Here the nth time already. I still believe Soogil is one of the best value in town for fine dining/chefs tasting menu. However, competition is heating up with many Korean fusion restaurants popping up everywhere and all at around the same price point. Example: Oiji Mi (one Michelin Star; Naro (from the team that brought you two Michelin Stars Atomix; Genesis House (from a Michelin Star team from Korea; etc. So Soogil must really step up with creative ideas and not simply rely on the tried and true only. We came for their Thanksgiving special menu which besides the turkey option instead of wagyu, was basically the same as the normal menu. We honestly had the best meal at Soogil last night. From start to finish every dish was a perfect 10. The staff - friendly and incredibly hospitable. The space - open, inviting and lovely. There are add ons to the meal and we recommend not missing any of the additions (the uni and caviar dish was INSANE) We enjoyed delicious, beautifully crafted cocktails - we were extra delighted by the details of the ice. And the foooood, the food. Top tier ingredients prepared with the utmost skill and creativity. I really want to highlight one dish and leave the rest for you to go and experience. The foie gras noorungji dish was such a memorable dish. I love seared foie gras and I am used to it being accompanied by some sort of fruit or balsamic reduction. Last night it was an entirely unique preparation of the liver over a phenomenal bed of crisped seasoned rice reminiscent of the best part of dol sot bibimbap (hot stone bowl bibimbap) that always forms a chewy crisped crust where the rice bed touches the bowl. The pea leaves were wonderfully flavored and as we were finishing our dishes we stuck every last grain of rice onto our forks as not to leave a single one behind. Our server/ bartender Sean was multitasking all night but you wouldn't know it. Incredibly attentive and kind. We really appreciated his service enhancing the experience all together. My husband's coworker recommended this place. I saw the reviews on Yelp and assumed it would be just so-so. It was surprisingly good! My favorite dishes were: 1. Uni Bowl. The uni is sweet and melts in your mouth. The seaweed rice is so flavorful. We both loved this dish so much and ended up getting two bowls. It's a dish you need to pay extra for. I want ten of it if we don't need to care about the price. 2. Foie Gras. I love the crispy rice under the foie gras. I never saw or tried this food pairing before and I was impressed. 3. Potato Bread. It's a side dish of the Wagyu beef. It's so chewy and tastes like mochi or rice cake. I can see myself snacking on it if I can get a bag of it. Absolutely love this place and am dying to go again. Perfect place for a date night and it is a bit fancy, it's nice to dress up a little! I went here and got the prefixe and it was sooo good. I really enjoyed the different meat dishes they offered as a main. I ordered the duck and it was fatty and super crispy. All the ingredients were splendidly paired with each other. My partner and I particularly loved the sorbet dessert and it was so refreshing with a nice crunchy texture. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to come here and I recommend this place to anyone who is willing to try a Korean fusion restaurant. Soogil's Restaurant Week menu sounded so fantastic that it became my most anticipated visit of the winter season. The question: Would it live up to my expectations? The answer: It absolutely did. Let's start with the appetizers. We got the beef tartare and sprang for the uni ($5 supplement). The beef tartare was great, wonderfully marinated with a refreshing crunch from the Korean pear and pickled chayote. It loosely reminded me of poke. The uni itself had that perfectly creamy, lightly sweet flavor that I was hoping for. The spinach flan was okay, but the cauliflower was very buttery. Too buttery. We both couldn't resist getting the scallops, and while the dish only came with three, they were perfectly seared and tender. The Korean chili paste crust on top, which I thought was actually flavored bread crumbs, added great flavor to the scallops. The sauce was addicting and I found myself trying to swirl up every last bit. The pickled sunchoke slivers were a bit too tart, but they weren't a big detractor. We tried both of the desserts. The Jenga Tower with sesame gelato was a great combination. The pastry sticks (or as I call them, "chewy Asian churros") were really fresh and tasty. They went perfectly with the cool, nutty black sesame gelato. The chestnut panna cotta was the real winner though. I loved the layers of panna cotta, and the actual bits of soft, sweet chestnut in the bottom layer. The kumquat sliver on top was juicy and sweet, and the rice cracker puffs added a nice crunch and slightly savory element to the dessert. I'm a little disappointed that I wasn't actually full by the end of this meal, but the flavors and execution were so good that I didn't mind all that much. read more

