Veg croquette and red bean paste inside dough dessert
    Michelle G.

I live in Chicago and don't have a car but I truly think I would consider trekking out here via CTA and PACE to come back here. I am lowkey obsessed with this place. The food is delicious and the vibes are immaculate - it seems like such a cute spot to go after school (maybe it's because there was a kid, possibly related to the owner doing homework while snacking at a table) and it is just really cute and cozy inside. Plus the person who was at the counter where I ordered had very kind vibes and it was soooo cozy. My mom also loved it. To the food - we ordered a meat croquette, veggie croquette, saba shio bento with aji fry, oyakodon, and a battery dough dessert that looks a little like a wheel pie with red bean inside. Everything was good, like so yummy and nourishing. I was a bit stressed that day and not in the best mood when we got there but this food cheered me right up. My highlights (aka the things I would come back for, although I am curious about the rest of their menu) were the oyakodon, veggie croquette, bento sides, and the red bean dough dessert. The oyakodon was so nourishing and cozy and perfect. Such a good comfort food. The veggie croquette surprised me but I really liked the flavor combo, better than the meat croquette. The things that came with the bento were soooo yummy (I did not know what they were lol and did not ask) but it would be the reason I would get a bento again. And the batter dough dessert was exactly what I thought it would be when I saw it on the menu. Yum. May this place thrive forever.

    Gyu Don(Large) with Miso Soup

I tried Sozai Benzai restaurant for the first time tonight for dinner - it was pretty good. It's a small restaurant where you can dine in or takeout, the service was fine. The Gyu Don was pretty good - however, it needed more flavor so add a bit of soy sauce and siracha and then you're good to go. Spicy Stamina Ramen was pretty good - but it's really not spicy, maybe I have a higher tolerance level for spice. Overall, a nice place to eat at for a quicker and affordable Japanese meal.

Overall, good food for decent price and quick service. Would not be a go-to, but if I was in the area for a quick bite, I'd consider returning. Hard to find location. Tucked away in a small strip mall. Photos of the sign are old, so posting an updated sign to see. No greeting when we walked through the door, no servers? We ordered through the toasttab app. I'm sure it makes sense financially, but it was jarring since we were expecting a sit down restaurant. Then the bill recommends a tip, but like, who is it going to then?! Atmosphere: Cafe-like. Upbeat Japanese music in the background. Service: very fast and friendly. Food quality: Teriyaki sauce is a little bland and thin, but I think that's more authentic Japanese. Husband disagrees. -spicy stamina ramen had raw veggies instead of boiled veggies like I'm used to. I had to pick them out. Otherwise, I added an egg and Chashu which were very good. Noodles perfect for my liking, fresh, firm and chewy. -bento boxes were very good to my taste buds, but not so much for my kids. -potato croquette with pork -my favorite dish here

Want a good place for some ramen? This is definitely a place to look at... Ambiance The place is nicely lit. The chairs and tables seem similar to chairs and tables you would see more at a fast food place than a fine dining, but it fits the aesthetic of the restaurant. It think everything was written Japanese but the guy who works for he counter (he might have been the cook as well) can help you. Also, there are a lot of pictures, so you can point to what you would like. Service I think this is more towards a eat and go type establishment. You go to the counter order your food then sit down till it is ready. They call you up and you get it. Afterwards you bring your tray to the disposal area. It is clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. Food Katsu don I have never had katsu don before. It is a rice dish with a pork cutlet and egg on top. The taste has a slightly sweet taste. The rice is there to regulate the sweetness and also has a fried pork cutlet, which gives some texture. This dish does not seem like it should wait to be eaten since the cutlet does get soggy if eaten later. Takoyaki The takoyaki had a nice taste to it. Sometimes Benito flakes give off a petrol-like smell/taste, but these did not really have them. Ramen They had different types of ramen when we went. The one I ordered was a tonkatsu ramen. It had a rich pork broth with pieces of pork. The noodles had a nice toothy texture where it had some firmness to noodles but not where they were underdone. The other accompaniments gave the ramen different dimensions, I.e. the pickled ginger gave a slight sourness to it. Tsukemen ramen My brother got the tsukemen ramen. Tsukemen is a dipping ramen where the noodles are separated from the soup. It smelled nice and my brother seemed to have enjoyed the taste. Chicken wings... These wings were ordered by accident. We did not have any intentions of getting them. For the most part, they were crispy and had a sauce similar to buffalo hot sauce in it. Other then that, it wasn't bad but not really something I would order again. Overall The restaurant is nice and definitely a place to go if you want ramen. I would say that the other customer were all Japanese and kept looking at me and my brother funny, but that might be just paranoia...

