Even though the weather sucked big time, everyone made the best out of the situation. I liked the post race snack and the hooded jacket is the best swag I've ever received from a race. I swear if I get another cotton t-shirt from a race, my closet is going to stage a mutiny. Great course, volunteers, and swag, the "Perfect Storm" as far as races go. I might not do it next year, but if you're in the area, definitely check it out. Tips: Arrive early. I had rockstar street parking for free! Granted I woke at 4AM that day and was probably an hour or so early to the race. Look online for discount codes. I saved a bit of money by finding some mommy blog with a code. :) Bring a disposable blanket if you are cold. You might wait a bit in the start corral.

I just don't feel like it!" Keep the races coming, Columbus!

And I knew eventually I would come to Scioto Downs at some point. I always wanted to come here, ever since we drove past it in its original guise when I was a kid on the way to family get-togethers. I wasn't into horse racing or anything, but the idea sounded interesting, and later in life, I knew people that came down here, and one who was a jockey. But I just never made it down. And then when it became a casino, there really wasn't a draw there for me. It's pretty big, but not huge as far as casinos go. The hotel and the restaurants are on the northern end. The inside is a pretty standard casino, with flashing lights, and noise, although it's really not as noisy and jingly as some of them are. Pretty decent music playing most of the time, interrupted every once in a while by someone saying "I want money!" Or maybe "I won money!" But on the whole a pleasant enough atmosphere without being the sort of casino carnival you often see. Well, there's plenty of that still. But not overwhelmingly so. There are what they call open air terraces, covered outdoor areas with chairs and tables and sometimes slot machines. The one at least has a bar out there too. So, you can pull the handle outside in nice weather, or on a gray 20 degree day. There are free drink stations in one or two places inside, which you might want to keep in mind before you go eat. Food ranges from basic to brewpub to somewhat upscale Italian. Staff were friendly. You can spend a lot of money here if you want to. Or you can just come eat like I did. Not far out of town, plenty of parking. Apparently, they still have racing out back, although I didn't see it, and that's probably only on weekends in good weather. But they do have screens inside showing other horse races, and other sports. And it looks like betting facilities for those things. I don't know, I'll keep an eye on their schedule, maybe they have musical acts or something to come see.

The casino area seems dated and smelly. Separate area for smokers…read more The redeeming quality is the outdoor racing area.

The reason that we typically run the Cap City over the Columbus Marathon is because Cap City is in the spring as oppose to the Columbus Marathon that is in the late fall. For my fiance the fall is a difficult time of year due to football season (he is a coach), so we choose to do Cap City in the spring. We have done both the Half and the Quarter, the routes are always well mapped out. If you haven't done a race in Columbus, Ohio yet you will be pleasantly surprised to find out that there is not much elevation change throughout the route. It makes for a nice even, almost east race. Two years ago I switched from the half to the quarter and I had so much fun. It was like a leisurely Saturday morning run. I told myself after I crossed that finish that I am done with the half. Now I just want to go out, have fun, and enjoy my run and the others I'm out on the course with. I'm so thrilled with my decision and I'm never looking back. My favorite part is when I cross the finish line and I make my way to the after party. Food and drink is free and plentiful. The weather was perfect this year for the race (first time in years and years) and ideal to hang out for an extended period of time at the after party. We almost had too much fun at the after party!!!! So much camaraderie to be had with fellow runners. Congratulations abound and cans of free beverages are raised. We had the absolute best time this year. Try the quarter out, I bet you have fun!!!!

This was the best supported Half Marathon I've ever run, with support stations stocked with electrolytes and water every 2 miles! For once, I didn't have to run carrying my own bottle! Love this event, as it has a real community feel to it, now I want to move to Columbus :)

A couple of summers ago, we made it out to Lawrenceburg Speedway for its annual "Night of…read moreDestruction," what with school-bus races, a lawnmower derby, and the like. Naturally enough, this prompted a positive Yelp review. I compared Lawrenceburg Speedway to an attractive old minor-league ballpark and encouraged city highbrows to come out for a night of good cheap fun. While we were out at Lawrenceburg, our friend Larry advised us that the speedway there was "advanced" or highfalutin in comparison to Moler Raceway out in Clermont County. He was right. Lawrenceburg is slick, polished, and thoroughly mainsteam, exurban middle-class. It was pretty much inevitable that we were going to have to check out Moler. So last summer, we penetrated deep into the wilds of Clermont in the most appropriate way possible, in Larry's massive crew-cab Dodge pickup. We recently went back. If Lawrenceburg is a nice Double-A ballpark, Moler Raceway is a a straight-up knothole, gravel-strewn, all-dirt sandlot. (Or for those many Yelpers who like to call any restaurant or bar or other going concern a "dive" if it looks older than the 1990s and if less than 85 percent of the crowd falls below median U.S. income or education levels, they're going to have to come up with a whole new down-and-out term for Moler Raceway.) Moler is flat-out country. It's hidden back in a clearing in the Clermont woods, and when you finally arrive in Moler's overgrown grassy parking area, you might think you've stumbled upon an old-time backwoods tent revival meeting. Aside from the race cars and the dusty track, there are a couple of low-slung cinder-block buildings, some old wooden bleachers that have seen better days, and a shabby pressbox. (Unfortunately, there are only Port-a-Lets rather than actual bathrooms.) The seats are separated from the dirt track by a tall chain-link fence that looks patched together. In other words, it's just about perfect. A couple of weeks ago we went back for a night of racing: late models, modifieds, Chevettes, and compacts. The first two types of cars produce the most speed and power and thunder, sliding around the tight turns and kicking up big clouds of dust. (You might want to get your beer in a can rather than asking for a draft.) But it was all pretty entertaining. As I said in my Lawrenceburg review, I couldn't really care less about following motorsports or watching them on television, but as a now-and-then $13 entertainment value Moler is hard to beat.

Can't ask for a better run track! Race track run by racers. They care and it shows.read more