Food in general was good but my cocktail arrived with a fly in it. I sent it back and it was remade. Server said they were in a "war" with the fruit flies. The server told me they would void the charge for the cocktail. The remade cocktail had a fly frozen in the ice and they remade it a second time and sent an amuse bouche to apologize. An absolute must-try chef's tasting menu! Every course pleasantly surprised me with its innovative take on Korean classics. My favorite was the sun choke coup, though it's hard to pick one stand out. For dessert, I preferred the jenga tower over the foie gras + dalgona, but that's because I'm not a huge foie gras fan and the mousse with the sweet jelly and ice cream was a bit bizarre for me. I opted out of the additional course and was quite full by the end. The staff was also so friendly and accommodating -- when I jokingly said my cocktail wasn't strong enough, he offered to add more soju to it -- and the restaurant is really quaint and peaceful. Soogil offers a good value set menu for dinner. I went with two friends and we celebrated a birthday. They were very kind in writing happy birthday and having a candle on the plate :) they were also able to make substitutes for my pescatarian friend and a mock tail for me. I thought the presentation of all the dishes were beautiful and my favorite was the caviar tuna that came out first. We didn't do any of the add ons and were quite full. We did the chef's tasting menu ($68) and I couldn't recommend it more highly. I wanted to try so many different dishes, and I think the tasting menu is the way to go if you want to get a flavor of everything Soogil has to offer. My favorites were the sweet potato beignet and the nurungji gras. Both dishes were packed with flavor and really stood out to me. The desserts were not bad but they also weren't my favorite - the jenga-tower was fun to play with though. I also loved my French105 cocktail. If you're into elderflower, this is the one for you. Every dish was solid - and I think that's really tough to do with a tasting menu, yet alone a Korean tasting menu. I also thought the portions were pretty big, and the tasting menu was well worth the price. We were completely stuffed afterwards. Soogil has a beautiful, open space - a perfect place for a date or a catch up dinner with friends. Overall, great food, great atmosphere, great service. Highly recommended! Portions were so so so tiny and wait was extremely long. We definitely not enjoyed the place. Food was very average. It might have crazy name and description but taste was not as good. Too much hype not much substance. Dessert was the only decent dish. Because it is hard to screw up ice cream. We spent 4 hours in the restaurant. I really wanted to leave. I'm a few months late on this review - I went back in July 2021 - so the tasting menu is a bit different now. Nonetheless, Soogil was an incredible and DELICIOUS experience. The dishes were so creative, fresh, flavorful, and every one of them melted in my mouth. The timing of the tasting menu was a tiny bit rushed - I personally was way too full by the second to last dish (the kind of full that results when you eat too fast). I could barely make room for dessert, which is unheard of for me. Speaking of dessert, the jenga tower was probably my least favorite dish, but I'm guessing that's because I'm not huge on black sesame flavored things and because I was about to keel over and perish from how full I was. Soogil has become my favorite spot for a date night! They only have a tasting menu, but I love it because they specialize in a few dishes each time. Although, if you are a picky eater, I would check the menu since it changes every so often. Each dish was amazing - so flavorful and well thought out. Soogil offers a prix fixe chef's tasting menu highlighting modern Korean cuisine with French influences. Great food and great ambiance, worth a visit / good for date night! We came as two, so we were able to try all of their dishes! The highlights for me were the beef wellington (worth the supplement!) and the foie gras, which is their signature dish. Somewhere between 3 stars and 4 stars for me. Due to COVID, they are only doing chef's tasting for $85 each. The first two courses were pretty good, a creamy soup and scallops with a salad. I did not like the foie gras - it was too fatty for my taste and I couldn't finish the whole dish. The short rib was perhaps the best food item of the day. My favorite course of the night is the dessert - crispy churros with black sesame gelato. It was the best sesame-flavored ice cream I've ever had and it went very well with freshly fried churros. This one takes the entire meal from a 3 to a 4. Overall the food was good but a little underwhelming. Among all the creative Korean spots I've tried in NYC, I'd recommend Kochi and Atoboy for better food with the same price level, or Hortus as a more affordable option. read more