As one of the few Asian restaurants that open on Sundays and through the entire afternoon, Sozai Banzai is located in a pretty hidden strip mall plaza that's easy to miss especially coming from the southeast. Garlic Ramen-- the flavor was really good, but pretty dark because of the roasted garlic (so can be a bit bitter to some people) and was more oily than I'd preferred. I loved the thickness of the noodles, it was bouncy and chewy. The surprising part is that the pork is all lean meat (no fat or skin) but still somehow really tender, but the meat is definitely on the smaller side and they only give one slice. The egg I thought was done well, gel-like yoke, but the brown color and marinade flavor is on the lighter side and they only give you half an egg. Not a lot of toppings, so just scallion and very few bamboo shoots, but the bamboo shoots is really good flavor, not overpowering on sweet or acid flavors. Kyushu Style Tonkotsu Ramen-- the broth base has umami and seafood-like flavor profile, creamy and not as oily. The red sweet shredded ginger adds a nice contrast to the broth and paired well with the thin noodles. Same comment as garlic ramen for egg and pork. Like others have mentioned, the portion sizes are definitely smaller than other places for the price and have way fewer toppings, but everything seemed to be made with care and quality. Would come back to try other options!

    Serving Japanese comfort food

This is one of those spots where it's consistently consistent. I have never had a bad meal here and they're consistently serving the same quality food and flavors. I really enjoyed their potato croquettes and usually have this to start or an order of their gyoza. My go to dish here is their katsu curry. It's such a feel good comfort food dish with abundant curry sauce and lots of pork Katsu. I usually order a regular (not a large) and even that's a generous serving. They also have gyudon which isn't something a lot of places offer as well as udon and ramen. They post their specials on their social media and have purposely don't detours to have the daily special. Give this spot a try. It doesn't look like much on the outside but they have some of the best Japanese food in town.

First time here with my Japanese friend. The customer service was phenomenal as well as the food. Great price too. Definitely come here again

I was checking out Sozai Banzai on Yelp because I knew that I would be in the area. The food looked pretty good and then I came across one of my old pics. What?? I've already been here?? If my first visit was forgettable, why was that the case - I dunno??, so I went back to give them another try. You order at the counter and there are only a few tables due to restrictions. Not too many diners but a whole lotta people (Grub Hub, Door Dash) coming in to pick -up. In fact, be careful in the parking lot, some people are in a hurry to get their food - and not necessarily driving carefully. As for the food, the gyoza was fine and my Tonkotsu with extra pork belly was very good. I really enjoyed the porky broth, the flavors really came through. The bento box was ok - I ordered grilled mackerel but it came out fried. The service is minimal due to one guy managing the register, preparing the food (for both dine in and pick up) and for cleaning tables. I ended up going back to my car for a bottle of water, I couldn't wait any longer. So, the food was fine and I would consider this place as primarily a pick-up spot. Ahhh...I guess I know why I had forgotten about my first visit.

    Ebi Fry Curry Regular
    Brittney H.

My bf and I wanted an authentic Japanese restaurant with a wide variety of options (not just ramen) and Sozai Bonzai popped up on our radar! You know the place is good when it's primarily people from Japan eating there. The place is fairly small but clean. You order and pay at the counter and wait for your food to be made! You can also order online as well from your table by scanning the QR code posted on the table. We ordered Sapporo Reserve, Coke, Gyoza, Corn Miso Butter Ramen, and a regular sized portion of the Ebi Fry Curry. Everything was lovely! The ramen was probably some of the best I've ever had outside of japan. The broth was phenomenal. The fried shrimp was super crispy and fresh and I loved the pickles that came on the side with my curry. I even requested extra, which they kindly accommodated! Our dinner came out to around $55, which isn't bad for two drinks, an appetizer, and two dinner entrees. I would definitely visit this restaurant in the future if I am in the area again! Thank you for a lovely dinner, Sozai Bonzai! Gochisosama deshita!

