I couldn't taste the fish in these overwhelming flavors, so can't say if they were fresh or not. Maybe that was the point??? I came here with a friend last week. I've been meaning to try this place out for a while since I live across the street from it. I don't think there has ever been a successful restaurant on this block for a really long time. Other than George's of course. But its predecessor and the stores on the same block have straight up STRUGGLED for so long. There used to be a pho place, a Chinese restaurant, a toy store, etc. Therefore, I'm happy that this place is getting some recognition and breathing some well deserved LIFE into Bridgeport. It's always so stodgy and rigid. I've lived here all my life and although this probably wouldn't be my first place for Japanese food, I would definitely go here for something casual. The decor is very nice. It is a nice upgrade from the stereotypical Chinese restaurant with white walls and Chinese lettering on the wall. Instead, there are leather seats and attention to detail. The service was friendly. They didn't have shot glasses, so they gave us tea cups instead. We ordered the Fallen Angel and the Yakuza. I enjoyed both. I was surprised by the Fallen Angel because I've never seen a restaurant create a roll with seaweed inside. Some things to point out, they need to work on maintaining a professional and courteous environment. They were speaking Mandarin from across the restaurant. Also, their AYCE sushi is a bit overpriced. I'd rather go to Wasabi Cafe since it's cheaper. Plus, why don't they have in-house menus? Why are we ordering from the same menu as the menus they put on people's doors? Now this is me being nit picky, but I don't like their plates. The plates they use are found in other Chinese restaurants like Chi Cafe and others in Chinatown. I've lived in Bridgeport all of my life and I'm Chinese, I recognize plates. I would recommend that they keep things simple and use white plates to let the colors of the food stand out, rather than having sushi that is wrapped in a dark green seaweed, sit on a green plate. Decided to take a chance on this local sushi place that just opened a month ago, and I'm glad I did. The service is outstanding and the owner Leo was incredibly helpful in making a few selections for a customized party platter I was getting for my wife's birthday. My favorite roll? The Fallen Angel - spicy crab meat w/seaweed salad, crunch, and avocado topped with seared scallops and tobiko. Tell me that doesn't sound delicious. All my party guests thoroughly enjoyed all the rolls, and loved the quality (TASTY!) Loved that the sushi wasn't loaded with rice like other places. So I am very big on customer service, like super big. And I believe that you take care of your customers, be good to your customers, and they will be good to you and keep coming back. Well I have no intentions on coming back to South Kawa, I wouldn't even recommend it. My food was pretty average for sushi, but very pretty with great presentation. We were rushed to order and told the kitchen closed at 10:45. My friend and I each ordered sushi, ramen, and an appetizer. I asked if I could try something else because the seafood in the seafood ramen didn't taste fresh. I was told I couldn't order anything else at 10:30 and given a carry out box. I mentioned again that I wanted to return the ramen because it didn't taste good at all. My server argued with me and told me i had to pay for it. Their takeout delivery is good. When you live in Bridgeport fresh sushi places are hard to come by so this is the only place to get some good Japanese food. We ordered $50 worth of sushi combos and they were not bad. We had a spicy tuna, salmon, and Kamikaze was okay it all blended together with the spicy flavors so it was hard for me to tell which was better from the other rolls. Their salmon and tuna nigiri was fresh and delicious. I like how their combos come with miso soup and salad. They aren't cheap because they don't have to be what Japanese restaurant ever is right? Fair price for some sushi in an area that doesn't really have sushi, Bridgeport life. If you buy green tea they give free refills and it tastes really good especially if you are freezing outside it helps warming up. Dined here for lunch. I wanted to start by saying my experience was pretty average. I think having dinner at a sushi restaurant is a much better indication of it's ability and quality than lunch is. Despite the average experience I was satisfied enough that I would be willing to come back to try the dinner menu another time. Checked in on Yelp for free edamame which was enough to feed two. Got the lunch deal, which is a pretty good deal: 3 rolls for $9. Came with Miso soup which was tasty. I got the shrimp and avocado roll, white tuna crunch roll and spicy crab. The shrimp roll was the only one I didn't like, although the avocado portions in it were generous. Good rice to stuffing ratio for each roll. The other rolls were good but average. My boyfriend and I found this place on yelp, and we've been hooked ever since! Amazing prices, and even better sushi. I'm the type of Sushi lover that always gets the same thing when I go out, a dragon roll or anything with unagi on it. And there's is so bomb!!! It's so good that I've actually started tasting random rolls on the menu and every time my tastebuds are exploding with flavor and I'm beyond satisfied. Bridgeport. All-you-can-eat sushi. 