After months of hiding at home due to the pandemic, a couple of friends and I decided to splurge and order the Soogil 2020 Christmas Tasting Menu for a nice Christmas Eve dinner at home. Everything was packed safely, and for the most part, survived a speeding car ride home to be plated and enjoyed. Amuse-bouche: Grilled Octopus with Caponata, feta cheese - a delightful start to the meal, the chopped mushrooms went very well with the octopus Sweet potato puff pastry with duck prosciutto - we all enjoyed popping this gem into our mouths, and it was a great harbinger of the delightful dinner we would be enjoying Mushroom Veloute with crispy maitake mushrooms - We couldn't pour the soup out into other dishes without shifting the crispy mushrooms and "drowning them". My only suggestion would be to leave the crispy mushrooms separate when packing so the soup could be poured out, and then topped with the mushrooms. While it made for the ugliest photo, don't sleep on this dish, the veloute is umami velvet, a mushroom silk party in your mouth. Kampachi with Korean radish, napa cabbage, finger lime, soy yuzu sauce - this was a refreshing break in between the veloute and foie gras, and well executed, if overshadowed by the richer dishes, but definitely necessary to give our tongues a break from the heaviness of the other dishes Foie-Gras: Hudson Valley Farm foie gras, brussels sprouts, poached peach, pickled beech mushroom - this was the only dish we initially heated based on the instructions, and nearly ruined by overheating. Luckily, we only made the mistake on one, and the rest were salvaged. The crispy rice and brussels sprouts were absolutely necessary to counter the fattiness of the foie. The tart pickled mushroom and sweetness of the poached peach brought out the richness of the foie gras and made this dish exceptional Turbot with leek veloute, pickled mussels, gochujang crust - where to start, the turbot was still warm and flaky, and the contrast between the briny mussels pickled brought out the rich creaminess of the leek veloute, and butteriness of the turbot. The gochujang crust brought out another level of tart flavor, and we all greatly enjoyed this. I may or may not have used my finger to finish off the remaining leek veloute in a most unladylike fashion (the benefits of eating at home) Beef Wellington with spinach flan, we received one "loaf" to slice up amongst us, and given how full we felt after the rest of the dishes, we decided to only serve half for the dinner. The only thing we unanimously did not love was were the spinach flan cubes, it was a little bit bland, and was overshadowed by the rich flavors of the other dishes Uni Bowl (supplement): Matsutake mushroom, seaweed rice, pickled chayote, smoked trout roe, kamtae (wild seaweed), pinenut - do.not.skip.this - this was a creamy dream in the bowl, and too pretty for us to try to re-plate, especially since it was wrapped in the most delicate wild seaweed, too fragile to shift. This was the unanimous favorite savory dish Dark Chocolate Panna Cotta with black truffle - despite our initial trepidation that we would not be full, we weren't able to finish this rich decadent delight that came in re-usable glass jars. I finished mine the next day, and regretted that I couldn't order these in six packs to stash in the fridge We all loved the food, though we would probably adjust the recommended heating instructions next time, and are looking forward to enjoying the food in person one day. read more

I can't stop dreaming about the meal I had here at Soogil the other night. The space is intimate and cozy, perfect for a date night. My boyfriend and I were seated in the corner of the restaurant. We arrived at 5:30pm and only one other party was there. Sean, our server, was very nice and attentive. He also had a humorous kick to him which made our night entertaining. The food was SO SOOO good. I loved it so much I'm thinking of bringing my parents from Hong Kong there when they visit. 