Authentic, homestyle Japanese place! We've been coming here for about five years and never disappoint. The restaurant is small and semi self service - so if you are looking for a typical Japanese dining experience, this isn't the place for you. It's a place that you go as a regular, a place you go whenever you can't figure out what's for dinner, a place feels familiar and warm. Personally I love almost all the food there and usually order whatever I'm in the mood for - they have a good variety of rice, noodle and bento. If you want to try their daily special, better come for lunch because they sell out quickly. Price is affordable and excellent for the food quality.

    Kitsune Udon (R)

Cute, clean, modern-looking Japanese restaurant in a small shopping plaza. We went on Sunday around noon and there were a couple of tables occupied at the time. Overall, the service was great and food was delicious (and authentic). I ordered kitsune udon that had two pieces of kitsune and a small piece of fishcake. Although sparse on ingredients and simple, the broth was flavorful and the dish overall was satisfying. I also had an eggplant appetizer that was good but was slightly watered-down. My husband had katsudon and said it was amazing and one of the best he's had. This came with a bowl of miso soup. Because of the service, reasonable prices and the vast menu, I'm definitely going back to try other items on their menu.

There's also discrepancy in their menu and what they actually have available as it seems they also display items for the the cafe next door. We happened to arrive during happy hour so some menu items were discounted. They also have a complimentary salad bar. We ordered chicken karaage, potstickers, salmon avocado sushi, and I had the katsu sandwich. All the food items we ordered came separately over a span of 20+ minutes, with the sandwich arriving last and cold. Not only did the sandwich come on a cold sourdough bread, the meat also had an unusual texture and so I ended up throwing it out. The other items we ordered were lacking in flavor. The chicken karaage was prepared well but it had no flavor. I'm regret spending money at this establishment.

So we got out of the car and saw someone pull up in front of the restaurant and jump out at 11:59. As soon as the door was unlocked at 12pm, this customer went in, and a few others after them. This is a small joint, and it was already half full by the time we ordered, then sat down (they told us the table at which to sit). I didn't know, but asked, and found out that a salad bar and miso soup are also included. The salad bar was pretty decent, with fresh vegs. They even had French fried onions (my guilty pleasure) and a very good House dressing (ginger vinaigrette). The portions are enormous. The couple next to us got ramen, and it was practically overflowing. We ordered takoyaki (too much food, we didn't need). I had the Pork Katsu bowl and my companion had a Katsu curry. I wished I had ordered the curry -- it looked dark and rich and thick like pudding (not like a boxed curry). They also gave us a bonus piece of chicken karaage which was so large and crispy. I think I'll get the curry next time, or the ramen. We originally came because we were going to get a karaage sando, but get the curry.