'Nuff said. 5 stars. Go there. Oh, you want an actual review as well? Okay, I'll oblige. I'd heard a rumor that there was a sushi place opening in Bridgeport. I am initially skeptical (because as much as I love my B-port digs, I've been burned in the past by 'southside sushi'). This rumor then became that there was a sushi place opening in Bridgeport with a Buffet option. I am officially intrigued enough to investigate. I looked into it further. Definitely sushi. Definitely Bridgeport. Definitely not yet Buffet-available. Everyone talking about great sushi (still skeptical), but constant delay of the Buffet option. I place a phone call and find out through some very broken English that the buffet will be open on Tuesday. Others have claimed the same piece of news many Tuesdays prior, but I have faith. I called that following Wednesday. The Sushi Buffet is alive, and it costs $24.88. A price well-worth investing if the legends are true. That following Saturday, we make the quick trip over and at about 5pm, we're pretty much the only ones there. Not a good sign. But it does mean excellent service. Ah, a classic sheet of paper to check off the things we want. "Let's take 'em to school," I fictitiously stated to my girlfriend Char O. as I picked up the pen. Miso Soup - Good. Hard to ruin miso soup, and they didn't. Rock Shrimp Tempura (with creamy spicy aioli) - Holy appetizers, Batman!! This came as about a dozen fried jewels coated with a ziggy-zaggy drizzle of reddish aioli sauce. Lovely amount of spice, perfectly-cooked shrimpies; ecstasy on a plate. Snow Shrimp Tempura (with special coconut cream sauce) - What the hell - it gets even BETTER than those other shrimp??? If the rock shrimp are ecstasy on a plate, then these represent Food Nirvana. I recall noting that if I were given the option to eat one food item all day, every day - these would likely be near the (if not THE) top of the list. We ordered them both, Rounds 1 AND 2. The spicy yang of the rock shrimp. The cooling yin of the snow shrimp. It's just... PERFECTION. Oh, and there's sushi here, too??? For nigiri, I didn't see eel, but I did see Tamago (disguised as "egg omelet") and Maguro (tuna). Both pieces were HUGE. And not overloaded with rice, either. Good tamago, and the maguro was quite tasty as well. I can't tell what "good quality" is, but it tasted good to me and that's all I care about. Then come the rolls. Now their AYCE menu doesn't include many of the "Special Rolls", but it did include some and we tried the Dynamite, the Volcano, and the Yakuza. [Insert "sleeping with the fishes" joke here, because I know I did at the restaurant (much to Char O.'s dismay).] We also wound up trying their Spider roll, Dragon, Philadelphia, and the like. I have to note: they have an Eel Avocado roll. One of the best combinations of things I love in a roll, with no filler cucumber or carrot crap. Just two delicious items wrapped up in a bit of rice and some nori. Yes, please. Keep 'em coming. Oh, Round 3? Char O.'s too full? Nah, I'm gonna get more miso soup and ANOTHER ORDER OF THOSE SNOW SHRIMP! We're going to go back. There will be shrimps a-poppin'. I think we ate about $28 apiece on those shrimp (the a la carte menu features those shrimp appetizers at $9/$10, but not sure how many more you get a la carte) - let alone digging in on the sushi. Other pros: - It wasn't very crowded, so service was fast (good refilling of water) and food came out pretty quick. - The music selection (when we could hear it over the TV) wasn't bad. - Rock shrimp / Snow shrimp. - Washroom was pretty spiffy (although the lighted mirror was creepy and the men's room was painted Mango) Some negatives: - They asked us to share one order card. That meant having to pay attention when they brought stuff out to figure out who had which rolls. - When bringing out rolls, they rushed and didn't speak too loudly/clearly, though we did eventually figure it out on our own. - It was dark. Creepy-levels of dark. But I could still see my shrimp, so it's okay. - I fear that if we came here during a crowded time, the service would not have been so great. There was not a huge staff on-site that we saw. I really do feel bad when a sushi place's non-sushi items overtake the sushi items in noteworthiness, but I feel good that the sushi was still damned