We got there probably 4:15 and we didn't leave until 5:53. There were only two other tables not including us. It took the server a long time to come over and get our order and then the food took what seemed like a really long time. I had the dark meat pan, fried chicken, and the flavor was not great for me. I enjoyed the collards, though. I mixed them with my mashed potatoes which seemed to be missing butter. we also ordered the mixed platter that has ribs chicken and supposedly pulled pork but they had run out so I think they put some brisket on there. what I did really enjoy was there banana pudding we also had the cheesecake but again I didn't find it appealing. Now, I am gonna say that I don't eat fried food a lot so my review of the food could be bias or off, but for me I wouldn't go back and the service wasn't great. read more

Overpriced. Food way over seasoned (too much salt). The meatloaf was dry and overcooked. The pulled pork was also dry. Can't say anything good about the sides either, roasted carrots were roasted on the outside and hard on the inside, and the greens were disappointing. Southern fresh hands down the best fried chicken in this area. We have eaten here many times and took a break for a short time. They are back full press with wonderful service and very fresh food. The mashed potatoes and green beans that came with the fried chicken meal were also cooked to perfection. Husband had the seared pork chop and he said one of the best he has had in a long time. Tender and just right seasoning. Pork chop was a large portion and price point nice for serving size. Wish I would have snapped pics our party of four was hungry and we dove right in. Very disappointed to revisit this formally wonderful restaurant. Have been here many times on my visits to Safety Harbor in the past. The nicest thing I can say is that the southern fried chicken was really amazing. However, the potatoes that came with it were cold and the greens were mediocre. My husband had a meat, meatloaf dinner that was really gross. It was two slices of meatloaf that had been fried. I guess to reheat it, it was nearly burnt and dry. Also, his potatoes were not hot and the carrots served with it were burnt, I think on purpose. The service was fine because we were the only ones there. The atmosphere is the same as it was with a nice fire outside with the outside tables and inside really simple undecorated walls and tables.. a big disappointment, will not be going back there. I would suggest adding some new items to the menu and being more conscious of temperatures of the food and delivery. read more

Neighbors wanted to try this place so we gave them a go. Started with a couple of bottled beers. They have no domestic draft. A little disappointing considering the bottle beers are almost $6 each. Neighbors got some sort of local apricot draft. She liked it he loved it. Two of us ordered the fried chicken and I got the catfish and one person got the pork chop. I would say if the prices were lower it is a great deal but being that everything is priced at over $20 seemed a little much for what we got and the atmosphere of the place. I thought the chicken was good but not great. Green beans I guess are southern-style which I found out I don't care for. I like mine crunchy and kind of firm. These are soggy and vinegary. Coleslaw was creamy but not my cup of tea. My homemade is much better. Mashed potatoes were great. I would definitely get them again. Pork chop was a good size a little hard to cut and eat but neighbor liked it. Catfish was very good. Tartar sauce good but not thick and I like it really cold in temperature. The star of the show was the chocolate chip bread pudding. I would give that five stars all day long. All in all a good visit and I'm sure we'll be back because the neighbors are a fan. read more

This review is based on my visit last night. As I've stated previously I love fried chicken and I consider Southern Fresh to be some of the best I've ever had. Each order of chicken is cooked fresh to order. The fried chicken comes out piping hot, juicy and Crispy!! I usually go with the mashed potatoes and green beans which were home style and made from scratch. I get the gravy which is tasty and pairs really well with the creamy potatoes and the fried chicken. I come here regularly and this place hasn't ever let me down. read more

