Obviously here in San Diego we have a ton of great options for tacos and burritos - from the dozens of independent, family-run taco stands/shops, to decent chains, all the way to high-end, gourmet Mexican cuisine restaurants. With so many options, it's rare that I'd go to a "cookie-cutter" chain like Sombrero. But it's officially National Burrito Day (as official as any marketing campaign gets, I guess!), and Sombrero had a special deal compelling enough for me to finally try it after passing the Lake Murray location hundreds of times, sometimes on my way to Chuy's on El Cajon Blvd. Well, the NBD marketing worked, I tried Sombrero for the NBD deal, and I can now confirm my predilection to go to non-chain, independent taco shops. Sombrero was good enough - a solid 3-star - and I give it an extra star for the $7 burrito deal. But, I feel like at regular price ($15 range) I would be disappointed - nothing bad, just nothing special. To be fair, or perhaps generous, I would recommend Sombrero for those occasions when they best meet needs - like late night when other places might be closed, or convenience of a drive-thru, or kick-ass deals on their app. read more

Really disappointed with my order, I paid for a FULL fries and got a sad half-filled container that looked like leftovers. I bought this for my two kids to share. The picture speaks for itself. For how expensive everything is now, serving portions like this is honestly ridiculous. If you're going to charge full price, at least give people what they paid for. Always good quality. They have some great deals now and then. They have fantastic carne asada fries, and a nice salsa bar.

We love their bean and cheese burritos and their salsa bar!! I know that's so basic but hear me out. The tortilla is grilled outside yet still fluffy texture. The beans are creamy with a mild salty. The cheese is melted by the warm beans and tortilla. Anyone can make a bean and cheese burrito. But you can tell the pros by the way they pay attention to the details and how they construct it. This place has amazing delicious food and wonderful Customer Service I've tried a variety of things including shtedded tolled tacos and a beef taco, enchiladas, carne asada burrito, chorizo, Chile Relleno, beef sope. Also there salsa is so good and the carrots are not spicy & very flavourful. I cannot have spicy food and I've been to so many Mexican restaurants, when I ask them if their food is spicy, they always say no and ends up being spicy. I can't believe I'm writing this review as I come here quite often. I've NEVER had an issue with my food here and tonight this food made me never want to eat here again. I normally get the Carne Asada Fries Supreme and it's always delicious. However, this was extremely horrible. The fries were not even cooked all the way through, they were cold as heck and tasted awful. I couldn't even finish my food. We went to Sombrero Mexican Food located by Lake Murray La Mesa, it was our first visit, we went through their drive through and the food came out fast but the quality was not okay... The amount of food did not worth the money we paid for... the chicken chipotle bowl was only 1/3 full and the bag of chips was so small... the green sauce and red sauce were both so watery The burrito was as small as the size of my hand, all our orders were flavorless but salty... Solidly consistent, hence the fourth star. While I have a favorite taco shop, this is my backup one for when my favorite is closed, since it's family run. This location is easily accessible from Lake Murray Blvd. There's plenty of parking available too. I'm not a drive thru fan personally, but they have one. I prefer going inside, there's plenty of seating and it's always clean inside. There's also a small amount of outdoor seating with umbrellas. The service is pretty good, they're always nice here. They even offer a sort of rewards program that I believe is done by phone number. I've received a few offers, but I'm not a regular customer, so I'm sure it's a better deal for people who come more often. They have a fairly large menu, including kid's meals and various specials. I've never been left hungry after ordering from here. I've tried quite a bit of the menu and everything except one item was good. Eating out has become a luxury these days - I just signed up for their rewards program and was able to get a bean & cheese burrito for $1.40!! You don't see those prices anymore. Ordered nearly $70 worth of food. Go through the drive thru & am told they don't have my order. I park and go in (in my pajamas) & they are continuing to argue w/me even though I had the online receipt.Finally, I can see that the woman in charge found it on her screen. She spoke with the cooks & I had to approach her to confirm they started making it (now 25 minutes past the original ready time). She never told me what was going on. I had to figure it out by their body language. So I sat and waited for all that food finally being made with zero explanation/communication. When the food was done she brought it out & quickly went back behind the counter avoiding me. No apologies, no offer of a discount or free soda while I waited for all that food to be made. Nothing. I really do not appreciate being dismissed like that. My husband had been frequenting this establishment at least 1 up to 3 X's a week like clock work. There are so many Mexican restaurants around. It's San Diego. I could throw a rock & hit one. What is the biggest factor in which place to spend my hard worked money at? Customer service. What happened to accountability? Manners? They didn't do anything exceptional to keep their Loyal Customers. Then I found Sombrero not much further from my home!