excellent and that just means those appetizers were THAT MUCH BETTER than "damned excellent". Oh, and they're in Bridgeport! Seriously! And all-you-can-eat!! Go there. NOW. You won't be disappointed. After enjoying some take out from Kawa a few nights prior, a friend of mind wanted to check out what the fuss was about. I too, wanted to see if my dining-in experience would live up the take-out I had. I had been to this location once before when it was Noodles-Pho-You. Now under new ownership and name this gem may be my new Bridgeport go to. My friend and I rolled up to Kawa about 3:45 today and were surprised to see that the open sign was not on. After investigating the menu in the window, we realized they take an hour break between lunch and dinner service (3-4). This would normally be no big deal, but my friend had to work down the street at 4:30. We decided to wait it out and hopefully get some quick sushi in. No more than five minutes later the owner strolls up to the door keys in hand and says, "do you guys want to come in?" We replied excitedly in the affirmative and enter into the restaurant. The owner, Kwok, showed us to a table. I felt kinda bad because the staff was in the dinning hall resting during their break which we had cut about 10 mins short. I was impressed in how quickly they all got up and began to prepare for us and the rest of the dinner service to come. Our server quickly came to take our drink and appetizer orders. Our food was served quickly and they were very understanding of our time constraint. Right away Kawa passes my number one indicator of a solid Japanese restaurant, their edamame was amazing! Steamed and salted to perfection. Wow, I'm an addict for this stuff. Vegetable and prawn tempura was fried nice and crispy and the vegatables were both varried (sweet potatoes, bell peppers, broccoli) and fresh. For sushi we had the Volcano Roll (my pick) and Spicy Spider roll. Both were excellently crafted, fresh, and all to easy to whoof down in a hurry. A sushi joint... in Bridgeport? It's true, & worth a visit; especially if you live in the neighborhood. I just tried South Kawa out last night after seeing it pop open a few weeks ago. I was wary... I did not expect a sushi spot to open up on South Halsted. However, I was hoping that South Kawa would add a little more diversity to our neighborhood dining selection, & it has. I was greeted & seated immediately upon entering by a friendly staff person. I was very happy to see how nicely South Kawa refurbished the former establishment that haunted this store-front space; it has a nice feel, decor, & an open kitchen/sushi bar area. I stopped in for a "light" meal last night, & ordered two rolls - their special Fallen Angel roll & a California roll (sans avocado!) The rolls were huge! Tasty, generous cuts of fresh fish, no over-doing it on the sauce or rice, & the coup de grace being... they did not mistakenly put any avocado in my sushi. Hooray! No allergic reaction = extra points, South Kawa! I took a menu home with me & noticed that South Kawa has lunch specials... & South Kawa is just a few blocks walk from my apartment. Houston, we have a problem. Or should I say, Bridgeport, we have a problem. I might just satisfy my sushi cravings with ease & carry out more often that I realistically should. I enjoyed my first visit, & I look forward to visiting again. It is nice that there is a sushi place of decent quality in Bridgeport now, & I hope you will join me in giving this spot a try. P.S. Apologies for not updating since my last review! I came in here last spring around April 2013 with a girlfriend to indulge on mercury. Yay salmon and delicious fishes! This place definitely changed since my previous review. It is no longer a sushi buffet that it once was. However, they went onto bento boxes and lunch specials along with the Japanese basics. Streer clear if you were expecting the high end awabi. The prices are average and portions are good. Definitely try this sushi joint since it also comes with a romantic ambience. I had to say, I came in several more times prior to April and the chef had an oopsie with the miso soup. They mistaken vinegar for the seasoning. Lol. This particular jaunt was on a Friday night in mid-June. The area was a little bit interesting, but we found parking practically right outside the door. The dining room had a candlelight vibe going on, and the hostess was warm and friendly. What we had: Vegetable Yaki Udon: Tasty, large portion, with good, fresh veggies! Snow Shrimp Tempura: Very good! Only, it wasn't like described on the menu, it was like Honey Walnut Shrimp... Fallen Angel: Crab, avocado, scallops, and tobiko. Yum! Sweet Sixteen: The mango just made this roll POP! Halloween Roll: This one was actually free! The server brought it to me mistakenly, so she told me to keep it and enjoy it on the house. I have came here about 