Stopped in with my daughter (14) because she just loved the clothes in the window. Had a little bit of stickers shock, but I wouldn't have minded.....if the staff hadn't been extremely rude. My daughter was going to try on some clothes when we were told the store was closing in 2 minutes and we would not be able to try anything on. The staff was literally kicking people out the door. I totally love South Moon Under. Its one of those places i have to sift through a little bit (due to my deep aversion to deconstructed clothes, terrycloth, and tunics), but this place rocks. It's great for when you need a nice dress, a funky new top or accessory, or a great pair of jeans. I've never gone in there and not wanted to max out my credit card. Normally I'm a fan of South Moon Under but my experience today was pretty awful. I was shopping for a dress when all of the sudden my foot slipped in something squishy. I looked down and there it was...dog poop. Not only did it take awhile for an associate to notice me because they were socializing and running around but once they did, they rushed me into the back bathroom barefoot so I wouldn't track it through their store without so much as an apology. Then I found out there weren't any paper towels in the bathroom. There wasn't an associate to be found so I ended up using toilet paper to wipe it off and some air freshener to get rid of the smell. What makes this all worse is that I didn't get an apology even AFTER I complained about how the situation was handled. That said, I left the store needing a new pair of flip flops and feeling...shitty. read more

I used to be a very loyal Clarendon South Moon Under fan. I found that under the previous manager's leadership that all of the staff members were energetic, friendly, knowledgeable about style, and very customer focused. It's evident that the old manager is now gone because the last handful of times I've gone in the store almost all of the staff have changed, and when you walk in the door no one greets you or even says hello. Today, for example, I walked around the store for 15 minutes, passed at least four employees none of who made eye contact, smiled or said hello. I will note that one of the employees almost ran my baby carriage over while she was distracted checking herself out in the full length mirror though. When I was finally ready to check out, there was only one other customer in the store and she was in line at the register in front of me. The employee at the register was trying to locate an item placed on hold for her, and the employee had to re-ask the customer three times what the item was and what it looked like. The customer was clearly frustrated. There I was waiting for a good 10 minutes while I watched three other employees chatting behind the counter, none of who thought to open up a second register or even make eye contact. When I finally did check out, the employee never asked if I was in the system as a regular customer like the employees used to do religiously. While South Moon is a bit pricey, I had always been a loyal customer because of the Ritz-Carlton service I experienced each time we went in. Now that, that level is service is gone, I can easily choose from any one of the other generic overpriced, under customer "serviced" boutiques in Clarendon. Please South Moon, bring back the old management and happy employees. You are losing your regulars. read more

I don't see why this store does so well. Very rarely do I see something I actually like here. And when I do, I find it for a better deal either directly from the brand or even at Bloomingdales. I have looked at their sales, and have never seen anything grand. I used to work right next door and would come in here often to see if anything was new. This South Moon Under is by far the best I've ever been too! There is always a huge amount of clothing available and an wide variety of outfits to pick from. The best part about this location is the employees. I personally have trouble finding things in a store whether I think it won't look good on me, or I just don't know it exists! An employee named Bailey helped me find so many great dresses that I saw but didn't consider, and I ended up almost buying all of them. Love this store and the merchandise that they carry. The store is easy to navigate and it is clean. The ladies that work here are very friendly and they are usually willing to help out. I found the perfect JEANS!!! And for me, this is no easy task. Finding the perfect pair of jeans to replace my old ones has taken about 9 months (with an intermeidate pair in between to last me until I could find the next perfect pair). I was kind of skeptical of the store with little nick-nacks in the front, looking more like a specailty shop than high end jeans and tops. However, after venturing in, I found a few things to try on. Airport lost my bag so I was in Virginia will no clothes other than what I arrived in the night before and no car so I was pretty limited on how far I wanted to venture out to find something. The ladies took pity on me and helped me find a perfect outfit for the day and shoes so that I could have something else to wear at least until my bag arrived! I am so thankful!! I do like that they carry labels like Nanette Lepore and BB Dakota, however, I'm not about to pay $89 for an O'Neil bikini, I don't care how long it's been on the sale rack. There is a huge sale section but I've yet to buy anything on these racks. They also have a swimwear and fitness section which are tempting during these summer months. However, the customer service in this particular store in Clarendon is terrible, the girls are pushy and rude, especially the one who I think is the manager of the store. IMHO: For Men's clothing, it's mostly overpriced. That said, you can find good sale items, t-shirts, or those brown flip flops that are necessary in Arlington. Just be prepared to pick through $99 Boss shirts. read more

