First time I went here, I was all hyped up and loved everything. Next few times, didn't entice me as much. The burgers and sandwiches are alright... I can never eat the whole thing because it's not that tasty. The drinks are OKAY. Nothing special. Don't like the ice they use. Desserts are OKAY only too. Yes as Nicky B. says it was a long drive but worth it -- because curiosity got the best of us, thanks to the ads we frequently see for a restaurant chain 50 miles away! We initially didn't know how to order, and tried to go inside the restaurant. Actually, you order from an intercom box, either by the outside eating area or by each parking stall and the food is delivered to you. Duh! Drive-in! The food was good enough, although the tater tots were too salty and the onion rings were too sweet and we were given no napkins. The menu is extensive, maybe too much. I still prefer In-n-Out burgers but at least we tried this place, finally....and you could say the ads worked because it seems a lot of Bay Areans make the trek to Tracy to try out Sonic Burger. Pretty good. Been to this location more times than any other sonic location that's available.. It's fast and good food. The food is always fresh and hot. Their shakes and ice drinks are overrated.. Yes u can mix it up and make it your own flavor, and some are crazy. But not all are good as what they sound like. I tried the pop rocks watermelon slush... Something is wrong with you if you don't like Sonic. My first experience at Sonic was completely magical. My sister and I saw ads for this place on TV and after a few hundred airings we decided if there was a sonic within 100 miles, we were going. Sure enough there is on in Tracy! We made the 35 minute drive down some back farm roads and despite the welcome to Tracy smell of cow manuer, it wasn't a bad hike. We found the place with ease and pulled into a stall. The menu was unbelievable... so many choices!!! We pressed the order button and ordered our food. Within 10 minutes our food was ROLLERSKATED out to us!!! The food was amazing and the cherry lime aid? omg, like heaven to my tongue. After we ate, we burned all the calories off at the mall across the street. Oh man I heard that Sonic is the best and finally after 27 years I try it out and boy am I glad!!! We came here during one hot day on the drive back to the Bay. The milkshake was perfect since it was so hot. The shake was so think and delicious and over all divine! I enjoyed trying this place out because it's like a time capsule sort of speak. Love Sonic! Too bad I have not found one in LA area. We drove right up to the car hop parking and ordered from the drive up menu. The waitress brought our food to us on a tray. You have the option to sit in your car and eat or sit in a picnic area outside. Since our car was packed, we decided to sit outside. Food is okay. Love the texas toast breakfast sandwiches. I have relatives in Tracy so I don't have to travel much further when I get to town. I hear that there isn't any in the Bay Area and that this is the closest location. Being from San Diego, there aren't any Sonic's down here either so I always make an effort to go here when I visit my cousin in Tracy. I must say the food here is pretty dope as far as fast food is concerned. The last time that I went was around New Years and I picked up the SuperSonic Burger combo. It was SO GOOD. I can compare it to a jumbo size version of In 'N Out's burgers. The burgers here are very good. I've also tried their hot dog before and thats great too. One thing different about this place is that they serve tots as a substitution to french fries. It's a pretty cool concept. As a true drive-in they try to keep their roots intact by having to order outside. I keep hearing about their cherry limeaid but I have yet to try it. For sure on my next visit. Is it worth the hour drive from the Bay Area? I can't necessarily say yes to that but if you are within 20 minutes of it, I'd say it's worth the drive. Happy Eating! read more