Delicious, quaint restaurant with friendly service. The pork belly appetizer is TO DIE FOR! The bbq sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy and the pork belly is smoked. The pulled pork sandwich and fried chicken sandwich are also delicious. Pro tip: ask for a side of the bbq sauce with the pulled pork, it's the same sauce as the pork belly. My second visit in a couple of yrs and I was truly disappointed. First the menu is limited due to the hurricane and $2-3.00 more. Ok I can afford grace. I ordered the fried catfish 2 sides and the white meat fried chicken with two sides. The catfish was old and seems to have been fried in old grease as my hands were dripping with grease. I was really looking forward to my meal after my first visit was so great. I guess it will take businesses time to recover so buyer be cautious. I wish I could give a review on the food but I never even ended up with my plate, I came to this disgusting racist place with my wife and we waited 1 hour and 15 minutes for fried chicken.... I asked the server twice where the food was and after waiting 20 more minutes we just decided to leave. Just for reference my wife and I are Arabic they never made any comments but the looks and lack of hospitality was all I needed to know about this garbage "restaurant." After church our group of six wanted to try a new place, for us. My wife and I, niece and boyfriend, with granddaughter and friend were a group of mixed tastes. We called ahead and arrived quickly, good thing because it is a small restaurant. We were seated immediately and brought menus and drinks. A little uncomfortable due to closeness of tables. Ours was next to soft drink and ice machines so had constant traffic. Staff was very friendly and efficient. My wife chose the grilled chicken salad, niece and boyfriend shared a shrimp cocktail and side salad (they had a late breakfast and didn't expect to go to lunch). Granddaughter and friend shared a plate of chicken wings, which were huge, and I picked the grilled meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans, with a side of collards that looked nice. We had a bit of a wait for food but no problem since it gave us a time to talk. Our drinks, mostly waters, were constantly refilled. After a bit food came. Chicken salad, wings and shrimp cocktail were very good. My meatloaf and potatoes were very good but not great. However the Collard Greens were absolutely the best I've ever eaten. Super! In all, a nice small spot for very good food. Just expect tight quarters and have patience. read more

Restaurant week in Safety Harbor. Went to Southern Fresh for Dinner.. AWESOME. It's a small quaint place, food is amazing, service spot on and totally locally owned. House converted into a restaurant maybe10-12 tables plus patio dining. Pre-fixed meal ( not sure if that is/was for restaurant week only). Had the freshest of fresh salad, exceptional light coated fried chicken, real mashed potatoes/ gravy, yummy dessert and of course Sangria .. cold & fruity. After years of solely ordering the pan fried chicken, because it's that damn good, we have finally tried the coal fired marinated chicken and the mahi mahi. The mahi was hands down one of the best pieces of fish we'd ever had in our lives. So incredibly flavorful and well balanced. The coal fired chicken didn't disappoint either, a great way to taste what this place does best but healthier. The greens still hold up as the number one side dish choice for sure. read more

Second visit for me, first for my lady - we were both delighted with our dining experience last night!! This place has great atmosphere - kinda ''old school cool'' It was a beautiful night, so we decided to dine outside. We were warmly greeted by a young man (wonderfully named ''Batman''), who also turned out to be our server, as well. What an outstanding server he was! Friendly, helpful, attentive, professional, and knowledgeable - we couldn't have been more pleased Now, on to the food - just fantastic! My lady had the grilled meatloaf and LOVED it, my entree of fried chicken was delicious as well. We each enjoyed the mashed potatoes (perfect!) and I also ordered chipotle mac (YUM) Obviously, we'd STRONGLY RECCOMMEND Southern Fresh, and can't wait to return! read more

We met friends for dinner here and the most challenging aspect about this restaurant is what to order. It all looks and sounds so delicious! We opted for the chicken with mashed and our friends got a variety of sides and catfish. Everyone enjoyed their meal and we're looking forward to returning. Here are some tips. First of all our visit was in late October so the snowbirds weren't in town yet which may have helped. We made sure to have reservations about a week prior - I hate waiting and am not a fan of disappointment, so I always make reservations for any restaurant who accepts them. Parking wasn't as difficult as we had anticipated. We had a very short walk, but you may want to allow a few extra minutes before getting to Southern Fresh to be sure. This is a popular place with excellent food and a following for sure :). You can dine inside or out so check the weather ahead of time! Their fried chicken is amazing and don't ask me which sides to order because they're all so tempting it's not easy to decide. The service was excellent and someone even came around asking patrons if their meal was to their liking -- it may have been a chef or owner -- I forget who, but it was a very nice, personal touch. read more

