We loved this hotel. Landscape painting must have been very lucrative back in the day, because Thomas Somerscales built a lovely home in the heart of Cerro Alegre -- and a short walk from Cerro Concepcion, the neighborhood where you'll want to spend most of your time in Valpo.
Staff members were very courteous and helpful -- showed us exactly where to find good restaurants, which funiculars were functional (some are always down for repairs), and how to get to every place we wanted to go. Room was very comfortable, breakfast was included, and very tasty. No lift, but they'll help you with your bags.
If you are driving, they have a locked garage for ONE car -- so be sure to request it when you book your room, because street parking in Valpo is San Francisco-like -- i.e., good luck finding a space, and when you do, it'll probably be halfway up a steep hill. read more
