My husband and I swooned all the way home as we polished off Sofia's AMAZING 8 oz (small!) I've been driving by this place, set back off the road in a strip mall, for several months. Originally I wasn't enticed to go there because of their hand-written signs on the road advertising their tacos, burritos, etc., which always kinda gives me the feeling that if the ownership doesn't care enough to invest in slightly more professional signs, then how much do they really care about their food. Well, thankfully, they recently did get proper signage and I decided to give them a try. So happy I did. The place is nothing fancy--a basic restaurant attached to a convenience / liquor store with vinyl-covered booths and linoleum floors. But their food is some of the best local authentic-style Mexican around. They have awesome chicken tacos -- generous size and all breast meat, seasoned and cubed ( and no yucky gristle or skin mixed in like others places do!). Their Barbacoa tacos are also great---fantastic flavor. Salsa is homemade and tasty, as is the guacamole (although I've had the guacamole twice now and it was different both times, but both times good and fresh). They did miss the mark for me on their tamales, which were rather dried up, but everything else I've had there has been so good that I've a feeling I'll be back often! read more

The food here is outstanding! There is a nice patio for outdoor dining. They not only serve good beer, but sell "to go". Everything is very reasonable and the staff is friendly. Only issue is the same as all restaurants, Covid restrictions have ended their indoor dining. read more

I ordered today from Sofia's and it was a wonderful experience. We have someone with a cilantro allergy in my family and they called numerous times to ensure everything was correct. They even separated the cilantro allergy order in a different page making sure everything in the bag was perfect for that family member. Also the food was amazingly delicious. FIVE STARS!!! People of island lake and surrounding areas... please eat here and support this business!!! They are so great!! First of all ..the food is the best around!! We had the Chile renellos (?) steak chimichanga and steak quesadilla dinners . Everything was super hot, super fresh ,and the rice and beans were the best we have had outside of homemade. The steak tasted really fresh as well..which is something I get picky about ...actually tasted like real steak not a cheap cut, and my husband thought the peppers were as good as his moms!! Also they gave us this amazing green sauce , never tasted anything like it !! SO GOOD!! The customer service was amazing as well!!They honored a coupon that was mistakenly on their website ..and comped my added avocado just because:) When we picked up they were friendly and we had a nice conversation! We are just visiting family in the area, but this is going to be our go to when we are here! It's so great to find great food and great service in the same place!! We Went here with friends and it was just OK. I'm not sure why the high reviews. The guac was not enough for the price you pay. In fact all the portions for the price you pay are way to small. !! The horchata was not good at all! We had two different servers were charged for multiple soft drinks when we didnt order more then one. It is Strange inside they sell liquor and have a back gaming room. Just not at all worth going again for paying to high of prices for random service and so so food. Tried this place because I was in the area and it got good reviews. Not sure why exactly. The chips were stale and there's no salsa for dipping. Just a bottle of what seemed like hot sauce to add to each chip. Weird?? Ordered just 2 tacos (1 beef, 1 steak). The menu says they come with lettuce tomato and cheese but mine came with no tomatoes. The beef was bland and very dry and the steak was mostly pieces of fat. I should've guessed it would be bad considering it was noon and I was the only person in the place. You can't beat the price, and any other $1 taco is inferior. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. It's pretty much seat yourself, unless of course it's busy. An interesting place. Decent food but not quite what we were expecting. The menu is a little limited. I had a chimichanga. It was nice and crispy, not greasy, and filled with meat, beans, and cheese. It was served with traditional lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream. Well seasoned and over sized but in a good way. My wife had steak fajitas. They offered a choice between corn and flour tortillas which was a surprise. A pleasant one for my wife as she prefers corn. She wasn't pleased with the seasonings but overall she was satisfied. They were again generous with the meat and there weren't too many onions. So here was where we both felt they fell a bit. As in any other Mexican restaurant they brought out a basket of chips. But no salsa. There were three squirt bottles on the table with different colored sauces. The green sauce was just that. It definitely wasn't salsa verde. It was pale green and smooth. No seeds. It looked like wasabi mayo. It had the same kind of heat on the back end like wasabi but I can't describe the flavor accurately. I've never had anything like it and I'll be happy if I never taste it again. The other two sauces were differing shades of off red. One was somewhat smokey like chipotle but not quite. The other was bland. It had heat but not much else. We might come back and give them another try to see if it was a fluke but we'll bring our own Herdez salsa verde just in case. Good hot sauce can make or break a Mexican meal. In our case it was definitely broken. read more

Trying out Sophia's Place for first-time. I ordered the chicken enchiladas dinner with Verde sauce and guacamole with chips. The guacamole is fresh, but needs more lime and salt. My chicken enchiladas are very tasty with the Verde sauce. I was disappointed that the chicken was diced instead of shredded, which is more traditional and retains more flavor. Sophia's is a good Mexican restaurant. On Taco Tuesday, they have discounted tacos. The chicken quality was average, but not bad. The enchiladas were good too, but the same chicken quality. They had three side salsas: basic red sauce ( mild), salsa verde with chile de arbol ( medium) and a creamy salsa verde (hot). The creamy salsa verde was my favorite, as it was tasty and not too common for the area. The service was attentive when it was only half full. The food arrived quickly after the order was placed (5 to 10 minutes or so). Overall, Sophia's is good. Worth stopping in if you live locally, but not as a destination location. read more

The outside is a little deceiving, but the food was INCREDIBLE! I'm sorry I don't have a picture, because it was so good. The place is clean, though they have a wall of refrigerators like a convenance store in the back of the dining room, don't let it throw you. My boyfriend had the "all you can eat fish fry" which is offered on Fridays. The fish was perfectly cooked, the tarter sauce was delicious and he even loved the mixed vegetables that came with it. I had barbacoa tacos, that were to die for. They bring out three sauces, a fair warning, the lighter green sauce that looks like avocado will kick you in the tongue and give you the hiccups, though was very tasty.