1) Caviar + Tuna Very generous with the Caviar portion. A great first course to start off the tasting menu. It was light and inviting. This didn't particularly stand out but it was good. I thought this was a solid 7.5/10 2) Octopus Octopus was very tender, cooked very very well. It was paired with Eggplant which made the dish pack a lot of flavour. Korean ingredients was more prominent here! Would give this a 8/10 3) Scallop I'm literally salivating as I type. This scallop had a gochujang crust and it was perfect in every way. Definitely a 9.5/10 4) Nurungji Foie Gras THIS. was a work of art. It was Foie Gras topped over crispy rice. Basically a twist on the traditional Bibimbap. I was floored at how huge the Foie Gras was. I haven't had Foie Gras in a while and this was such a treat to have it in the most tender, buttery soft, melt in your mouth way. There was also a mushroom soy sauce that paired perfectly. I thought this itself was worth $135 the tasting menu was 10/10 5) We had the additional Uni Bowl + Caviar (for an additional $51) I thought this was really fresh and again, was very happy with how generous they were with the uni portion. The way the seaweed is incorporated in this was very unique. I thought this was good, but if I go back to the restaurant again, I would skip this just because of the price tag:value ratio. I frequently have Uni in NYC, didn't think it was suuuuper mindblowing to be spending an additional $51 5/10 (with price considered) 7/10 (without price considered) 6) Wagyu This comes in 2 parts. The potato bread and then the Wagyu. I am DREAMING about the Potato bread. Legit asked all my friends how to make it. The wagyu was very tender, but it was on the saltier side 8/10 + Beef Wellington (boyfriend's choice) My boyfriend had the Beef Wellington and it was HUGE. Honestly we were surprised at how filling this tasting menu was (and we were definitely not mad about it). I personally don't really like filo pastry and so it wouldn't be my choice for the course. But he really does and it was made perfectly 8/10 7) Mango Sorbet SO good! Really lucky that it was a Mango Sorbet because that's my favourite fruit. I loved the mascarpone and fruits that it paired with. It was a very smooth sorbet. I would recommend this over the other dessert 8.5/10 + Jenga Tower (boyfriend's choice) This was VERY filling. Because Black Sesame is a bit heavy especially paired with the chewy corn sticks. Debated posting because this is from Valentine's Day, so it might have been a one-off, but I think about this experience and still get angry. First things first- the food is good. Some dishes were even great, and you can tell from the photos. But the service? Probably the worst, and I really like to think I'm lenient. I came 5 minutes early to my reservation and they made me feel like I was hours early. I had to wait outside for 30 minutes in the winter time. We were seated and the first course came out promptly, but after that we waited at least 30 minutes between each course. After the 2nd course, we were waiting for so long that one of the younger staff members offered us complimentary champagne which was nice... BUT one of the head waiters (or so it seemed) who sat us down and explained the menu in the beginning FORGOT about us and REINTRODUCED himself to us after the 3rd course.... My boyfriend and I had to remind him that we were waiting for our 4th course... We asked him when our course would be coming and he said he would check on it right away. After that, whenever he brought in a new course he said "is that fast enough" in an extremely condescending way. Even when we left, he mentioned how we came too early and made it seem like it was our fault. So condescending and rude, especially for a $4-500 dinner. Cute little spot with nice ambiance but surprisingly empty on a Tuesday evening, especially after all the raving reviews lately. Majority of the food I tasted was really great and flavorful, but sadly the portions were all too small. I really do think these would all be enjoyed more as larger portions, but shareable. Plates CAN be filling AND elegant/sophisticated/high end at the same time :) Here's what we had to share between the two of us: Tofu Salad $11 (aster green, yu choy, organic tofu, soy bean paste) Super refreshing and a great start to the meal. Love how the tofu was crumbled with all the vegetables mixed in, you really get a crunch with each bite. I found myself looking for the pieces of soy bean from the paste... yummy burst of savory goodness! Nurungji Gras $23 (sautéed foie gras, crispy rice, spinach, ramp oyster mushrooms, organic hon shimeji pickles) Yum! This was like a super mini dolsot bibimbap with a super generous piece of foie gras on top. They pour the mushroom sauce on the hot plate after it arrives at your table producing a super nice sizzle and flavor. Love the crispy rice formed on the bottom. Grilled Fresh Eel $20 (grilled fresh eel with perilla leaves salad, Asian chive, ssamjang, fresh ginger, soy sauce vinaigrette) I think the eel (4 small pieces) could have either been less cooked so it's more tender, or more grilled to get that nice char and a bit of crunch. Sadly it was just in the middle. It was nice to have two dollops of the ssamjang sauce but I feel like the chives needed a bit more sauce on there to make it less dry. Jenga Tower $13 (seven grain powder with honey chestnut gelato) Such cute plating! Sadly you can't really play jenga with this haha