I had a wonderful brunch at South Bar & Grill in Pompano this past Sunday with four friends. Making an 11:00 a.m. reservation online was quick and easy. We chose to sit inside because of the heat, although the outdoor seating area looked beautiful as well. When we arrived, the restaurant was still pretty quiet, and we were seated right away. For brunch, they offer either a $49 brunch package with a wide variety of items or an à la carte menu. Our server let us know that everyone at the table has to choose the same brunch option, so we all went with à la carte. I ordered the sweet potato waffles, and they were absolutely delicious! One of my friends had the poached eggs with fried green tomatoes, and my other two friends ordered the egg sandwiches with hash browns. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. The service was excellent. Our waitress was attentive, friendly, and checked on us throughout our meal. The décor is beautiful, with dark green tones that create a stylish, inviting atmosphere. The only thing that felt a little unusual was someone coming around taking photos of diners and then offering them for purchase, but we simply declined. I recently visited South Bar & Kitchen for their Old School Saturday Supper event, and while the atmosphere had its highlights, the overall dining experience left me wanting more. The restaurant is located in Pompano Beach with both street parking and several nearby parking lots, which made parking fairly easy. That said, the surrounding area felt a little sketchy, and as a woman, I personally wouldn't feel comfortable walking around alone at night. The restaurant itself is cute, casual, and inviting, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The event was held outside, where DJs kept the crowd entertained with a great mix of hip-hop, R&B, and old-school classics. The music was definitely one of the highlights of the night. Because the humidity was unbearable, even after the sun went down, I chose to sit inside for dinner before heading out to enjoy the event. Unfortunately, the service wasn't great. I understand they were likely busier than usual because of the event, but our waiter wasn't very attentive. He told us to flag him down if we needed anything, which isn't exactly what you expect when dining out. Our drinks took about 20 minutes to arrive, and although we were told the bar was backed up, they ended up tasting mostly like juice with very little alcohol. For appetizers, we ordered the crab beignets. They were just okay, but the mustard dipping sauce was actually really delicious and probably my favorite part of the dish. My friend ordered the fried chicken sandwich, and I had the shrimp Caesar salad. The salad came with much more dressing than I prefer, making it a bit overwhelming. My friend thought her sandwich was decent, but unfortunately it didn't sit well with her stomach the following day. After dinner, we headed outside to enjoy the party. The outdoor deck is built around a beautiful tree and offers plenty of seating, along with a separate outdoor bar, which created a fun atmosphere. One thing that stood out, though, was how slippery the deck was. At first I thought it might have been my shoes, but after hearing several other people mention the same thing, it seemed like I wasn't the only one who noticed. Overall, the entertainment and outdoor atmosphere were enjoyable, but I wouldn't return for dinner. The menu is fairly limited, and with fewer options, I expected each dish to really stand out. Unfortunately, the food and service just didn't live up to those expectations. If you're looking for good music and a fun Saturday night vibe, the event is worth checking out, but I wouldn't go for the dining experience alone. read more

Went on Saturday for a brunch. Good music and good vibes overall. We decided to do their unlimited brunch for our first time since it's a great way to try so much! Our tops from the unlimited brunch - bacon egg and cheese (I wish I started with this!) - catfish bites (had to do two rounds was surprise how flavorful they were - has brown and biscuits were a good side. The pancakes were okay and the sausages you can tell they just made a bunch and have them in the back wasn't fresh. Can skip the deviled eggs didn't really taste like much and the only dish I dislike was the shrimp and grits definitely not my forte. Ou server was on top of things and check in frequently. Oh my gosh what good food! Biscuits, burger, ribs, so much! I loved their outdoor area with the gorgeous limbs reaching out over the expansive patio. Service was super slow and after we were given our food by a runner we didnt see our waiter again. After we waited maybe a half an hour after finishing our food we finally went to the bar to pay, which was weird because the restaurant was not full at all. Our waiter was inside at a booth with the hostess just gossiping. Not a good look for the restaurant. However, the food was astronomical and we will still be back for that! VERY GOOD! My friends and I decided to dine here during the Pompano Untapped event. It was pretty good. My friends had the fish bites, blue crab beignets and mac and cheese-they loved their choices. I didn't like my gumbo. The rice felt hard as if it wasn't cooked at all. I returned it to for blue crab beignets which were actually pretty good. Our server, Taylor, was very nice and polite. This review is based solely on my interaction with staff, as I didn't get the chance to try any food: I had been hearing great things about the Old School Brunch here, so I made a reservation through OpenTable a month in advance and was really looking forward to it. When I arrived, the place was packed with a great atmosphere and music. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill from there. When I checked in, the hostess had difficulty hearing me over the music and seemed visibly annoyed during the interaction. We were first seated at a very small table directly in a high-traffic walkway. I asked to be moved, and while she did relocate us, it was to a booth right next to the kitchen--another busy spot that wasn't ideal. After waiting a while, a server came by and I explained the situation. I noticed a few other open tables and booths, but was told they were reserved--even though I also had a reservation. At one point, I even asked about a table that had just been cleared, but was again told no for the same reason. Overall, I was disappointed not only by the lack of flexibility, but also by the dismissive and unaccommodating attitude from staff. The burger had some mento cheese on it for a signature touch. The ribs had pomegranate seeds and scallions in a little nut crumble. They were absolutely Divine and I will be going back for those. The baked potato also had some pimento cheese in it which was different and I don't know if I loved it but I definitely didn't hate it! The patio was beautiful and we went on such a nice temperature and clear day so it was perfect. The service is very southern as in they were very hospitable and at their pace. We're talking fresh watermelon to kick things off, then catfish bites (crispy, seasoned just right), and deviled eggs--which, okay, weren't my favorite, but everything else made up for it real quick. Now let's talk about those biscuits... BABY. Fresh baked, warm, with this glaze on top that just melts into them. Then they hit you with berry jam, hot honey, AND pecan butter?! South Kitchen & Bar is truly one of Pompano Beach's best hidden gems! If you love New Orleans cuisine with a delicious Caribbean flair, this is a must-visit. We enjoyed Sunday brunch on the beautiful outdoor patio with our little dog, and despite the Florida heat and humidity, we were perfectly comfortable beneath the shade of the magnificent tree. It created such a charming and relaxing atmosphere. The Unlimited Brunch absolutely lives up to the rave reviews. The value is incredible, and the food just keeps coming! Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, but our two favorites were the Gouda Shrimp & Grits and the Sweet Potato Waffle--both were pure decadence on a plate. We also loved the flaky biscuits, the sweet roll, the deviled eggs...and that's just the beginning. There were so many wonderful dishes to sample that every dish brought to the table was another delicious surprise. GO SOUTH! Actually we went north to Pompano Beach for lunch on a Thursday. We had heard that the weekends are packed especially Sunday brunch. When we arrived it was pleasantly chill. The lovely hostess guided us to a booth by a window. We were greeted by our equally lovely server Jazmin (sp?). Btw, she rocks! Upon perusing the lunch menu we jumped at the deviled eggs appetizer. These beauties were two beet stained eggs cut in half topped with a spicy yolk filling and garnished with scallions, chicken skin crunch and trout roe. OH MY! My dear friend and dining companion was leaning towards a salad but we put on our thinking caps and decided that the fried chicken entree, which was accompanied by two sides and a biscuit was the best bang for our taste buds. And indeed it was. She ordered two pieces with greens and mac + cheese while I chose three pieces (thinking ahead to lunch tomorrow) plus the mac chz plus sweet potato soufflé (that was Thanksgiving babe!). The chicken was fresh out of the fryer and we had nothing but praise for the sides. To top it off...Nanner Puddin'! Just like mom made but no Jello pudding here. Amazing. Since it was a weekday, we got to meet the chef and give kudos. (He's a happy dude) I wouldn't care to come here on the weekend when it's packed but I can see why folks do. MORE DEVILED EGGS PLEASE !!! Nestled in a newly gentrified area in Pompano Beach within an old warehouse type district. This corner eatery is open for lunch Tuesday - Friday, live music on the weekends with a weekday happy hour 4p - 7p drink specials and 50% off Hankerin' appetizers. The interior dining room boasted a white industrial ceiling with exposed ventilation shafts festively decorated with red and gold Christmas tinsel and garlands, complemented by brown wood flooring providing a sense of warmth. The outide patio gloated with a massive historically protected Banyan tree which was surely the focal point of this southern vibe restaurant. The tree provided natural shade for the surrounding seating. After manipulating several tables to support our large party, we finally found refuge under the Banyan tree which sheltered us from the blazing sun. The server, who doubled as the sole bartender, took our cocktail, beer and appetizer orders and was quick to return with our drinks. The deviled eggs were plated a few minutes later. The eggs were surprisingly dyed pink filled with cajun whipped yolks, green onion, smoked trout roe and chicken crisps - a masterpiece of edible art. I nibbled on a few, but the wife quickly devoured several deliberately staying away from her mouth as a safety precaution. Ordered an average size 6.5 ounce burger with candied bacon jam and roasted garlic mayo which made this juicy beef burst with flavor. There was a spacious cement courtyard next to the patio with a large multi-colored butterfly mural