Preface: After literally decades of watching Sonic commercials on TV in the Bay Area before this place arrived in the (greater) area, and wondering 'What the hell is that?' it's a privilege to be writing this review. Now, in the words of my Uncle: ALLEZ! CUISINEZ! Sonic specializes in tons of unique menu items and really breaks up the monotony of the usual fast food experience! The car-hop/drive-in format forces you to buy-in to their process and eating in your car raises the stakes in a fun way(you'll remember to ask for napkins). Everything is deep fried (I even had deep fried cheesecake as a special one time), crazy salty and you'll definitely feel like a pregnant sow, listing to one side with your eyes mostly closed, taking labored breaths, starting to nod-off five minutes after you finish your food. Do yourself a favor and agree before you go you're NOT going to look up the nutrition information until at least the next day. That said, the food is damn satisfying. Especially after a day of wine-tasting in the Livermore valley (Mmmm... combining vices...). Chili-cheese tater tots, toaster breaded western burger, chili-cheese Coney dog with everything, Frito pie? Seriously, you haven't lived... Dessert is good, and if I'm driving back to civilization from the Tracy area, I'll make a quick stop for a Blast or banana split. Infinitely customizable drink flavors are a treat too, like getting a cherry-vanilla root beer, or an orange-pinapple slush. They're just as good at 10:00pm as they are on a hot afternoon. Be sure to check for promotional menu items, like sweet potato tater tots and brownie based desserts, they do a very good job with those! Health wise, Sonic is probably among the worst food for you. I don't just mean 'out of the common fast food chains,' I mean eating here is actually shortening your life by a number of years. But as John Lithgow pointed out on 3rd Rock from the Sun (in reference to the arguably healthier habit of smoking), "That's off the end of your life and those years are crappy anyway." Enjoy! This place can definitely be hit or miss. The first time I went to this location, I had a sonic burger with cheese and it was pretty good. I would say somewhere between a Whopper and In n' Out burger. The next time I had one of the Toasters with bacon and cheese and it was very dry and did not have much of anything on it. I was very disappointed. I would recommend the regular burgers over the ones on the toast. What I really liked here was the Coconut creme shakes. That is what really brings me back here on a road trip. Sometimes I will stop here just for that and get the rest of the meal somewhere else. The shakes are great, I only wish they were a little bigger. The drive up menus are cool. You just pull up to a order box and place the order over the loudspeaker and then the waiter comes out and delivers the food direct to your car. The thing that it is lacking in an indoor eating area. There are only the drive up spots and a patio area, so it might not be the best in cold or stormy weather. read more

So lately, I've seen a lot more sonics commercials on TV which are pretty funny. I guess its been time after time that me and my gf have been wanting to try sonics. But we always say its too far to drive out to tracy or gilroy. Finally we got the opportunity to try it, coming back from Reno and our snowboarding trip we took a detour that led us to sonics. i guess the idea of the old fashion type drive thru's is kind of cool. but we were in a Mercedes SUV so we were def not going to eat in the car. so we ordered our food and had to eat our food in the windy weather. I got the California burger and onion rings and shared a strawberry limeade with the gf. California burger was ok, nothing special to drive hella miles for, i seriously could get the same tasting burger from in n out or get a big mac from mcdonalds. the onion rings were ok, sort of deformed looking. i probably would try it again if im ever in gilroy but driving out to tracy probably isnt my best option. honestly i feel sorry for the workers cause they have to walk back and forth with everyone's orders. oh and another thing is that we got our order soooooo fast, kind of makes me wonder if they are just pre-making everything in advance. read more

Oh man...the town of Tracy makes eating outdoors a bit problematic. Is this area one big wind tunnel? In any case, I came here on my way home and I was hoping to get a half price slushie. Unfortunately, I got there after 5pm but ehhh oh well, I got a limeade with lemon added plus an order of mozz sticks. Naglee Rd is the home of almost every mass chain restaurant and brand in the country so while searching through all of the options nearby, I saw Sonic and I chose them over all the other options in the area. This is probably the closest Sonics to me (besides the one that just opened in Gilroy). This Sonics is actually in a really good location - it's right in the middle of a large shopping plaza with Target, Barnes and Noble, and other stores, so you could theoretically make a day of it if you're not from the area. The service is very chipper, and fast. They also got my complicated order right, which is a super plus. I always get the Sonic Cheeseburger (large, soft, and delicious - meat patty is a bit thin though, which is typical with fast food burgers, and I always order with no sauce or onions), the tots (mmm, hot and crispy), and the cherry limeade (tart and sweet and bubbly!). Sonic's isn't something I necessarily crave, but my wife and I always make a pit stop here on our way to Sacramento from the Bay Area just because it's something we can't just get everyday. The food is pretty good as you can read in other reviews, but when we went there yesterday, I decided to have a little fun. Since Sonic has its own radio station, the DJ came on and encouraged people to give her a call for requests, shout outs, etc. I decided to call since we were just sitting in the car and send a birthday shoutout. The DJ answered, and I told her that I wanted to send a birthday shout out to my wife, Stella. And not just to Stella, but to "Stelllaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!" (Street Car Named Desire, anyone). The Sonic sign is a beacon for us on Highways 99 and 5. We're in the central valley a lot with the dogs and we always hold out for Sonic. Sure, eating in the car is semi-naughty and gives me feelings of those docus about girls with eating disorders who drive-thru and then binge in the car, but I digress, it is helpful when it's 85 degrees outside, sunny and you've got 3 dogs in a car with open grocery bags of food. You just really need to eat in the car at those times, you know? Somethings are over done in that middle-america kind of way. They have some kind of chili thing with Fritos, some of the slushy things are really sweet. There's a chicken dinner with toast and fries - really, is that necessary? But overall super tasty. They are open from like 6am-Midnight and serve the whole menu (including pretty good breakfast burritos with tater tots) alllll day. Get the Bacon Cheeseburger Toaster, get the tater tots, get a coke or ice tea and reenact those oh-so-catchy commercials. We do. read more

