He said the best part about SIU was that switching majors was easy and he found his passion in design and became very successful. We visited the campus in April 2026 and he hadn't been back there in 40 years! The campus was very nice and he said a lot had changed but the houses he lived in are still there. A got a SIU t-shirt from the nice bookstore in the Student Center building. Represent!

I majored in forestry at SIU. I got a great education from a great staff. I loved the hands on…read moreexperience in class. The campus is beautiful. The area is really conducive to learning forestry since the Shawnee National Forest along with learning outside on the beautiful campus. I also loved the small town/rural type atmosphere despite being from the Chicago area. Amtrak provides a convenient way of getting back to the Chicago area without driving. Greyhound does have a bus stop in Carbondale but I never used Greyhound. SIU offers a wide range of classes and activities. There is a trail around Campus Lake. A lot of off campus activities are available like fishing, hiking, and camping. Carbondale does have a night life too.

I wanted to acknowledge a firearms training session held last night (4-29-26). I thought the…read more2.5-hour session was refreshing to see, in that it was not just lecture based. There was lots of hands-on involvement by participants in attendance. I think the SIRT exercises/drills were a huge hit with everyone there. I sort of believe that you should tell people when they do something that is a benefit. Great Job...Keep it going!

The course covered Illinois law in great detail, took the class through various simulated situations and impressed upon us gun safety as well as formulating a home safety plan. I highly recommend this "academy" in which to take the CC 16 hour and 3 hour renewal course. The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. I learned a lot over the two day course and feel that they cared that I was doing this to protect myself and family. Thanks, guys!