on the wall. The courtyard is partially covered with green astro turf accompanied by a Corn Hole game ready to play while waiting for your meal. The exterior patio and courtyard is surely kid friendly. Today, there were more kids then adults, running around climbing on benches, crawling under tables and screaming. Take my advice, if you are coming here for a relaxing lunch, DO NOT sit outside. The gender assigned bathroom was spotless and absolutely beautiful with gold faucets over the stainless steel trough style sink. At least during Saturday brunch, there was free street parking available. When I walked in, Faith the hostess was friendly in explaining their Saturday morning unlimited brunch menu. While drinks are extra, $54 for 2 hours is a great deal, and the menu selection is huge; you can even repeat courses. (For beverages, I just had a couple of strong cups of Americano coffee , passing on other drinks.) Once seated, Alyssa was my waitress. She was equally friendly and right on point with her recommendations. I started with their bacon jam sliders - fluffy rolls with a seasoned but slightly sweet sauce on yummy beef & fresh greens. Eating with my eyes, I then went for the brunch staple of chicken & waffles. As someone who used to live in Louisiana, I don't play around when it comes to Southern food. My taste buds have been baptized in Cajun seasoning -- so trust me when I say South Bar & Kitchen passed the vibe check. I ordered the shrimp po' boy, and let me tell you... it took me emotionally back to Louisiana. Crispy shrimp, legit flavor, no shortcuts. The Louisiana pasta was rich, comforting, and had me questioning why I ever left the South in the first place. Service? On point. Friendly, attentive, and didn't disappear once the food hit the table (always appreciated). And then there was a guy casually playing live saxophone like it was no big deal. Friday was a busy night in Old Town Pompano as their first Friday night of the month started up again with the outdoor band, vendors and food trucks. Although the food trucks were tempting my friends and I opted for indoor, seated dining. Hence, we chose South Bar & Kitchen which is huge and does have music and seating outdoors as well. Came here for dinner on a Sunday evening and was disappointed. I've came to South for their brunch and have enjoyed it but the dinner is really lacking. First off, before we ordered, we were told they were out of a few items (we came at 6:00pm and dinner started at 4:00pm). We ordered two kids grilled cheese meals, shrimp and grits and the chicken sliders. Let's start with the positives - my children enjoyed their grilled cheese sandwiches and fries. Now for the negatives - the chicken sliders appeared to have been reheated (maybe leftover from the morning brunch?) the chicken tasted old/tough & lacked taste and the biscuits were hard/overcooked/over reheated. Came here for Mother's Day with a reservation and got seated right away. I loved the aesthetic -- the green and gold decor was really pretty, and surprisingly it wasn't too packed for a Sunday around 4:45 PM. I also really liked how spacious the restaurant felt. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, plus a cute outdoor bar area with stools where you can eat and hang out, which gave the place a really nice vibe. The music was a great mix of R&B and oldies too. Now let's talk service... for me, service is everything, and unfortunately that's what made this experience disappointing. Our waitress, Haley, was pretty inattentive throughout the meal. We asked for extra Caesar dressing and never got it, and it was honestly hard to get a hold of her most of the time. Because of that alone, I'd probably think twice before coming back. As for the food -- it was hit or miss. We started with the wings as an appetizer. They were flavorful, but nothing memorable. I'd probably skip them next time and try something else. I ordered the crispy Cobb salad because it sounded amazing on the menu, but it was a letdown. It was mostly lettuce with barely any chicken, and I had to mix the whole salad myself. At a restaurant, I kind of expect a Cobb salad to come already tossed together. Also... no blue cheese available? Come on now lol. My boyfriend got the fried chicken with sweet potato fries and mac & cheese. I will say, everything came out HOT, so you can tell the food is made fresh. The mac & cheese didn't look impressive at first, but it tasted SO good. The sweet potato fries were delicious too. My sister ordered the lobster pasta, and honestly the portion size shocked me in the best way. They were generous with the lobster, which almost never happens, and she loved it. My daughter got the crispy chicken sandwich and said it was the best sandwich she's ever had, so that was definitely a win. Overall, the food itself wasn't bad at all -- my salad was just a flop. If the service had been better, this review probably would've been very different. Not sure if I'd come back, but maybe on a different day with a different server. read more

