The student clinic was comfy and spacious but the student massages I received (2 by 2 different therapists) were just average which was disappointing. I understand that as a student you wont be a ROCKSTAR therapist right out the gate but I personally just felt that the massages I had from Cortiva and NW School and a few others were far more advanced in skill than what I received here and I don't want to throw down 10k of my money to just be an "average" therapist. The owner is very pleasant and hands on and seems to have a true passion for the massage school and the industry and art of massage, however, I just felt it was not as deep of a curriculum as what I am looking for in a school. If you are looking for a local, good education to get started then I would recommend this school BUT I would not do it without recommending continued education courses to specialize in more modalities as soon as you graduate. In my opinion, I just felt the curriculum didn't offer the courses I wanted built in to my education for the cost, this school is great for others and many successful therapists come out of it...just not for me. I thought "Oh, this will be easy and I'm just really using it as platform to get into Physical Therapy." I believed in the power of manual therapy, but I didn't truly think it was that technical or transformative. Throughout my time at Discovery Point that all changed. It was definitely not easy for me and I realized that massage school was in a lot of ways harder than when I was in University. The instructors at Discovery Point are truly marvelous and knowledgeable. Without their guidance I would not be the confident and humble therapist I am today. Time and again I find that my grasp of anatomy and my ability to truly feel tissue that I cultivated at Discovery Point has put me ahead of the pack. This school not only prepares you for the field, it shapes you. My life has transformed in many ways from this experience because of these beautiful mentors. My passion for learning has been reignited and I thank all the teachers/faciltators at Discovery point for all that they do.

Many of the instructors are excellent…read more The manager of the school is personable, intelligent, and knows how to interact with many different personality types. She went to great lengths to accommodate my individual needs due to my health condition, helped to personalize and tailor my educational experience, and overall treated me (and pretty much everyone else, from what I saw and heard) with respect, caring, and consideration. I had some mixed feelings and some negative experiences throughout my time at this school, which is why I waited so long to post a public review, but in all fairness, many of those experiences are due to my own "stuff" and are not the fault of the school. I was enrolled in the week-end program. 2 10-hour days of classes back-to-back on Friday and Saturday, then a 6-hour day of classes on Sunday, often with homework or study or giving massage post-classes, felt like a lot to do within a short, compressed period of time. By Sunday afternoon my brain and body were often both fried and unable to absorb much of the content. I'm not sure how the school could've structured it much differently, though, and without the week-end program option, I (and many others) could not have gone through the program at all. The school has 3 separate floors and no elevator, which sometimes felt frustrating when I was dealing with a months-long ankle injury that I sustained during the process of receiving a massage at home from an LMT who is unaffiliated with this school, in order to complete a school assignment. I put a lot of effort, time, thought, work, and money into my massage school education at this school, and in hindsight it is one of the few times in my life that I feel that I may have invested these resources poorly. However, it was my own (frequently questioned!) choice to stay in the program until the end. My self-care during this program was much worse than it usually is, in a large part due to the program demands. The compromised self-care definitely took a toll on my physical and emotional well-being. I graduated with a 4.0 gpa, but my passion for and enjoyment of practicing massage was dampened by the end of the program to the point that it never recovered. I never practiced massage professionally. I tried to force myself to want to, and stayed optimistic for a long time post-graduation that I would bounce back eventually, but finally realized that my enthusiasm for practicing massage therapy has been permanently extinguished. Some of my favorite moments during the program involved working with some of my stellar classmates, learning from and connecting with a couple of the instructors and also with the school's manager, giving massage to paying community members in student clinic, giving massage to many of my own practice clients, engaging with some of the anatomy and kinesiology course material, and creating my own board game to help in learning the muscle attachments (happily, creative learning is appreciated and encouraged at this school). Attending this school is one of only 3 regrets that I have in my life. However, once again, a good portion of the reasons behind that are not the fault or responsibility of this school or its faculty or staff. Understand that this may not be an easy educational journey, even if you are smart, resilient, and start out passionate and enthusiastic about massage therapy, healing, and helping people. Recommended for an excellent massage therapy school education, with reservations.

Massages are great but wow... it's a loud place…read more I just want to say the massages are great here. Without question. And the staff are wonderful. HOWEVER, this is one of the loudest massage facilities I've ever been to. I've been here 3 times now and the last 2 times the room I was in has a sliding door to what I assume is another massage room. This time, while I was getting a massage, I could clearly listen to the conversation going on in the other room and I don't believe those people were being overly loud. There is just NO soundproofing between their walls. In addition, I'm assuming there is a break room or something just around the corner and at one point I could hear a group of people laughing and talking loudly while they were on break or something. So just know that if you like to have a quiet environment while getting your massage, this may not be the place for you.

