I'm a big fan of Babu Bombay Street Kitchen and the Glad Cafe so was really looking forward to this and to give Fire in Babylon a go!
To book, it was £5 pp in advance and then £15 pp on the night which got you a cocktail (rum punch), a starter, two mains and dessert. The set up was really good - two long tables which meant you got to get to chat to the people sitting next to you which is always nice at this kind of event! Even though we were there for the first sitting of the weekend, it ran like a well-oiled machine and there was no long waits for food. There is also a bar in the venue area if you wanted to get another drink.
The rum punch was a great companion to the sev puri which was SUPER spicy. Kind of like eating little discs of fire, but in a pleasant way. I ended up getting a water to go with it as I didn't want to drink all my punch trying to cool down my mouth.
Of the mains, the goat curry was my stand-out favorite. I was initially worried it looked bony but wasn't at all, and was really rich and meaty in flavour with a lot of juice and very tender. Unfortunately this was the first dish I tried so everything else was just "very good" in comparison. The only dish I really didn't like was the Babylon Doubles as I don't like chickpeas, but the bread with it was lovely so that worked out fine. By this stage it was a real struggle to finish everything as the portions were quite generous. The dessert was a really large slice of cake which could have easily been halved without seeming stingy. It went really well with the chai tea which was very savoury and balanced the very sweet cake well.
Service was really good all night, there was always people around and they were flawless. For £20 pp all up I thought it was a really good value night out and a bit fun and different. I really hope they do more events like these at The Glad Cafe!
Note: this was a pop-up event over the weekend of 17 - 19 January 2014. Hopefully it'll be repeated soon! read more
