I always seems to hobble out while feeling great at the same time. The instructors at The Pilates Room are clearly sadists and thoroughly enjoy watching others in pain. But, that's the fun of pilates and personal instruction. The method of instruction is quite traditional and the way they set up sessions ensures that you will always be challenged. Everyone is required to take 6 private lessons when they first join the studio so that the instructors can teach necessary movements and techniques while they evaluate your level. Thereafter you are able to move into semi-private lessons with a total of two or three students (a little easier on the wallet) if you wish. You are matched with other students at your level so that you can move through the exercises together with no one person struggling to keep up or waiting for the others to catch-up. They studio has lots of equipment which is all well taken care of. Occasionally on particularly warm days the space can stink of sweat, but if you open the large sliding doors you'll soon be able to breathe again. While it's massively expensive because you either have to do one-on-one sessions or semi-privates, it's worth every penny. I'm completely addicted!

This weekend they're having a free shiatsu massage workshop that I am dragging my husband to. The studio itself it beautiful. It has three different spaces, nice hardwood floors, and showers. It's well-lit and has a nice "energy." You can say that sort of thing in a yoga review. I really like Claire, who teaches pilates. She's super friendly and helps students individually. She works with students at their own level, which I appreciate. The general vibe of the studio seems a little serious, but people are also pretty friendly. I've met a couple of nice women, and people are welcoming for sure. My main feedback is they don't do a lot of adjustments in class, which is something I really liked from Satori Yoga in SF. I think adjustments are really helpful both for safety and learning. They let you use their mats if you have a towel to put on top. I really do need to buy my own mat, since communal yoga mats tend to a smell a little funky. I really like that this place is walking distance from my house and an actual studio/community, not just a single teacher renting a space. It's near West Norwood/Tulse Hill train stations, and really not a far walk from Streatham.

Once inside, the studios are on the third floor, before entering the yoga/Pilates studios there is a beautiful open and modern reception area with comfy seating and the temptation of a post class or treatment coffee or tea. There are changing rooms for both female and male students with showering facilities and clean modern toilets. The studios are all light and airy and retain some of their original features from the buildings previous incarnation. A special feature for winter and cold evenings is the under floor heating, perfect for a 6:30am Mysore class on a chilly January morning. All the teachers I have met so far are warm friendly and so unpretentious, their knowledge of all the disciplines on offer is not only extensive but trust-worthy. I've been attending the studio for over a year now and so happy that South London is supplied with yoga studios that are not only clean, modern and large, but warm, friendly and welcoming in every sense.

The instructor, Gok, is awesome. Full of energy, extremely fit, and cool. Being my first time, Gok was patient to show me the ropes and correct my form. There are 10 students per class, and is open to all levels - you can work as hard as you wish. The studio is clean and modern. Pilates reformer classes are on the ground floor, and the TRX and Barre classes are held on the lower ground floor. Although I didn't try the Pilates class yet, I had a quick peek into the studio and was quite impressed with their equipment. The reformers are up to date and appeared brand new. The woman working the reception was very friendly and will give you a quick tour of the studio upon checking in. The unisex locker room is open plan and very clean. Each locker has a key, so you don't need to bring your own lock. Also, towels and filtered water are provided. There is even a shower. Overall, I had a fantastic first time experience. I would recommend giving it a try if you want a hardcore workout.

It is a little confusing that there isn't a front desk to check in. When I arrived I opened the door to the waiting area and a few women were sitting there. I knew I was going to be tired the next day. Ban showed us how to do the exercises and encouraged us along the way. The locker rooms are very nice and there is water and towels in the workout room.