but it's delicious! They are essentially mini funnel cake sticks, so enjoy them while they are still warm! Chestnut gelato was a perfect combo. Passion Fruit Tart $12 (passion fruit curd, basil infused champagne mango) This was such a good choice to cut down all the fattyness we ate from the jenga tower. The curd and fresh mango on top were just the right amount of tart. The tart shell was also light :). If you are really hungry and not in the mood to splurge, this is not the spot for you! These plates are all really small and are priced high considering the size. I've read in some reviews that for large groups they have prefixe for $50... maybe that's the way to go to try out more dishes here at a reasonable price! read more

The new modern Korean spot from Chef Soogil, formerly of Daniel and Hanjan, is as excellent as you would expect a place to be with a chef of that pedigree. Chef Soogil serves a small menu separated into "Garden", which are all of the smaller appetizers, and "Land" and "Sea", which consist of the larger entrees. We tried the entire Garden section, which was all incredible. It's hard to pick among the Brussels Sprouts ($10), Sweet Potato ($9), Mung-Bean Korean Pancake ($11) and Glass Noodles ($11), so I would recommend getting them all and one or two of the larger plates, which makes for a normal-sized, very satisfying meal for two. If I had to pick though, the Korean Pancake and the Brussels Sprouts with Tofu are probably the top two. For the mains, we tried the beautifully-plated Spanish Mackerel ($12), which comes with three really delicious salty pieces of Mackerel on top of swiss chard-wrapped rice; and the Short Rib ($26), a huge hunk of super tender fall off the bone beef served with vegetables, kimchi and rice. Both entrees were definite winners and highly recommended. Lastly, we tried both desserts too: the Korean-Style Rice Stick with Vanilla Ice Cream ($9) and the Passion Fruit Tart ($10). They were both very different and very good, so again, just get both! It's a small and dimly lit intimate restaurant, but still casual. There are small tables along the side that you should definitely try to snag with a reservation, as well as a communal table in the middle. Very delicious tasting menu! Every dish was delicate but packed a punch with the flavor. My least favorite dish would have had to be the foie gras and dalgona dessert. I love foie gras in all forms but this was something out of my wheelhouse and didn't hit the mark for me. Delicious, simple menu with a dim, romantic ambiance and amazing service. Be prepared for a tapa style meal that might break your bank a bit if you're a broke college student like me. Between 2 of us, we ordered 5 dishes that ended up filling us by the end of the meal. Glass Noodles (5/5): definitely one of my favorites. Served warm with bulgogi that's perfectly crispy on the edges. The noodles were the perfect texture of smooth and chewy. Mungbean Pancake (4/5): not your typical Korean pancake. Served with shredded kimchi, really complemented the salty pork flavor in the pancake. Really reminded me of Chinese style meat pancakes!! Spicy Soft Tofu (5/5): such delicious spicy broth!!! The tofu flan is so melt in your mouth! Seafood was so-:so. Chicken (3/5): imo, not the best flavor despite being one of the pricier "Land" dishes. I wish there was more emphasis on the sweet potato purée on the bottom because that was truly the star despite not being a lot. Pork Belly (4/5): docked one star because portions were truly so small. Creative take with the "kimchi roll" and I enjoyed the crispness of the pork belly as well. Exceptional service!! Our waiter was both attentive and sweet. Our last 2 dishes came out a slower than I wanted them to. I also enjoyed that they had a whole section dedicated to mocktails and even a non-alcoholic pinot noir ..not sure if they do serve any alcohol but from the looks of it, maybe not! Overall, not sure if I'll return because it was pricy given the quantity of food but the experience was well worth. read more

Came here for restaurant week and really enjoyed the food here! I started off with the watermelon soju drink which was a must get! Super refreshing and not extremely strong- perfect for a summer night. Then I got the beef tartare which was yummy. I wish the beef was in smaller chunks but that's ok. Then I got the braised ribs and it was DELICIOUS! Very soft and tender and the sauce was perfect and a little sweet! Dessert was the passion fruit tart, which was ok. The outer crust was quite thick but the creme inside was yummy! Unfortunately the service was a little slower than expected but it's a cute dinner spot! read more

Excellent food. Truly unique flavor and impressive! Foie gras nurungji is just too delicious. Best mix of French and Korean food indeed. Must visit for Korean food lovers. read more
