Review Highlights - South County Trailway

It's a flat paved trail that's shaded by trees and foliage so even in the middle of a hot humid day it feels cool and comfortable.

It's a 40 acre nature preserve that's easily walkable. After you first walk in there's an area with picnic benches and a house that has a cute bird garden in the back. The public areas are kept well and clean. Unfortunately, some people don't know how to pick up after themselves and ruin it. There are benches throughout the preserve. There are two former Hudson River estates located in here. They pretty much are in ruins. It looks eerie, yet inviting. They are working on these properties so they're all closed off. The best part of the preserve are the TONS of white tailed deer that roam throughout. They're not too scared of humans. They'll walk right in front of you without a care in the world. I found great joy in that. I was able to sit at one of the picnic tables and enjoy watching them graze on the grass. I don't get to do that in NYC! I also came across a groundhog while walking through the place. There are many layers here and steep slopes with stairs that lead down to other areas going towards a street, some housing and towards the river. The butterfly garden was nice, but I didn't see a butterfly during my visit. Lenoir Preserve is very quite with not too much people traffic so if you're looking for a nice place to relax, read a book or take a hike, it's perfect. They say no pets allowed, but there were quite a few people there walking their dogs.

The paths are very very poorly marked. They are old school - painted on the tree. But the marked trees are few and far between. You have to hunt to find the trees and even so they are missing. And the path is not obvious. We and others we happened upon along the way were off the trail a few times. And there is only one map at the start. So don't go here if you're not experienced. You will get lost in these woods. It's funny because we went to Rockleigh recently and the difference is like night and day. Those trails are all marked. Frequently. Such a shame.

Situated in the northern section of the Palisades Interstate Parkway just after exit 2 northbound, State Line Overlook is the highest point at an elevation of 532 feet, about half a mile south of the New Jersey-New York state line. This site offers astounding views of the Hudson River and Westchester County from Yonkers to Tarrytown at the Tappan Zee Bridge. The lookout itself is open year-round, from dawn to dusk. Metered parking is in effect at $2.50 per hour on weekends. One could pay at the destinated pay station or parking app. It offers birdwatchers plenty to look at; in particular, the fall months offer a chance to spot hawks and provide access to some of the best hiking, which is where my partner and I came on this beautiful Saturday afternoon. Following the North to Shore Trail, we hiked for about a mile north before ending at the New York border with the NJ boundary stone marker. On our return heading back to the parking lot, we followed trail E, ending up on Old Route 9W. This truly offers an escape from the hectic city life as one hears birds chirping, which we can recommend.

Additionally, it's kept more private, but not there's not tons of eateries so you have to bring your own food, but the bathrooms are amazing. Kept beautifully clean with changing rooms galore. It's an easy walk to the beach plenty of parking outside and people do go to the park outside, so it's wonderful there as well. Life preserves are given freely to those who cannot swim and encouraged, which is totally a plus as well. We sat there on the beach, waiting for the tide to come in. Had our food played some games with their hours and everyone was pleasant and nice too that came around. I actually would like to do this next year. I'm sorry I found out about this place this year at the end of the summer.

Lovely visit to Glen Island Park…read more While this park is restricted to Westchester residents only...there were no attendants when I visited on a late Friday morning in November. This restriction may be during the peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day) but I am not sure. Lots of parking in large main lot. Again, I believe there is a fee for parking but that may be effective during the peak season only. Lots of space throughout the park. Some tabled, grilling and gazebo areas throughout...some of which require reservations for. Lots of paths with great views of the Long Island Sound and the marina.