We were seated fairly quickly on 3rd Friday (super busy street fair kind of thing that Safety Harbor does every month) and our server was great. We had outside seating by a large fire (happened to be a chilly night in February) which was really nice. The food didn't live up to the ambience and the service, however. The deviled eggs were not that flavorful and they were watery. We think they were maybe frozen? Their fish spread was fine if you like mullet. Mullet's not my favorite fish because it's a too fishy for my taste. I ordered the chicken sandwich which came with a VERY small piece of breaded thigh. I had to spit out gristle three times. The breading where it was crisp, was very tasty and the bun was good; the chicken- not so much. I will say their collards were very good and I'm super picky with collards. Others in our party ordered the meatloaf and the salmon and expressed both dishes were fine but nothing special. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be returning and that sucks because we value local food over big chain food any day. read more

We decided to walk to southern fresh as it is around the corner from my home and it started pouring. We got absolutely soaked in the 1/3 mile walk and when we go to Southern Fresh we were disheartened by a sign on the door that stated their gas wasn't working & they were closed. We stood under the awning for about 5 mins trying to get a game plan of where to go next and what our options were. Luckily, someone from the restaurant , later we learned this was the owner, saw us and told us the gas was working and food would be ready in about an hour & we were welcome to come in and have a drink while we wait. Not only did they allow us to come in prior to the restaurant officially opening but they took care of our whole meal. The staff, Taurus especially, made us feel welcome when we were pretty much drowned rats. Amazing hospitality. I ordered the meatloaf and must say the mushroom gravy that comes on top is some of the best I've ever tasted! I tried to take a picture but was too hungry to get it before I had a few bites. The fish spread was also very tasty and a great light appetizer option! A wonderful experience from an almost fail. I will definitely be coming back. read more

The food was delicious but the service was terrible. I understand places are short staffed but this place is small and regardless of size you'd think they'd appreciate the opportunity to serve and earn a tip. We walked in the server stared at us, no greeting--said nothing so we sat at the only clean table. He then came over and said the table was reserved and we needed to move... so we chose one of the two open and dirty tables. He eventually came to partially "clean" it and slapped the paper menus on the table. He came back for our orders, mind you the menu is very limited, my dad ordered the mama's meatloaf which said it came with broccoli. He politely asked if he could sub broccoli for greens to which the guy says we don't have broccoli so again he asks if he can sub whatever it is that comes with it then for greens. The guy hesitates, sighs and says uh sure. I order the fried chicken, my kid gets the redfish and my mom gets the catfish. We wait and wait and wait for our food. He brings out everything except the greens for my dad. When we are finally able to get his attention we ask him for them. He walks to another table where two people are sitting and grabs the greens from them and directly brings them to us. W T F ?! They had gotten their food 10 minutes before us so they had been sitting their a while. About 5 minutes later the table he grabbed the greens from walks out very upset without eating their food or paying. Clearly we were not the only ones disappointed with the service. He never refilled our drinks. When my mom asked for a small box he said we don't have small boxes, she said ok a box whatever size will be great, please? That took another 10 minutes when he finally comes back with the box I politely ask him to please put my chicken on a separate ticket with the redfish. He stops in his tracks stares at me, sighs, and says he will see what he can do. There were only two other tables sat & one was already cashed out. He was not that busy to be so bothered by simple requests. Maybe he was having a bad day. Idk. We still tipped 20% but he damn sure did NOT deserve or earn it. I wont go back. read more

It was a beautiful cool night and we were looking for a place to eat dinner, so when we drive past Southern Fresh with their inviting, roaring fire we decided to go there. We sat outside and had two other couples join us. The manager greeted us as well as our waitress. Everyone was helpful to answer questions about the menu and our food and drinks came properly. This place is filled with southern staples and is famous for their fried chicken. Other items on the menu are fried catfish, wings, meatloaf, limas, mashed potatoes, chipotle mac & cheese, with banana pudding for dessert! Interesting southern style restaurant. Somewhere on the small side but it didn't appear crowded. The servers were great, quick to offer help and fix mistakes because there were a couple. Had the catfish and fried chicken wings; asked for the wings to be fried hard with buffalo sauce on the side. Instead we got wings coated with buffalo sauce and instead of the wings being fried hard, the catfish was fried hard. To their credit, they were very quick to fix the order so I give them credit for that. Having said all of that, though the food tasted ok, it was just ok - but that's just my opinion, everyone is different so give it a try yourself and let me know what you think. read more
