FORMERLY known as Southland Bar, the very-recent new ownership renamed to The Alley Bar. The name wasn't the only thing that changed, and it wasn't for the better. With new ownership comes an affiliated new crowd coinciding w/ old crowd. You could cut the tension in the air w/ someone's pocket knife because you just felt at least one person was packing. I never felt the need to look over my shoulder regularly thru the night til now. Territorial is an understatement. It could be your first visit, and you could tell two different groups were there. Service was disappointing. A customer is a customer, but I noticed new ownership neglected old crowd to tend to her crowd or anything else to keep her "busy." Meanwhile, original bartenders were bending over backwards for everybody. We, in the old crowd, are familiar enough w/ each other for some small talk at the bar while waiting for drinks. They were as confused and shocked as I was about the service. I don't even want to mention what I saw in owner/staff interactions, but I'ma just leave it at sad. It was just sad. I'm not a regular regular, but Southland was the spot for my friends and me when we wanted a night out together for past couple years. Now, we're back to bar-hopping for a new spot because The Alley Bar ain't it. I'd give her benefit-of-the-doubt because she just picked up the place, but benefit would imply I saw an effort in keeping old crowd loyal while inviting new life, too--yeah, no benefit here. R.I.P. What a fun happy place! Great bartenders and drinks, super friendly energy and vibe. I was in LA for work and ended up in Torrence for a night because my lodging farther north had an issue. I wanted a quick drink and this was the closest little bar. Lucky me for the lodging problem because I ended up having the funnest night with the nicest people ever and I can't wait to come back. Came here to support my colleagues boyfriend on his first time being a DJ and had a great time!! I walked into an empty bar but it was to my advantage since I was able to choose my seat. The DJ started up and the music was jamming. The bar tenders were great hostesses and one of them even let me taste one of her signature drinks. They have a large selection of different types of alcohol so you should be able to get more than what you would at any other bar. My friend brought us here for a girls night out on a Saturday. She had this brilliant idea to come here at 9pm to get parking. We got parking. The place was dead. Things didn't "pick up" until around 11pm. Once it did get picked up....it was disappointing. The general age here seemed like 21 (and some of them looked like they're from high school). It was not cool. Especially when you're gettin' HIT-UP by 21 year-old boys. We scurried on out of there by 12:30am. Our bartender Alicia (big KUDOS) was the saving grace. But sometimes it nice to get a drink at a clean, classy place. That is, clean, classy, with animal heads on the walls! an update to my last review... I had a very busy week, and needed to blow off some steam, so this past Friday my cousin and I went out to Hollywood. We wanted to drink and relax, dance and be distracted. Long story short, we realized we just wanted to come back to Southland. Imagine how surprised we were, when even though we had only been here once (exactly one week ago) the bartenders Wes and Bill recognized us and offered us olives! :) (see story in previous review) And David the bouncer actually even remembered our names! Southland was a little busier than last Friday, but in a good way. And there was still room for us to relax, sit, drink and dance. We had pleasant conversations with random people, had some nice drinks beyond the usual stuff (try their fresh blackberry mojito or fresh cranberry mojito!), danced, and played some pool, and the night was saved! Who needs Hollywood when you have Southland? Another thing that I would like to note -- this is a genuinely nice mixed crowd. As I was talking with others who used to come to this place when it was CJ's, they said it used to be just hispanics and blacks, and they each had their own area of the bar - very segregated. But at Southland, the crowd represented all races, people were all very polite/friendly, and everyone intermingled. The bar tenders walked by me several times looked at me and walked on. It got packed very fast, they had two TV's in front of the bar. The place has a small dance floor and one pool table. Cool bar to have drinks with friends. On arrival, the bar was empty but that quickly turned around as the night went on. The cocktails are decent and reasonable in cost. I was impressed by the Mezcal Mules. Good stuff! If you check in on Yelp, you're also given a free shot. No complaints to free alcohol. Located in the corner of a small plaza, I must've passed by Southland Bar a trillion times but it was only recently for a college alumni event held here that I got to check out Southland Bar. Surprisingly it's a lot bigger inside than one would think. I found it to be pretty spacious with plenty of room for a big crowd. The decor intrigued me a bit. Walking in there is what appears to be pages from an old book. They also had weird looking lamps and a moose head. I couldn't quite get what type of look this place was going for but it was interesting. The bar is long with lots of tvs that are good for watching games. The bartenders were helpful as well. I have only been to the Southland Bar once but on that trip I found a slew of things that will ensure many return visits. Cheap, strong drinks Cool lamp shades made out of ram antlers A big ass moose head behind the bar An awesome vibe They also have a great happy hour Mon-Fri, from 6pm to 8pm, that includes $2 draft beers and $3 Haute Vodka's. The bar itself is dimly lit and there are many TV's all around the bar and even a big protection screen on one of the walls. SB also has lots of seating and even a pool table. Another cool thing about SB is their specialty drink menu. This menu contains about