Our chips were an assortment of very small pieces with the largest chip being no more than 3cm in length. Extremely disappointing and inedible!! Terrible - was super quick and they were nice and friendly; had good reviews so decided to give it a go... the chips taste "fake"??? Super weird the actual worst chips I have ever had in my life.... like they don't taste like potato - they were "pre cooked" and then heated. The fish wasn't fresh; the prawns over cooked. Yes, yes, yes, TRY IT. I have, in fact, waited in line for 45 minutes for fish and chips from this shop. Okay, I lie, I sat on the beach while my mother and aunt waited in line. Yes, I'm a horrible daughter. But it was worth the wait! I am a F&C connoisseur, and there's nothing I like more than an average-looking little fish and chippery that churns out fantastic grub. Always so busy that there is a line out the door and down the street, this fish and chip shop is worth the wait. The chips are delicious. That is what makes this place. Soto's has delicious fish and chips and are reasonably priced for the location. Located 2 min walk from the beach it's a perfect place to get dinner and eat on the beach. The shop is very small and has been extremely busy every time I've been there, meaning it's a bit of a struggle getting in and out with the large crowd. read more

Part of its charm is old-school shops like Soto's, which has been on Semaphore Rd just as long as I can remember (and I grew up in Semaphore). It's not fancy, it's not gourmet, it's not fashionable. In fact it's a bit daggy. But it has heaps good fish and chips. Which, let's face it, is ESSENTIAL for a day at the beach. They're not too oily, the chips are really good, and the fish isn't too heavily battered. Grab yourself some takeaway at Soto's, a Corona, and head down to the beach to watch the sun set. I love the fish from here, and the chips aren't too bad either. As others have said, the fish is lightly battered, which means it stays nice and crispy. Hands down the best fish and chips in Adelaide is from Soto's. This is coming from someone who rarely eats take away, and usually wouldn't opt for the idea of greasy fish and greasy chips. The fish is lightly battered and very filling, but not heavy. One piece is more than enough for a meal, especially if you're planning on having chips, and why wouldn't you? Who has fish without the chips? These chips are not the frozen potatoes that you'd buy from the freezer section at the supermaket, these are hand cut fresh potatoes. Yummy! Was not that great. For a very popular place it sure was disappointing. Yes the chips were fresh but there was no sign at the door stating they did not do eftpos. So after having to squeeze our way through to the check out just to find out that we has to walk 10 mins to the nearest atm. read more

When in Semaphore I'll go down to visit this place. The chips are certainly pretty amazing, though "off season" potatoes can make for a chip not as crispy as one would like. Still, can't complain as at least they still have flavour to them, unlike some other places. I'm told the fish there is pretty good, too, by the way. I don't eat fish but with the yummy sounding noises I hear from whoever is with me who has the fish, it's pretty obvious it's something good. My only fault with this place is when you get potato fritters you need to either bring some paper towels or use the paper its wrapped in to get rid of the excess oil. It's fairly dripping in the stuff sometimes. read more
