He said the best part about SIU was that switching majors was easy and he found his passion in design and became very successful. We visited the campus in April 2026 and he hadn't been back there in 40 years! The campus was very nice and he said a lot had changed but the houses he lived in are still there. A got a SIU t-shirt from the nice bookstore in the Student Center building. Represent!

I took a 6-week geology field course through Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale in June…read moreand July of 2015. My school was the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and it did not offer a multi-week field class (consecutive multiple weeks in the field) at the time, so I started looking up programs I could apply to through other universities. The SIU program was on the longer side (approximately 42 consecutive days in the field from start to finish) and had a breadth of geology and geophysical methods and projects. All 6 weeks were in the field in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. The rocks were amazing and teaching thorough. My appreciation for the materials covered and projects executed has increased with time/hindsight. Logistics through the SIU administration were straightforward and I had no problems with transferring the credits I earned back to my alma mater so I could graduate on time.

When we dropped him off he was second guessing and was pretty miserable for the first 3 month being so far from home. He started making friends within 3 months with kids that enjoyed the same interest he had. He LOVED this school and it was the best years of his life. He loved the college, his friends and professors so much that he planned on moving back to Kentucky Murray area one day. He met the love of his life here also and planned on getting married and living in Murray. Sadly he passed away at age 27 and never got the chance to fulfill that dream. If you're considering this school, I give it a BIG YES!!!!!!!

So we make sure that we visit all the state schools in Indiana to find out what the campuses look like and what their culture is like. Vincennes University is a smaller university in southwest Indiana. The campus is very walkable. I think you'd be hard-pressed to be late to classes on a campus so compact. Some of the buildings have clearly had recent upgrades, while others were in the middle of construction when we visited. It was odd that the campus tour didn't include visiting any dorms or the student center. We saw on their website that they have a really nice recreation center too, which we weren't invited to see. But we did get to enjoy our gratis lunch in their dining hall, which was really nice. At the time of our visit, one of our kids was interested in cosmetology, for which Vincennes has a program. Now I know I said the campus is pretty compact, but the cosmetology salon where the students gain their practical experience is actually way off campus, in downtown Vincennes. It's a really old facility. I hope they secure some funding to update it soon, because it was really quite decrepit. Staff and student volunteers (ambassadors?) were really warm and welcoming though throughout the entire program. The staff made sure to answer all of our questions and the students all seemed very happy with their choice to attend and it was palpable. That's important to me as a parent.
