different used books with little to no money exchanging hands. It was a place that had a LOT of personality and you could find some really cool hidden treasures. I haven't been to Snowbound in a few years and work a very busy night shift schedule. So this past Saturday 9/22/12 I was EXCITED. I had the weekend off for once, I was going to hit some true brick and mortar stores in my hometown of Marquette. When I walked into what I THOUGHT was Snowbound books, I was shocked to see hardly any used books at all!?! It looked like someone had opened up a D-grade B.Dalton's in the little house where Snowbound USED to be. This little quaint Marquette treasure has completely lost it's identity. It really saddened me to walk those aisles seeing nothing but crisp clean brand new books. Maybe one out of every 20 had the look of a used book, which is polar opposite of say 5 years ago when one out of every 20 books were new. I will personally NEVER return and will dissuade any who say they are thinking of going, I will instead direct them to shop on Amazon where they might actually find a good deal on a USED book they're actually looking for (and I'm one to support a local business!). Horrible absolutely wretched to see this once gem of the city become a run-of-the-mill cookie cutter bookstore. I firmly believe that you "dance with the girl that brought you".
