I liked a lot of things about Nikos, the atmosphere is fantastic if you are seeking that genuine family restaurant vibe- I imagine it would be great for family events to hire the place out, as it has a stage for live music, is reasonable priced, has a dance floor a full bar and is very clean. There is a noticeable lack in music though. The service staff are very willing to answer any question you have and are attentive throughout your meals-dare I say boarder line annoyingly attentive but potentially they are understaffed. They bring you water for the table, without asking at the beginning of the meal-as it should be- I appreciate that more than I can articulate. So they let you order Banquets for one! Isn't that amazing?! I've never seen that before! Banquets are always too much and you always have so much food that so much goes to waste, that this is the best thing I have seen a restaurant do! Plus, it doesn't single out the single folk who want the banquet but don't have another to order it with! Love it! We ended up ordering one banquet ($35) that came with five courses. I have posted photos of all courses except the meat course and the desert course. We also ordered a side plate of olives. The first course consisted of miscellaneous dips, which were all seemingly homemade, flat bread, pickled octopus, fasoulia, a dolmade and roasted capsicum. It was all as you would expect, nothing to write home about, the pickled octopus was great, not rubbery at all and perfectly spiced. Dare I say the dolmade was slightly decrepit, which indicated to me it might be tinned. I think I have made enough in my life to make the judgement. This plate was definitely big enough for two very hungry people. The second course was chicken from their spit and Saganaki. The Saganaki was cooked well and the chicken although tasty, I couldn't help but notice I wasn't eating a gyro. Promptly brought out again was our third course which was the meat with a lovely fresh green salad with cheap Bulgarian feta. The meat, again incredibly delicious, was from the spit. I was expecting cuts of beef or kebabs or keftedes, something that wasn't shaved for a take away meal. Between the meat course and the next course we waited, what seemed like a very long, unreasonable amount of time. Throughout the banquet they had gotten us accustomed to a certain pace and now that the restaurant had gotten busier our banquet had come to an abrupt holt, as did the meals of those around us. When the seafood plate finally came out, it was rather sad looking. As I put the oyster in my mouth I instantly felt it was a tremendous error in judgment. It had a distinct flavour of "I may kill you in your sleep." Thus I lived to tell the tale. The small piece of fish was overcooked, unseasoned and tasted thawed, as did the scallop and prawn. Neither of us were game enough to taste the mussel, photo attached. The chips were great. The plate came with sticky, oozy, yummy garlic sauce which was ice cold which completely creeped us out; I mean it should have been warm! At this point we never saw the waitress again, we got bored of waiting and decided we would get desert to take away. The desert was rolled baklava, Turkish delight and galatabouriko (I'm sure that's not spelled right) with three dried frigs and a random bunch of sultanas. Desert was nice, not in any way, shape or form close to being the best I've had, but nice. For the banquet, 1 beer, a soda water, side of olives, two full tummies and a nice time- we spent just over $50. I think that's pretty awesome. Next time I would probably opt for their take away side and avoid the seafood. I also think, considering that they are a Greek restaurant and all of their food is enhanced with lemon, they were skimpy on the lemon but maybe that's just me.

The food was great, very tasty dishes, amazing flavors and cooked perfectly. We started with fried cheese balls and the trio of dips for entrees, for mains I had the twice cooked pork belly and my fiancé, sister and her partner all order gyros. For desert we had the 2 smashed baklava dishes and coffees. The portions were reasonably sized and the meals very satisfying. Here's where the place was let down, their service. Our entrees arrived before our first drinks had come, there was no cutlery when food arrived, the staff were missing or not on the floor for large portions of the time we were there and ordering another round of drinks or asking for cutlery or a deserts menu meant waiting 20 minutes to flag down the only staff member in sight. It was very disappointing especially when the food was so great.