eight cocktails and about fourteen specialty shots. While I was at SB I tried the Redondo Beach Breeze, which was made with Rokk citrus flavored vodka, ginger ale, blue curacao, pineapple juice and lime juice. Since I love pineapple juice, I loved this tasty drink. One thing that did bum me out about SB was they ran out of one of the ingredients to make their Manhattan Beach Mojito and it was only nine o'clock at night. Bummer! *SMH* From what I remember of this place, it reminded me of the aborted bastard child of the famed V20 in Long Beach, especially with the mostly Asian demographic of customers this place has. From the outside, it looks like a cool restaurant with that huge Olde English with a twang of the Bone, Thugs-N-Harmony capital style "S" in the front with the bWo background lighting accents. Once you go inside, it looks like a glorified man room. If I wanted to go to a man room, I'd hang out at a friend's house for free. LOL at the females who complained about them having only 1 restroom stall for them... damn. The DJs (most of them, but not all) were the same ol' mostly egotistical laptop bearing "disc jokeys" who get paid to press "PLAY" while not having any kind of personality, MC and/or promoting skills, it seemed. I came here last night for the soft opening and this place was unexpectedly packed. Great crowd, great music with live DJ. This place is more like an upscale lounge than a local bar (I luv luv luv the interior!)..reminds me very much of the lounges in downtown, LA, but without having to pay for parking and wasting half a tank of gas just to drive all the way out to LA..this is an awesome hangout spot and for the guys..a great place to watch games and fights with all the tvs there and a pool table. For all you Mojito lovers out there must come here to try the MANHATTAN BEACH MOJITO..it has FRESH BLUEBERRIES in it..I must say this is the best mojito in Cali! Um...it's been a little over 2 years since I've turned the legal drinking age and I've never been here? Granted I was still in college and I barely moved back home 10 months ago. Anyways, this is a great place in the South Bay to hang out with friends, grab a drink and/or dance the night away. Parking is scarce, but it's understandable considering how small the bar is. Once you enter, the bar is literally right in front of you. Drinks are anywhere from $4-$7. They're priced ok, but I felt the drinks were really weak. I'd rather stick to the beers if I'm going to purchase drinks from here again. Bartenders are nice like what others have said, but it was difficult to flag them down. Too many people were surrounding the bar area trying to order drinks. There were only two bartenders the whole time, and another two would come here and there to help out. To the left of the bar is a pool table and some open space for people to mingle. Restrooms are on this side and are on the smaller side too. Be careful of the rabbit head with antlers when you exit the restroom. I almost hit my head coming from the restroom. On the opposite side (right of the bar) are tables, seats, and a small dance floor. Most of the tables are 2-3 seats. The dance floor is quite small, but the music was popping on a Friday night. I like how all the hype and ratchet music plays through most of the night, but as the night winds down it's all 90s hip-hop and r&b. It gets hot on this side of the bar since most of the people are concentrated here. At one point they opened their large windows, so if you need to cool down just move your way there. There seemed to be a good mix of people here, though predominantly were Asian. My female friends mentioned that the guys at the bar aren't rude or try hard. Bouncers are nice and friendly. Now this is what a neighborhood bar is all about!!! What a difference from the old previous bar. The previous bar was scary, and skanky looking. (can I say that?) After it's newly re-owned name and upgrades, it became a more upscale bar. I love the new renovation where it's kind of open air. A big section of the Wall facing the front can be opened up! I never was here on a weekend so I don't know how crowded it can get. But for the weekdays, Thursdays and Friday nights, it's never over crowded! Great mixture of people/ crowds! Everyone is always friendly and nice here and everybody, (Yes, even the most fierce looking guy here, works with a smile and want to conversate with you!) A nice bar located in a strip mall in Torrance? Say what? From the outside, it looks like a dive bar. On the inside, it looks like a classy sports bar with a dance floor. I don't know exactly how to classify this bar, but it's good in my books. There are 4 flat screen mounted around the bar, three were showing ESPN while the other was showing Food Network. I really like this bar! I don't go to many bars cause.. I can get free alchy at house parties and whatnot haah but we came here after a fail clubbing night at Level 3.. I realllllly enjoyed the music that they played. I have no idea what I was listening to (I wasn't even that drunk, I had two beers..) but it just sounded good. The DJ that night was ZOOLY. The crowd is a bit younger, which made it all the more attractive. I was a bit hesitant to go, but after some convincing from my friend, we decided to go. The outside can look a bit intimidating, but once you get past a pretty chill bouncer, its really lively and vibrant. There's a pool table and a semi-dance floor. It goes until 10pm and you can get well drinks for around $3-4 and beer for even less. We were there on a Friday night and it was actually relatively quiet and empty right until around 9:45 when people started filling the place up, probably just early enough so that they could get at least one drink at happy hour price. According to my friend the DJ that showed up there around that time is there all the time and plays a lot of Justin Timberlake. Came on a Saturday night so the DJ played a lot of EDM/ Hip Hop/ R&B. The crowd is primarily early to late 20's. The bartenders are so nice!
