Ordered online and went to pick it up, eagerly looking forward to Mediterranean, which has been my lifelong comfort food. I've had it on both coasts and several locations between, and I can honestly say that was the absolute worst gyro plate I have ever had. I don't know if they cut it off a proper spit, or if it came frozen pre-sliced (more likely), but it had zero flavor to it. No pepper, no spice, no bite - nothing. It was lukewarm, bland, had no surfacing (even a little sear would have been something) and the texture was rubber. But wait, my story gets better. Set aside the meat, and we move on to the flatbread. I say flatbread, because pita has FLAVOR. Whatever this spongy mess was, it was NOT pita bread, and if it is supplied to them as such, they need to get a new supplier. Nothing had been properly heated, so the flatbread was also cold. The feta was cheap and also rubbery, vs. the moist crumble that feta should have. I've had better hummus from a gas station (it was lumpy and separating) and the cucumber yogurt sauce (they don't call it Tzatziki in the menu) was average at best. The one thing I can say in the positive, and this is where the one star came from, is the tiropita, which was lovely. Light, flaky, and well flavored. Pretty awesome hole in the wall. Got me thinking why I did not come here sooner. Atmosphere is okay. It is small and cramped but if you can get over that it is okay. Waitress was really nice got into a good conversation. Recommended some options for me that I never would of thought to try. (grilled cheese with cucumber sauce and combo pita wrap) I also ordered their curly fries. Idk if it was just my batch but the fries were nothing to write home about. I recently tried Souvlaki for the very first time! It took me 3 years to finally give it a shot and try it out and I must say that it was a pleasant experience. I had the gyro there and it was fantastic. The meal felt really light and filling at the same time. I also tried their curly fries, which weren't too shabby. The prices at Souvlaki are really good, too. I think they're a lot cheaper than some of the other options in the area. I will definitely be returning back for more. read more

Only a few steps from the library and a great place to grab a classic Greek Gyro for a great price. I will NEVER go back here again. I am an alumni and was visiting for the weekend and decided to visit here for a throwback to college...big mistake! The service is absolutely terrible. They literally have a sign that says "you can't complain about the service at souvlakis (because there isn't any)". The food was mediocre at best. Do not get the "kabob" unless you want 3 skimpy pieces of burnt chicken on a stick with a pita. When I asked the cashier for my fountain drink that I had paid for she rolled her eyes and reluctantly gave it to me. I haven't been here in awhile and was craving their delicious pita the other day so I decided to go there. Honestly, it just wasn't as good as I remembered it. Maybe it was an off day or something - I don't know. I ordered the combo and while the service was GREAT and it came out super quick, it was a soggy mess. The meats did not compliment each other - their flavors kind of combated one another. The tomatoes were horrible. I don't know what was wrong with them, but they just did not taste normal. There was so much juice/sauce (and typically I don't have an aversion to extra sauce) that the pita was breaking apart. It just wasn't pleasant. This is one of my favorite places to eat downtown, but they just didn't deliver. Maybe I should just stick to items on the menu that I know will be good. I love this place! A lot of people walk by it - my friends and I almost did before I mentioned that we should try it out. It's a lot like a diner, though smaller and less crowded (it may also have been because we were there at night). The servers were friendly, the music was good, and the food was good as well! We ordered gyros, souvlaki (to see what it was) and the curly fries. The gyros were very good - the meat wasn't too crisp or too soft, and the cucumber sauce is really good. The pita bread is also very good - the perfect temperature and texture. The souvlaki is marinated pork tenderloin, and it was also very good. It's a little juicier than the gyro, but otherwise almost the same dish. The curly fries are good to order to share - they're perfectly golden and crisp, and taste delicious. Everything tasted good! My only qualm with this place is the size of the portions, but for the price, it's about right. It's affordable for college kids, and it's a good late dinner if you're wandering by around 9 or 10 (it closes at 11PM Monday - Saturday, and 10PM on Sunday). Can't speak for the whole menu--- but the falafel is bomb. A really good spot for when you're hungry and are craving something that isn't extremely healthy or extremely bad for you. I am never not in the mood for a gyro from Souvlaki, whether it's lunch, dinner or a late night snack. I am not greek so I could be completely wrong rating this place... Their pitas are perfectly soft, I