On our way back from visiting my sister way out there in the boonies, a place called Marysville.... We stop at Sonic's. Which makes the two hour drive back home oh so worth it! I finally ate a Sonic this past monday and it was awesome. I'd seen the commercials and heard from the luck few who had been there...I long craved to check it out. And it was well worth the wait and also going slightly out of my way home while driving back from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The food was actually pretty good: tasty and not overly greasy and didn't leave me feeling kinda gross like many other fastfood joints can and do. But, like many already know, the real highlight are the drinks. I got a peanut butter-hot fudge shake and it was one of the best "beverages" i've ever had, hands down. mmm, so good. I think I'll hit up Sonic in Tracy every time I'm driving from SF to LA. It's only a good 20 minutes out of the way (well, add in eating time too) but it is definitely worth it. read more

With all the hype surrounding Sonic's, not to mention their pervasive marketing on TV, I was a bit disappointed with the actual thing. Yeah, it's novel that the servers wheel around on roller skates, and that you can park and eat in a covered spot. But really, the food was only avergae, with the highlight being the drinks (GO CHERRY LIMEADE!) The tater tots were actually a bit worse than what I could make myself at home in the oven, and the burger meat was small. Wow so many 5 star reviews for a place that made us sick for 3 days after eating there! We actually had to stay home from work we were so sick the day after eating there. The food was overly greasy, tasted horrible and I can't see myself eating there again. We had the "SuperSonic cheeseburger", fries, onion rings, and an Oreo sonic blast. The atmosphere was frightening, since when did Tracy become East Oakland exactly? The only thing missing was the gun fire. There were the tumpity thumpity no music just bass and shaking license plates cars, the screaming of profanity, slamming car doors, people burning out in the lot, one of which almost rear-ended my car that was parked in a space! I don't need to be in this type of environment and wouldn't go there again even if the food were excellent. read more

I kept seeing the commercials and i got tired of not being able to experience whatever the commerical said. So i decided to go and see what this place was all about. It was a fairly long drive coming from san jose. Its stuffed in a plaza kind of like Mc Carthey Ranch in San Jose. This place has a new feeling to it. Since were so used to eating at places like Mcdonalds and such, it was good to see something new. Its close to IN&OUT but with its very own touch. You can pull up to the machines outside for a drive in order and sit there and eat, which is new or you can pull through the drive through and get something to go. When i went my friend got a coney (hotdog with chili) and fries. I got myself a Strawberry lime-in-nade. The coney was pretty long and it was good. This Sonic is probably the one i've frequented the most since moving to Sactown. From SJ to RC, i've been here almost too many times... almost. I'll admit that the food hasn't been on par for me, but maybe its just tastes change as we get older? but they still got the tots! can't hate those. in my opinion, the drinks from Sonic is "where it's at"... slushes, cream-slushes, lime-aid's... not to mention they have a happy hour from 2-4pm... i always find myself driving in between those times. funny... hmmm. do yourself a favor, get two drinks for the road! This place would get 5 stars if they didn't screw up the orders so often. Most of the time, they switch my strawberry limeade for a strawberry lemonade, which is better than forgetting items, I guess. I always get two sides of tots (always crispy), a sonic burger (tastes pretty natural), and a Rt.44 strawberry limeade. Usually this place is busy OR they take forever to answer your intercom. I drive here all the way from San Jose whenever I get a craving otherwise I will stop by whenever I'm heading up to Sacramento. After frequent visits, and noticing the lack of good customer service, I've stopped coming here. Otherwise the food WAS good, until I got sick (was vomiting for a whole day). Plus I hate it when Sonic commercials play in areas that don't have Sonics around(like San Jose; wth is up with that?). Honestly out of all the Sonic's I have been too in the Valley this is still my favorite one. The parking lot is a lot bigger than most, they have all their drive up spots are all working and it's a much cleaner environment. The 2 in Modesto, lots of homeless and very very slow and understaffed. The 2 at Turlock are very enclosed and kind of dirty. If I lived closer I'd be going to this location all the time. Omg i have never hear a drive threw read 4 order strips to the car ahead of me to find the right order. A simple order of burgers drinks and frys took us 27 min in the DRIVE-THREW. It was more like park and wait. Then wait some more. Move one car length the put it back into park. One we did make it to the window only took two order tapes to find ours. No receipt returned with our credit card and to end out thirst and hunger we had a bag of cold soggy food. This is a black hole that i will never return to again. read more