Ionio is the first restaurant next to Rebel Sport at Westfield Doncaster. Next to Rebel Sport? Yeh, that's a weird way to describe it... but factually it is true.... So far this restaurant space has changed multiple times since opening up the new wing, in fact I think it would have to be the most changed restaurant in Westfield Doncaster (anywhere challenge me by disagreeing?) Why is this place cool?: - Great seating outside the front and inside the restaurant. Outside you can sit and chat for a coffee and people watch if you so feel inclined - it is directly next to Village Cinemas). Inside you can see beautiful views of Melbourne - Hint, if you want to stay in the burbs for NYE book at this place! - Village Cinemas is right next door (repeating myself... yes, I know) - Great Menu - Great Coffee (& Bean choice) - Friendly wait staff

The casual atmosphere in this large and loud restaurant is a great backdrop for the menu. Choose from banquet options, mezze or mains, along with platters and sides. The gyros is perfectly cooked and delicious, not quite the same as wandering along a Greek port with gyros in hand, but you can't have everything! The mixed dips are also fresh and flavourful. This place celebrates Greece and specializes in functions so you get to celebrate too. They have a separate function space and also host large groups in the restaurant, if you ask nicely they may even open for just your group at lunch! The last time I was here was a work dinner and the atmosphere, food and music, along with the company, made for a spirited evening. This place is popular on Friday and Saturday night so book ahead if you can. You don't want to miss the belly dancing. Eos is Fully Licensed and BYO wine only. OPA!

While visiting Melbourne some months ago, I rather accidentally stumbled across Jimmy Grants at the…read moreEmporium on Lonsdale Street. Having just dined at Din Tai Fung for lunch, I walked past this location on my way out of the Emporium with my Mum. What initially grabbed us was the dense/rush hour crowd & the modern Greek menu. I'm also a sucker for neon lights, I'm not going to lie. The food we managed to scope out looked inspired & wholesome. It also struck me that quite profoundly, just how far food court offerings have come in recent years. I distinctly remember working in the corporate world, some 10 years ago & my lunch options often not extending past tired looking/pre-cooked Chinese, overpriced sandwiches, god forbid McDonalds, or my general go-to at the time 'Sushi-Sushi'. Haven't we come a long way? That day at the Emporium put my Mum & I on a food mission & instilled in us the intention of rushing back to Jimmy Grants the next time I was in town. So, months later with a heart full of optimism & a hungry belly my Mum & I rolled up at their new location at Eastland, ready to attack what we'd been talking for months about. Taking a seat outside in the sun, we very thoughtfully pondered the menu & ordered the only thing two obsessive foodies could; the biggest, meatiest offering on the menu. Between us we ordered the 'Eat Like A Greek' plate ($35) consisting of both 150g lamb & chicken, a side salad, dips & thick cut chips. Clearly, because we hadn't ordered enough food (eye-roll), we also ordered the 'Steamy Jimmy Dimmy' ($10) to share. The food arrived at our table quickly & it was truly glorious to behold. Both plates beautifully put together, tempting us to dive in immediately. The Jimmy Dimmy was entirely different from any Dim Sim I've ever had. Served with olive oil & balsamic, the unusual condiments proving that this wasn't just any old run-of-the-mill Sim. While I enjoyed it (I've never met a Sim I didn't like), I did find the flavour profile confusing. That being said, I wouldn't necessarily say this was a negative. Rather, I would give this plate another go in the hopes of nutting out where the olive oil & balsamic play into heightening this dish. It can only be best described as, kind of like watching a David Lynch film that you didn't quite 'get' the first time around. I wanted to love this dish. The 'Eat Like A Greek Plate' on the other hand was a lovely dish to look at, but I personally felt that it lacked some of the necessary strong flavours that modern Greek food is renowned for. While it was tasty, in any sense the lamb seemed to be missing that certain punch that I've come to expect from a hearty plate of slow cooked lamb. While there was a level of disappointment, I certainly enjoyed many aspects of my meal here at Jimmy's; It's left me with a strong desire to return. While I would make some different menu choices next time, I do believe they're onto a winning formula & feel certain that their small empire here in Melbourne will continue to grow.

The saganaki was crumbed and deep fried which made it a little oily, but the taste combined with the fig sauce was delicious. Certainly worth trying! We had their souvlaki's and they were certainly not your 3:00am after the pub souvlaki. The pita was thick and fresh, the meats were perfectly seasoned and one even came stuffed with chips which was an interesting concept when you're expecting them as a side dish. We really enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to friends. The Centre Square area at Eastland is a lovely spot which will be a hive of activity in the summer months. Eastland have done a wonderful job of showcasing a range of food choices and Jimmy Grants is worth a look.
