I'm a single mother raising three kids while working a full-time job and going to school. I have always prioritized my children because I am a single mother, and I will go above and beyond to meet their needs. I do my best to provide a secure and encouraging environment for my kids. Involvement in the church has also played a significant role in the lives of my children and myself. I believed that utilizing various resources to assist me with my kids would be advantageous for both my kids and me, including therapy. I requested therapy for my children through Mountain View High School. Anita Odom, a therapist at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services, contacted me to set up care. When I spoke with Anita over the phone, she appeared to be empathetic to my situation and eager to assist me in restoring my family's bond. On August 22nd, 2022, I contacted Anita because I had various concerns about my daughter. The way Anita's voice sounded when we spoke on the phone made it seem like I was a complaining parent. After our conversation, Anita didn't seem concerned and said she would talk to my daughter about "safety," even though my daughter's actions went beyond "safety." I sought an African American therapist on August 29, 2022, after realizing after one week that Anita had not talked to my daughter about "safety." Anita informed me that to work with an African American therapist, I needed to have my children continue therapy with her. When Anita and I had our first phone assessment, she agreed to keep me updated on my children, but I never heard from her again until I contacted her about my children's concerns. I did seek an update on my children, which I never got. On September 7th, 2022, at about 2 p.m., I contacted Anita about my children's trauma and behavior; she insisted on a three-way call with her supervisor, Bethany McDonald. I asked Anita and Bethany if I could get a referral to place my children in a residential program to help them cope with their trauma and behavioral issues because therapy wasn't working. I explained how I am a single mother trying to get help for my children so that my family can build and maintain a healthy relationship and reunify. Anita asked if I have family in Arizona and made comments that had never been brought up before this conversation, such as: Were your children in foster care before we moved to Arizona? Didn't they stay with my sister before we moved to Arizona? Were your children living with someone else before we moved to Arizona? I explained to Anita and Bethany that my children have never lived with anyone else, that I have no biological sisters, that my children have never been in foster care, that I have no family in Arizona and have been estranged from my family members due to their negative behaviors, and that my goal is to break the generation curse with my children. Also, I stated that I have always had full custody of my children and that they have always lived with me full-time. Anita and Bethany immediately stated that my children would never be accepted into a residential program due to the program's criteria and that I should consider placing my children in foster care. I reiterated that I wanted to reunite with my children and build and maintain a healthy relationship with them, and I said that I would never consider giving my children to foster care. To assist me in enrolling my children in a residential program where they can receive comprehensive care, Anita and Bethany requested the medical records of their previous therapists. Anita and Bethany pretended to be willing to help me with my children. I trusted the staff at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services, but I should have known that they would let me and my children down just like the other resources had. I came to understand why Anita put Bethany on three-way: so, they could extract as much information as possible from me, take what I said out of context, and paint me as a villain in other people's eyes. Additionally, my son, who was sitting in the back seat of my car, overheard my conversation with Anita and Bethany, so he knows I didn't make any negative remarks about him or my other children. Around 8:38 a.m. on September 8th, 2022, Anita contacts me and informs me that the residential program I selected for my children is exclusively for girls. I informed Anita that Amber Terrones, who works in admissions, had told me the program accepts both males and females when we spoke on September 7, 2022. Anita denied that the program was also open to males. Anita inquired, "What would I do with my son if my daughter was accepted into this program?" I told Anita that I wanted to keep my son with me until I could find him the assistance he requires. Anita quickly assumed I wanted to divide my children and stated that doing so is extremely traumatic for my children. I explained to Anita that my goal is not to divide up my children, but rather to help them cope with their trauma and behavior. read more