So I never really knew what this store was but needed a last minute outfit. They have an interesting but very limited selection of high and low end brands, nothing particularly spectacular. I had a great service experience because I went when it was basically empty on a Friday evening an hour before closing. Would recommend for a last minute outfit, but otherwise would not go out of my way to shop here. read more

Love the atmosphere of this store! Lots of interesting items. Not the cheapest place around however. I found a Free People skirt in the wrong size, and they were able to locate it in the right size at another SMU closeby. $21 for that skirt, too. The sales people were very friendly. My wife and I both love to shop but hate department stores and malls. We are also both professional salespeople so we excpect the service at a small store to be exceptional. South Moon has always exceeded our expectations and we have never found their employees to be rude or pushy. If I am trying on a shirt I expect a professional to offer me items to compliment it. Why else would I be paying retail? The cloths are beautiful and the selection is great (but not overwhelming). If you are a bargin hunter, like rumaging though piles of cloths, or lack the self confidence to have a conversation with a saleperson go to the outlets. read more

I purchased some amethyst hoop earrings back in February at your Clarendon location for about $40. I've only worn them a few times and the jewels starting falling out. I went to return these with the intention of just getting a store credit or another pair of earrings, which I think is more than fair. Due to the fact that I didn't have a receipt from 10 months ago and the earrings are no longer carried at your store, I was not able to get any sort of resolution. This is beyond poor customer service to me. I have been shopping at South Moon Under literally for nearly 15 years and have spent considerable amounts of money at your stores. There are a few problems with this. One, no one keeps a receipt for a purchase like this all these months later. Two, you ask us for our e-mail address and have our contact information as customers, but it only tracks purchases for 60 days. In this day and age, the majority of stores including Nordstrom and Anthropologie have records of all purchases for just this reason. Three, there should be a system in place to remedy situations when the product is OBVIOUSLY poorly made. When I asked the sales person in Clarendon, she said without a skew number, there was no way of giving me any sort of credit for the earrings. That is just ridiculous to me. There should be situations where exceptions are made. Then, another sales person in the Mosaic district store indicated, "Lots of products break after 6 months, that is just the way it is." Well, that is just unacceptable. I literally have worn these earrings maybe 4 times. This is a matter of principle to me. I feel that a company should stand by what they sell. This is not a normal wear and tear situation. This is a poor product and I shouldn't have to be the one to "deal" with it, South Moon Under should offer a comparable product when something like this happens. In addition, please update your computer systems so there is a record of the many many purchases I have made there over the years. This is why people shop at Nordstrom. I will always be loyal to a store like this and Anthropologie does the same. I will not be shopping at South Moon Under any longer. read more

This is one of the wife's favorite stores in Arlington. We seem to go there every time we visit her Aunt. I didn't realize they are such a big deal with all the locations in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey and New York. Their website is really cool and they do a great job with their YouTube channel. They have a great video that tells the history of the store and how is started back in the day as a surf shop and how they have evolved through the years. We always spend a long time at this particular location. It's the only one we have ever been to and we only go about once a year so we like to take our time and check everything out. The customer service is great and the staff members always make sure you are doing okay without being too annoying. It's always clean and well organized and I don't mind shopping with my wife at this place when normally I would find a couch to check email or play candy crush. I find myself actually shopping at South Moon Under and that's weird. This is a must stop if you are shopping on Clarendon. Check it out! read more

South Moon Under is one of my most favorite shops in the Baltimore, DC and now Philadelphia area. I have been shopping there for about 6 or 7 years or so and have always had great experiences there. They have a wide range of price points and SMU has always been my first place to go when I need an outfit for a date or even just a Friday night.