A family member suggested we try South Bar & Kitchen for our girls nite out. The outdoor seating looked great but due to the extreme heat all evening we opted for indoor seating. We had reservations and were seated immediately. The interior was open and modern and our server was quick to arrive. we ordered two appetizers to share, smoked ribs and wings. Both were delicious. I ordered a salad with farro, arugula, goat cheese and blueberries. It came with a peach vinaigrette dressing. Others ordered the Tuesday Chicken Sandwich Special $12 along w truffle fries and a Burrata salad with fried chicken. our food came out timely and all seemed to enjoy. My salad was tasty and i would order it again. Parking was easy in the lot accross the street and prices were fair. I had to come back and review this restaurant again for their happy hour. A group of friends and I sat the bar and had the BEST time. The happy hour drink specials are some of the best I've seen in a while. The bartenders add their own flare to how they craft the cocktails and were very friendly. We had the pimento cheese dip, hot honey chicken sliders, and the deviled eggs. All three were great options and we couldn't decide which one we loved more! If I could give 0 stars, I would. I always wanted to go to South and when I finally went, I was extremely disappointed. I went with my social club for a Galentine's brunch. Although the reservation for our large group was booked well in advance, it was pretty clear they were unprepared for our party when we got there. Some of us didn't get our food at all. Others got incomplete orders. And with all that, we were still expected to pay. A small portion of our group was offered a 20% discount but the damage had been done. Extremely disappointed especially with that being my first time going. And the fact that management didn't make an effort to try to rectify the situation was even more disappointing. I've always enjoyed the cocktails and the atmosphere at South -- both are still excellent and really make the place feel special. But the food just isn't keeping up. The menu has gotten noticeably smaller, and the quality has slipped. The Hot Honey Salmon had no seasoning at all, and the farro underneath wasn't even edible. The asparagus was good but only 5 small twigs were provided. It would be great to see the food return to the same level as the drinks and vibe, because the potential is there. Oh and the food was brought by a food runner with completely un kept hair who apron was dirty. I would recommend keeping those folk in the back of the house. read more

Drinks and food are amazing my go to is the cajun chicken pasta or the chicken sandwich. Everything is fresh hot and served with a do you need anything else. I'll always dine in because takeout needs some assistance and attention. My first order out was fine my second time it got funny gave me ranch with a Caesar salad and a chicken strip for my chicken sandwich. I had to send it back. They fixed it but it's the principal and it's very awkward. When picking up you have to walk through the whole restaurant and sit and wait after calling 30 minutes previously. First time at South Bar and wanted to try the unlimited brunch menu. Basically, its $54 per person and you'll be able to eat anything on the brunch menu. My objection was to try EVERYTHING on the brunch menu or atleast try to. Appetizers - The buttermilk biscuits were very soft, fresh and moist. Topped with butter and jam it melted in my mouth. When I read they had Pulled pork cornbread on the menu i wasnt a fan at first, however when I tasted that cornbread it changed my opinion. It was so delicious. One of the tastier items on the menu. It had a nice savory taste. The Hashbrowns were salty. Personally, I didn't really care for it as it tasted oily. The Deviled eggs were OK. I expected the eggs to be more flavorful for some reason. Now that brown sugar bacon..... DELICIOUS!!!! Round of applause. I couldn't rave more about how good it was. It was one of the select few on the appetizer menu that I would give 4 stars to. Turkey sausage was ok. The bacon jam slides were pretty good. It had a different taste, not in a bad way either. Definitely better than the chicken Sliders. The chicken sliders were just ok. Nothing spectacular. Berries and cream I did not like at all. It was just too sweet for my liking. If you like spicy food, the jalapeño macaroni and cheese is for you. Fresh watermelon was indeed fresh. Mains... I wasn't satisfied with the steak and eggs. The steak was salty. I ordered the eggs with cheese on top which made it better. Sweet Potato Pecan Waffles were scrumptious! I should have ordered this item first because after trying everything else I was too full to finish. The Waffle was just right and the whipped cream on top was so fluffy. Both combined were tasty. Shrimp & grits... grits were a no! I've never had rubbery grits and they lacked any type of seasoning. Desserts: The best items were the pecan brownie with vanilla ice cream and sticky buns. Overall... The restaurant itself is nice. The food could have been better. The shots were good. Paid $54 for unlimited food, and it was worth it. Most places, you order shrimp and grits and that's already around $30. Add two mimosas and you're already at $50--and that's just for one plate and a couple of drinks. Here, it's $54 for unlimited food. Think about that. This isn't like Piccadilly's or Golden Corral. You don't get up for anything. You tell them what you want, and they bring it to you. The food actually tastes good, too. Most places that mass-produce food, the flavor falls off. Not here. The taste and presentation are both on point. Biscuits, waffles, chicken and waffles, cornbread, shrimp and grits, crab cakes...the list goes on and on and on and on and on. We sat outside, and it was a nice, cool, breezy day. Inside is nice too, but you can't beat the outside scenery when it's breezy, especially in South Florida. All the waiters are nice, and the whole thing runs like an assembly line--smooth and quick, like a well-oiled machine. As soon as you finish a plate, someone takes it away and brings the next one.