don't even know how to explain how good they are. The meat is quite delish. The tzatziki is amazing as well. Also, they load the gyros up with shredded lettuce and I have a weird obsession with shredded lettuce. So if you go here, get a gyro. They curly fries are delicious as well, They give you so much, usually if I am Souvlaki to go I do not splurge on the curly fries because by the time I get home the are a bit soggy, not their fault though! Extremely hit-or-miss service. It is VERY uncomfortable to be put on the spot and asked, "Would you like to add a tip to your bill?" particularly when the girl that just served you was extremely rude. I have, however, been served by several very friendly guys, though. Hence the "hit or miss" claim... That said, their food is really good. Their marinated chicken pita is made-to-order. It could use some additional toppings (it is now served with just yogurt sauce in its to-go form), but the marinade was flavorful and the chicken was cooked well. Souvlaki is cheap, filling, and a unique place in Blacksburg. You get to watch everything being made right in front of you and the staff is usually pretty friendly. My freshman year (4 years ago), the first time I ever went in there, I stared at the menu on the wall for quite a while, debating between the chicken and the lamb (gyro). The guy cooking gave me samples of everything - super nice guy. Just today I went in for a falafel and was very satisfied. Its nothing crazy, its what you'd expect, and honestly that is a good thing. Whenever I come back to visit, I'll always make a stop at Souvlaki. Also, they recently changed their hours to be a little more accommodating to those who go to the bar late-night....just keep that in mind. You don't HAVE to go to Jimmy John's after TOTS. I love this place. As much as Littlejohn's is a rite of passage for any UVa student, this may be the equivalent for any Tech undergrad. Sadly, it's not open 24/7 but it's just good Greek food. Every time I go back to Blacksburg, I make an effort to stop here. Memories of the pita with cheese, marinated chicken, and veggie pitas bring me back to sunny days laying in the grass in the park or drillfield enjoying my greek goodness. I miss this place. Most Tech students have walked past it a thousand times but not many can tell you where or what it is. Great hot and cold subs, and lots of good beers on tap. They also serve souvlaki (hence the name) and gyros (feel free to pronounce it like the gyro in gyroscope, they will know what you are talking about.) Souvlaki is great for the price -- cheap atmosphere, cheap food. Their falafel is good, but often a bit dry. The kabobs are great, but the kabob meat is cooked then removed from the kabob and served solo with some sauce and warm pita. No veggies, but hey - it's cheap! They recently started making their own french fries, and the difference is palpable. Their curly french fries are now my favorite fries in Blacksburg - they were OK before, but there is a quality gap between fries that come from a bag and fries that are hand made, in restaurant, from potatoes. Timing is everything with this spot. Like a lot of places that serve lots of meat, you kind of have to get there at the right time of day to make sure you get the best they have. I don't quite have the hang of it but I'd suggest you just keep an eye on the grill and see if they are in bulk mode or made to order mode. Either way, it's good, just sometimes it's better :) I hadn't run into this issue myself in a very long time but I have known several people that have had the chicken marinade on an occasion when it was very busy and they didn't feel well after. I'd assume that it was underdone. I tend to stick to the gyro, and add feta to it. A great way to get a big mess of food is to get the cheese steak. Which unless they've changed it, is made with gyro meat. I used to like their pitas a lot, but since I've started baking my own I don't get so excited by them anymore. I still like them as a wrap bread but aside from that, not too exciting. Best thing about Souvlaki is that they are one of the few places that are open late and aren't a bar. Yes you can get beer there, but you don't have to deal with crowds. Hours vary depending on the time of year but overall it's still going to be open later than just about every other sandwich place around. I've always had good experiences with the staff. Many of them are long timers but of course you get some student workers too. Give it a shot, and don't judge too harshly during their super busy times. read more

Since I had a craving for Greek salad with yummie feta and extra virgin olive oil I decided to order this at at Souvlaki. The salad I got was very disappointing. It was premade and they had to take of the price tag first. It contained of mainly lettuce which isn't supposed to be in a Greek salad. The feta tasted good but was hard to find. There was 1 slice of pepper, 2 slices of tomatoes, 2 slices of unions, 1 bell pepper and 2 olives. The dressing was disappointing too but I had to use it to give the slaw a slightly better taste.
