Food was good, though fairly basic with limited choice, but with good sized portions and well cooked, service was first class with staff always helpful and friendly. The hotel a little run down with bedrooms in need of decoration and general refurbishment, but all the essentials in good order and clean, towels and bed linen brilliant white. Good functional TV provided plus tea making facilities with generous supplies. A well stocked bar with good entertainment was available, mostly bingo but never the less a happy atmosphere. One wall of the dining room covered with Thank- you cards and the guest book at reception full of favourable comment. If you are prepared to turn a blind eye to the scruffy bedroom décor, then this should prove an ideal location for a basic and cheap holiday break.

The rooms are extremely cute and charmingly appointed in antique finishes, fine soaps, novels, robes and slippers, a box of teas and shortbread cookies (packaged, not fresh), and a bottle of water from their true roman well. The staff greet you warmly at the door and seem to remember you like an old friend. The downstairs looks like an old tavern with plush arm chairs and couches. The hotel has a great restaurant for dinner with Michelin like entrees. (Will try to post photos of my meal later). The breakfast offerings were a little sparse, but pleasant. They always had a table with my room number waiting for me. The service was very doting, but inconsistent unfortunately. When I had asked about travel information for the area, they sat me in a huge antique chair and brought me a huge basket of travel books and old pamphlets. They even pulled books from their downstairs shelves and insisted I keep them during my stay. The night manager (or owner), offered to have horse riding reservations made for me at ranches they had relationships with and have me driven anywhere I wanted to go in the area. He told me to just talk to the staff in the morning, but when morning rolled around, the staff didn't seem to be in on all the promises nor did they know anything about nearby stables. Was fine. They helped make other calls for me and get me pricing, but a little odd. The day staff was definitely not as helpful nor knowledgable. There was a slight musty smell in my room. When I asked if all the rooms were like that, I was really impressed with their response. They moved my things immediately to a much larger much nicer room. The next room unfortunately was a bit musty too, but enjoyed the upgrade enough, that it didn't really matter. They have wi-fi at a cost. It unfortunately seemed a little spotty. Had to ask them to bounce their router a couple times, but they always accommodated as quickly as they could. Not perfect, but enjoyable enough. Would definitely consider staying here again.

A very relaxed, quality feeling full of anticipation of being completely spoilt! The menu looked delightful but was about £30 a head as I recall which is, I think, quite expensive for a non-special occasion. Highly regarded by several people who's opinion I would trust and on the list for the next special occasion. The chefs often win prizes in national competitions and the accommodation is, I believe, very stylish although I don;t have first hand experience of it.

Their catchphrase seems to be That's not a problem and the food is exquisite. At a recent wedding the whole place was turned over to the families and guests with exclusivity meaning just that. Ok, so it can be expensive but quality and style come at a cost. The decor seems to have been gathered from stately homes, the gardens are well maintained and worth a visit just for themselves. The added joy is the complete lack of mobile coverage which complements the atmosphere. Even the children's meals were special and they loved the idea of four poster beds and hidden treasures to seek out. Glorious, but then again I had one of the best weekends of my life!

No fridge, no tea making facilities ( although complimentary tea in the room before breakfast) The Bathroom in dire need of refurbishment, a tiny bath that I could not lie down in, despite being under 5'5, and a general lack of attention to detail. The newest glossy magazine in the room was a year old, the rest being just free magazines from the likes of BMW. The main hall also had nothing new to read, and when asking reception about something to read I was told to go and look in the other reception rooms myself. this also did not turn up anything to read ! They new it was a birthday treat -but no mention ,and not even a welcome card !! The reception rooms all have open fires, but they have such big guards across them, no real heat escapes into the rooms, and of course takes away the atmospere !! We would possibly give it another try, but as it is all so pricey, ~I am not sure I would bother !!

As a previous reviewer mentioned it is in the country with lovely vistas, unfortunately that is the only good I am able to find. The desk staff were unfriendly. Never looking up or acknowledging gusts when they came by. Recommended a restaurant that was closed. When a problem was reported with the room (a burnt out lightbulb over the mirror) it was "duly noted" and never repaired over our 4 day stay, even after several reminders. The lounge/bar had lights so bright that they would have served in a operating theatre. More could be said but in summary a tired, once grand place, that is in need of repair and staff training. So unfortunate with a property with such potential.
