Good location off of Tobias Gadson Blvd here near 526 in West Ashley. I was very impressed with the organization of this location. Definitely recommend an appointment for Social Security Issues. I was having to get assigned as person responsible for my mother's finances since she had a stroke in January. Staff here made it easy and helped me with knowing how to go to her bank and get the proper paperwork and account set up. They also gave me the information that they needed back from her bank. I tried to tell her that I had my mother-in-law's death certificate. She muttered back and HUNG up on me! I simply would prefer to NOT to receive any further salary which would need to be returned. Typical government run agency! TERRIBLE! Yesterday I waited on the phone about 10 minutes, then got disconnected. Again, I called back and this time 20 minutes went by and I got disconnected. Each time I called I was given an approximate 30 minute wait period by an automated voice. Today when I attempted to call back again I was told an approximate 40 minute wait period! NEVER got to speak to an actual human being! Worse case scenario, we should be allowed to leave our phone # and a SS agent should then return our call as is the case with many business' read more

every time I call, the line rings and then no one answers or I get hung up on without having speaking to anyone. I mailed in an application to receive a new social security card and a month passed without receiving any mail from them and I called and was told they do not have the application. they submitted an application over the phone for me and another month had passed and I still haven't received any word or mail from them in regards to that. I was also told to mail in my passport for proof of identity and it's been lost. I'm at a loss for what to do, now I need to resubmit another application and pay for a new passport. it's ridiculous. read more

I was dreading changing my name after being married, and I was right. After reading previous reviews, I decided to bite the bullet and just go and get it done. The sign out front said the estimated wait was 45 minutes without an appointment. After 45 minutes, I started getting antsy and at the 1 hour mark even more. After 1 hour, 30 minutes my number was finally called and I was so embarrassed to not have the proper paperwork completed before approaching the window as I thought I had all of the proper documents. I wish there was a more clear direction or sign that the paperwork needed to be completed for name change. The nosey officer couldn't even direct me to the knook hiding behind literally everything. I am grateful for the woman behind the glass, however. She had patience for me to go get the paper and come back to her window to complete it and all in all a very smooth and quick process following these mishaps. read more

I was dreading going to the social security office but I have to say it's a very tightly run ship. Fast and efficient. It needs to be because the place was packed and a little overwhelming for the person who has never been here before. It reminded me of the DMV actually but I think more efficient. Once you enter you sign in on a computer and identify the reason for the visit. Then listen carefully for your number to be called. The whole process took me about an hour. The gentleman at my window wS kind and a pleasure to deal with. He explained my process and repeated as necessary. The only problem at this office was the full parking lot. They have a big lot but every space was taken. I had to circle about four times before a space opened up. Just be aware of that especially if you have an appointment. read more

After driving 40 minutes and sitting outside in the hot sun I finally got called to a window for questions about my Social Security. Ms. Majors was the representative and rolled her eyes the minute I sat down. She was very rude, curt and robotic in her approach. I asked her to explain a few things and she simply said, "I'm not here to have a conversation with you" . While reaching for the letter I received from Social Security she stopped me and said,"I don't need to see your letter I already know what's in there. "She had no clue what I was about to say! I was handed a lot of paperwork and told most people comprehend this- insinuating that I was stupid or something. I've been in there before several months ago and the service was wonderful. I came here to get a new SS card after getting married. I arrived at 3pm on a Friday and waited for about an hour. The door is locked PROMPTLY at 4pm. The officer there warned everyone in the waiting room about this and said that if anyone had forgotten anything in their vehicle, now was the time to remember it, because if you walked out the door after 4pm, you would not be getting back inside the building, no matter how long you'd been waiting. I came here on a Friday at 1 pm. There were about 20 people in there, some together as a group. So I figured it should go by pretty quickly. I had been to the SSA two years ago so I looked for the kiosk I had to check in with last time. It was no longer there and the security officer told me to wait at the sign up front to be called. They ask you what you are there for at the window and print out a ticket with a number. The place has been spruced up with some nice hardwood looking laminate floors. It took me an hour of waiting to stand at the window for 5 minutes to change my name. I don't know why some people take so long when you can do a bunch of things online. Sadly a name change is not one of those things. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by my visit here. I waited a bit too long before changing my name on my ss card after I got married but they were more than happy to help me out. The security guy at the front desk was very friendly and helpful as I had no idea what I needed to do once I got in. I did fill out all of the paperwork in advance so I got to be in some sort of express lane. Once I went to the counter, I was there for maybe five minutes. The lady who helped me out was happy to answer my questions and made the experience so much easier than I expected it would be. Their hours are crap! They are a branch of the Government and they can't even be bothered to be open for a full day on Wednesdays!? It's bad enough they aren't open on weekends, but to close early one day out of the week is just assinine! Also, the parking lot is way too small! It was impossible to find a spot for the first 15 minutes I was there and because the lot is so small, I was was having trouble either staying out of the way of other vehicles or just turning around in the lot! Lastly, the wait is awful! The lobby was completely full and the security gaurd kept complaining to people about how loud their phones were! The reason that was obnoxious was because none of us had very good reception anyway! The place is like a fallout shelter as far as cell reception is concerned, so I couldn't even entertain myself while waiting for the 2 hours I was there! read more

I am so impressed by this office! I went here to change my last name since I just got married. I thought it would take forever but I was in and out within 30 minutes! Both people that helped me were so nice and helpful, and told me "congratulations" when I told them why I was there. I was prepared to spend at least an hour here and get horrible service - they really know what they're doing here and get people helped in a very reasonable amount of time. read more

I went in to apply for social security when I reached 67 y/o and the clerk was pleasant, knowledgeable and kept trying to make sure all of my questions were answered. Now 2 years later I had a question so I called him and he promptly returned my call and directly gave me the information I needed.