3 times in the past month alone and I believe everything is good for the most part. I am just happy there is a good sushi spot so close to home, but this place is average compared to a few of my favorite sushi spots up North. Plus, this is a BYOB spot, so that is definitely a plus. The service here has been pretty good, but I believe they have introduced a new wait staff. It is a pretty small location, so I would recommend making a reservation just to be safe because this place is pretty random. Sometimes it would be empty and at other times it would be packed. For my fellow Yelpers, if you check-in, you get a free Edamame, but our waiter still charged us for it on the bill, which we never complaint about, but keep this in mind if you use this offer. For appetizer, the Fried Calamari is pretty good and the Thai Chili Sauce goes perfect with this. For sushi, I like the American Eagle, Cherry Blossom, and Fallen Angel. The Black Dragon, Anaconda, and Mexican Roll is okay as well. The Grayslake Roll is suppose to be popular there, but we didn't like this. It tasted kinda bland compared to the other rolls. Oh yes, how happy I am that this treasure is not far from where I live. I came here for my 22nd birthday this past Wednesday with 5 of my friends. We ordered 7 rolls and no appetizers but were given fried shrimp drizzled in two types of sauces which were delicious and complimentary with edamame as well. One of the sauces was sweet and the other was spicy. The rolls were made to perfection and quickly since we were the only table there. Then, service started to pick up as the restaurant filled. Customer service was great and the best part was that there was no corking fee. Mind you, we had about 3-4 bottles of wine that night. It was a great time and I'll definitely be back. My boyfriend moved to Bridgeport back in April and we were in search of a good sushi spot and found it!! This is a hidden gem in Bridgeport! We checked in and got our free edamame too which was great! The food is fresh & really tasty! We had this awesome hot shrimp appetizer where the shrimp was wrapped in bacon and it was sooooo good! I've also tried rolls like their spicy tuna, yellow tail, spicy scallop, & rainbow roll and loved them all. We have been twice and plan to go back more! The only thing we are not super crazy about is the cucumber water they serve. I would prefer just plain water or lemon water. Regardless anyone reading this should go try Kawa! read more

The fallen angel roll had just the right amount of spice and the addition of the seaweed salad inside gave it a nice crunch texture. Spicy tuna handroll was also very good and had a hearty fish to rice ratio. If you check in on yelp, they give you a free order of edamame (pretty decent portion too!). Anaconda roll was good too. I'll give it about 3.5 stars. I came with a Groupon and surprisingly they let us use it with the buffet. We went during lunch and only one other person was in there. Waitress did inform us we had to pay for any food that's uneaten. Chicken Yakitori - We ended up getting 2 orders of these. It wasn't bad, but we wouldn't order it if it wasn't for the buffet. Snow Shrimp Tempura - Not bad, but it's like walnut shrimp without the walnut. Spider Roll - We ordered 2 of these too. This was really good. Crazy Salmon - This one is fried. It was ok, but I probably wouldn't order it again. Eel with Avocado Roll - We ordered the eel with cucumber, but they gave us this. I liked it, but my sister isn't a big avocado fan so she only ate one. Sweet Potato Roll - Lately, I've been seeing a lot of people rave about this. I had to try it. I liked that it had a crunch to it, but not sure if I would order it again as the sweet potato flavor was light. 2 Piece Masago - My sister ate this. Overall, I think the food was very fresh and I enjoyed most of it. I believe they are a bit overpriced. Buffet options didn't even have unagi pieces or any of their signature rolls as options. I and two of my friends come here the first time. It has a great environment, and the service is very nice too. I might bring my other friends here next time. However, I think that the price is a little high since each of us spend 24 dollars and still didn't feel full at the end. I believe i will come again when they start their sushi buffet which is 25 dollars per person. As from the food, I liked Fallen Angel, it's very flavorful. my friend liked Dynamite because it has cheese in it. The other friend liked Sweet sixteen which has mango in it. After 3 orders of specialty rolls, we are still not very full, so we ordered udon with shrimp. But like the other yelper said. The quality of noodle was great, they are chewy but the flavor of it is blah and i dont think I will order it again. Over all it was a good dining experience and I will recommend it. i gave 4 star because it's a little pricy for me . :( read more
