Opinions Unlimited is a marketing research firm that different companies hire to do marketing focus…read moregroup studies. I got started participating in their paid focus groups many many years ago. I am reviewing them from the focus group participant view... Opinions Unlimited periodically calls or emails me when there are studies that might suit me or sometimes they just call when they just need to fill some more seats. They ask a series of questions to determine if I fit the needs of the focus group and then schedule me for a time that I'll come in a participate. Some of the studies have been during the day but most of them are after work hours. They are always paid typically $50-$200 for a single focus group. The focus group session lasts anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. I have been asked to participate in a full day session once, but I declined. When you get there, they have light snacks and sodas. You go into rooms that has a table and typically a single person from the client's company conducts the focus group. There is a large mirrored wall where people from the company will sit on the other side in a separate room and will usually video tape you. They do not use the videos for anything other than reference because you don't sign a waiver allowing them to use your likeness in commercials. The focus group might consist of just questions, watching commercials and responding, trying food items, etc... It's typically interesting and the time goes by quickly. At the end you check out and are handed a check and a parking validation. They always book more people than they need and if you show up and they don't need you, they pay you anyway and you are on your way home! You can only participate like 2-4 times a year, depending on the requirements of the client. Some of the studies I've participated in are for Biore skin products, lean cuisine commercials, army marketing to students, something about computers a long time ago, etc... I get paid for my opinion! How great is that?

Early this month I discovered them via Facebook and took the online survey. On Sunday I got a phone call to see if I was interested in coming in on short notice and answered some more questions. I have never done anything like this before and did not know what to expect. I am reviewing them from the focus group participant view... This was a full day session, with about 30 other participants and paid $250. For anyone who does not drive a car Houston Metro #20 & #47 conveniently will drop you off on the corner of Woodway & Post Oak LN, a quick walk from the complex of buildings consisting of Riverway 1-7, and #3 is not hard to locate. Depending on where you live in Houston and the time you have to be there, you should have little problem...I live in Upper Sharpstown and it was a 90 min., 2 bus, trip to be sure to get there by 730am for the 8am check in. When you get there, they have light snacks and sodas and check-in is easy. The Deli Lunch (In this case it was sandwiches, chips & a cookie from Panera), is well worth it. While, for certain reasons given us, I can't talk about what the Focus Group I participated in was about (other than "About 8 hrs"....hee, hee!) I WILL say that it was a very interesting and informative day, and the people running things were friendly and encouraging and helpful. At the end I was given a check for $250 and went on my way. For those who think they would never be chosen for one of these in a million years, due to age, race, political persuasion, sexual orientation and other notions... I am a 59 yr. old Conservative single white heterosexual male, and I saw plenty of people, male and female, white and black and Hispanic, around my age, or older and a couple of disabled people in wheelchairs.. Oh, and they also consider people who identify as "Non-Binary/Gender Fluid. They have been in operation since 1979, and in Houston since 1996 and appear to be a very highly respected outfit. If invited to participate again, and it is on a day off, I would not mind doing so.

Hired to record a hotel meeting / conference event since we did not have another videographer…read moreavailable. We have been doing this for 10+ years and never had such a bad experience. The only good thing I can say is he showed up 20 minutes early. Showed up in shorts and a t-shirts. Equipment broke down in 30 minutes. Backup equipment was obsolete and still used old tape system. Blamed us for not telling him what to wear to a hotel event. Wanted to charge extra for 24-48 hour video delivery of unedited content. Biggest nightmare ever had to buy the videographer pants, collar shirt, and belt just too look professional. His camera and equipment were not well taken care off. Memory cards, cable etc were stored in food containers. The cameras were stored in plastic shopping bags. Memory cards could only hold 30 minutes of footage 16 GB cards. He knew footage would be lost when memory ran out before even showing up or starting to record. Everything that we can think of was bad quality including his attitude. Stay far away from this business. He even threaten us to call our client if we continued to ask for a refund.