It was a good massage, it was actually my (student) massage therapist's first day of clinic, so I was her very first massage client. For a first timer, she was very good, and I could imagine she would only get better. My only critique for her was that she seemed a bit nervous and asked me constantly if this was ok and if that was ok, but I supposed it's better to check in too frequently than not at all. As others have mentioned, there was only a curtain separating my table from other clients, so I could hear their conversations quite clearly. (One Yelper said "this new location has individual rooms" and that review was dated December 2012, but that wasn't the case when I was there in January 2013.) The woman getting a massage next to me was a massage therapist herself, so she and her student massage therapist had quite a bit of conversation about the profession, techniques, muscle groups and whatnot. You really can't beat the low price of $35 for a one hour massage. I don't live in West Seattle so the location isn't exactly convenient for me, but I figured the price made up for the trip a little bit. I had a friend coming out to visit for a long weekend from the East Coast in February, so I made appointments for the two of us so she could have a massage before we went to the airport on her last day in town. I made the appointment online and there was no easy way to mark that I wanted a massage for 2 people, so I logged in, made one appointment, and then made another appointment in my name again. I didn't give my friend's name because I figured I was the one handling the schedule for her visit and I wasn't even planning on telling her until she got out here what we were doing because she was handling a lot at work before flying out here. A few days before my friend's visit, someone called me from Northwest Academy for the Healing Arts and asked me if I had meant to make two appointments or if that was an error. I explained that I had made one for me and one for a friend, and she asked my friend's name and said that she would change the appointment to my friend's name so that if anyone else looked at the appointment schedule, they wouldn't have the same confusion. I gave her my friend's name and spelled it for her and confirmed that we would both be there on Monday. On the last day of her trip, my friend and I went out to West Seattle for our massages, and when we walked in, the man behind the desk looked instantly confused that there were two of us. I said we had two appointments, and he said "Oh, we figured one was a duplicate in the computer, so we deleted it." They offered to reschedule us, but as my friend was flying out the same day, I let her take the massage. The man behind the desk offered to give her massage for free and reschedule me for a free massage for my inconvenience. I went to a nearby coffee shop to hang out for an hour while my friend got her massage. When I came back an hour later I asked if I could choose a time for my massage then, and the man replied, no, our computer is down, you'll have to do it online. In hindsight, I wonder if the same computer system that was "down" was the one that showed the duplicate that they deleted? A few days later, I went online and made an appointment for myself. I drove out to West Seattle in the morning, and when I went to check in for my massage, a different man was there. "Oh, I tried to call you," he said, "We had to cancel because our student was sick." I showed him my phone, that I didn't have any voicemails, any missed calls, any recent calls that day. Then he said "I emailed you." I opened my email right there on my phone, updated it, and showed him that I didn't have any emails either. (Aside from the fact that email isn't the best way to get in touch with someone with a last minute update - like your appointment for an hour for now is cancelled.) I explained that this was my second time showing up for an appointment just to find it wasn't happening, and I don't live nearby, and clearly they have my phone number since they had called me before, and he just kind of said "Oh well, sorry." I left there annoyed that day and haven't tried to go back since. Interestingly, I got an email a few hours LATER that said that the appointment was cancelled. At the same time, I also got an email thanking me for coming in and saying they hope I had a great massage! It's probably automated, but even so, it doesn't reflect that they cancelled on me? That takes some nerve. As I wrote at the beginning of this review, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I won't be going back. The way I figure, $35 for a one hour massage might be a good deal, but not when you factor in driving out there two more times for no reason!

I decided to tour some schools anyway, and even before my walkthrough here ended I knew this was the place. The owners and teachers have been in the business for decades. They are all incredibly concerned with how the students are doing and what they're understanding. I love how Alexandar embraces all styles of massage and allows the students to find their own flow rather than memorize sequences. We get plenty of clinical instruction as well as relaxation and spa, making for a well-rounded LMP. I've grown intellectually here, but this school also embraces and encourages spiritual and emotional growth. It's a holistic program that nurtures students and makes sure we have a solid foundation with the business side of things as well. It's truly been an amazing experience learning here.
