I had the worst experience at Sofias. The food was great, but the service was horrible. I thought I found a new local place for taco Tuesday. No, I didn't. I found a rude server who neglected everything I asked for or needed and instead giggled away with someone else in the restaurant. I, myself, am a bartender and if I treated a customer half as bad as she treat me I would have been fired a million times over. I think she introduced herself as Vanessa. Like I said, the food was great but I wouldn't recommend dining in. I actually got a yelp account just to make this review because her behavior and lack of hospitality bothered me THAT badly. read more

The wife and i had just left visiting our granddaughter. I said i felt like Mexican, drove for a while and saw sofia's. Went in and sat down. Got these salsa's on a squeeze bottle, loved the concept....no messes. The lighter green one was AWSOME, i couldn't put it down. we ordered, i had the gorditas which were huge, you get to pick 2. I got the chorizo and steak....Very Authentic and GREAT. My wife got a Asada which also was great. We couldn't finish them, i didn't mind. Made a great lunch the following day. The wife Raquel her and her husband own the place. It was hard to find at first, but we found it. They are hoping to get a big sign above the place by next month. Raquel was awsome, great service and everything was fresh. They have great specials all week. We will be back for sure with friends. read more

I have been in Northern Illinois for 9 years so I have tried many Mexican food restaurants. Sofia's is one of two Mexican food restaurants I will go too again. The service was good, the owner very friendly and the food was great. I was not crazy about the salsa but main course more then made up for it. They do serve margaritas. I did not have one but that is next. I will go again soon. read more

Chicken tacos are the bomb here with just cilantro and onion plus their house made jalapeño aeoli.

So glad I found this place. I had a huge pork burrito suizo, my wife had cheese enchiladas and daughter had quesadillas. We all loved our dinners. Have never had a red sauce on Mexican food as delicious as this place. Market, deli and restaurant are all connected...so it's really convenient. The food is good, but a bit on the pricey side. Recently a steak burrito, two fish tacos and a 20 oz. Coke set me back about $17. Their steak does have a terrific flavor, and their (Serrano?)-based green sauce is tasty and has quite a kick. read more

Incredible food, the owners are extremely nice and helpful. Portions are large, and filling. The price is budget friendly. Clean and well cared for. I never thought of going in prior to this week. Big mistake on my part. For those on a special diet, the owner will do his best to address your needs. The Coke from Mexico, is really good. OMG! I was just there for first time. I had a tostada, a taco (onion & cilantro just like a previous reviewer recommended) and a sopes. It was all wonderful but the sopes was outstanding. Yesterday was my first time trying this restaurant, and today was my second. The food at this establishment is excellent which merited a second trip so soon. I have a special affinity for tacos, and Sofia's Place did not disappoint! The steak, chicken, and beef tacos were fantastic. My fiance had chicken quesadillas, which were to her delight. They provide authentic chips and salsa as you wait for your meal, which is an expected, yet pleasant addition. The service is wonderful as well. The two different servers we had were both friendly and attentive. As we were leaving from our second visit to Sofia's Place, we meet the owner and engaged in a brief conversation. He is a very nice fellow, and has some good ideas that he wants to implement at his restaurant in the future. I highly suggest eating here for three simple reasons. This was my first time trying Sophia's Place. There are three Mexican food restaurants in island lake, and I never even knew this one existed! It's located next to the place I get my nails done, so I wanted to give it a shot. I ordered a variety of tacos (chicken, ground beef, chorizo and steak). And my friend ordered the veggie taco dinner. We were given chips and salsa when seated, unfortunately the chips were prepackaged (most Mexican places make their own) and the salsas weren't cold (which they have always been when visiting other Mexican restaurants as well). The waitress never made eye contact with me- but gave all her attention and directed all questions to my friend. Since she wasn't paying attention to me, wasn't surprising that she messed up my order. I simply asked for a water with lemon and when she brought it, no lemon. Then when she brought our food (which was ready very fast...so that was awesome) my order was wrong. I received the chicken, ground beef and chorizo taco with beans and rice (which I hadn't ordered) and there was no steak taco. I like to try one of each so I can leave good review after I visit a place for the first time. But I never send food back because I don't know what they'll do to it lol...anyway, besides the waitress not being so great, this places makes TASTY Mexican food! The ground beef was seasoned perfectly. The chorizo was by far my favorite, seasoning and texture on point! The chicken wasn't very flavorful so I put a lot of the salsa verde on it. However, the beans and rice weren't very good. Super bland. Not a seasoning added. I feel like if there wasn't salsa or hot sauce to pour on top- it was basically baby food. Even though my experience wasn't top notch the first time around, that chorizo was the best I've had in a long time and I will be bringing my husband back here to try it too.