Not only is there a food court of different Japanese restaurants to try, there is also a grocery store, bakery, bookstore, and stores that sell ice cream, traditional desserts, as well as crepes and boba tea! My family and I visit here often every year and we like to try the different foods and desserts and then check out the bookstore and grocery store afterwards. My favorite foods so far have been the beef udon soup with a soft boiled egg, shrimp and vegetable tempura, miso soup, and Japanese curry with rice, beef, and vegetables (carrots and potatoes). My son always gets the chicken and beef on a stick and my daughter usually gets a garlic pork dish with white rice but I forget what this dish is called. My husband also enjoys the beef udon soup like I do. I swear that whenever my food is finished, I am legit sad! The crepes are good, there is a variety of boba teas to try, and the ice creams are delicious! Lychee has been my favorite so far but I have yet to try the matcha, red bean, among others! You can get a small sample of different ice cream flavors too, which is nice! I sampled the red bean flavor so that will be my go-to next time! At the grocery store, I love buying Happy Turn snacks which are like a sweet and salty crunchy cracker (maybe it is made of rice?) that are individually wrapped and mochi from the fridge area. Finally, I usually like to buy mochi from the store right next to the bookstore. The mochi from this location is the best! I usually buy multiple flavors to take home and eat at a later time! You must try these! My kids love checking out the bookstore and they usually pick something out for me to buy for them - whether it is a book, keychain, etc. There are magazines, anime figurines, soft plushy toys, pens, and stationary, etc. It is interesting to browse through the things they have there! You cannot bring food or drinks inside but they do have a shelf at the entrance where you can place your drink there if you like. The first time visiting here, the majority of the customers were Asians and as the years have passed, there is now more of an influx of non-Asians who simply love the food and appreciate the culture, which I think is neat! The first time I visited here was with my college roommate who was from Japan and she recommended this place back in 2009 perhaps? I have been visiting ever since with my family. We travel more than an hour from Wisconsin to come here but it is 100% worth the drive! Also, the cashiers and workers there are quick, efficient, and friendly. I have even been able to practice a few of the Japanese phrases I have learned with a couple of the cashiers too (I asked if they spoke Japanese first)! Overall, Mitsuwa is my happy place! Great food, interesting finds, different culture, and everyone there looks excited to be there. This is as close to visiting Japan as I can get until I keep learning more Japanese and save up enough money to go visit Japan someday! This is my dream! In the meantime, we will keep visiting Mitsuwa!

Our last stop before making the drive back home to St. Louis was Mitsuwa Marketplace, and honestly,…read moreit felt like the perfect way to wrap up our quick Chicago getaway. We arrived right around lunchtime, and to our pleasant surprise, the food court wasn't nearly as packed as it had been during our previous visit. That alone already set the tone for a relaxed, enjoyable meal. Mitsuwa has this unmistakable charm the moment you walk in. It's more than just a food court, it's a little pocket of Japan tucked inside the city. The layout, the décor, the storefronts, the aromas drifting from every direction... everything works together to give you that authentic Japanese marketplace vibe. You can wander around and see different restaurants offering ramen, curry, donburi, tempura, pastries, and more. It's the kind of place where you could easily spend an hour just deciding what to eat. Today, though, we already knew where we were headed: Tokyo Shokudo. It's become one of our favorites inside Mitsuwa, and after walking around the streets of Chicago all morning, we were more than ready for a comforting, satisfying meal. We each picked something different from the menu. My wife went with #1, my younger one chose #23, and my older kid ordered #32. I decided on #38, which comes with that beautifully fluffy omelette draped over rice, simple, comforting, and exactly what I was craving. Since everything at Tokyo Shokudo is prepared fresh after you order, there's this anticipation that builds as you wait, knowing your food is being cooked right then and there. And when the dishes came out, steaming and vibrant, it was clear the wait was worth it. Every plate hit the spot. You could taste the freshness in each bite, and after a morning of walking, the portions were just right to refuel us for the trip home. The kids enjoyed their meals, my wife loved hers, and that fluffy omelette on mine was the highlight I didn't know I needed. It was one of those meals where everyone at the table is quietly happy, focused on their food, and occasionally nodding at each other because everything just tastes that good. Tokyo Shokudo delivered once again, and this visit only confirmed that we'll definitely be coming back the next time we're in Chicago.

Very homey, decent comfort Japanese food for sale here…read more My beef curry dish was very tasty and came out piping hot. The beef was soft and flavorful, and the omelette egg was the perfect addition to balance out the meal; I didn't care too much for the hardboiled egg, it was a tad overcooked. Ordering is very easy; you order at the stall and receive a number, which will be called when your order is ready for pick up. All the utensils and accompaniments are readily available on the counter at pick up, otherwise you can ask for (to go boxes etc) from the staff. The jumbo prawn tempura was very crispy and delicious and came with a lemon wedge and yummy tartar sauce. There are plenty of places to sit, although some of the tables were wobbly so be sure to check the tables before sitting down/placing your food on the tables.

Definitely worth coming here in addition to Mitsuwa - they are physically a smaller store, but…read morerecently reopened to a location next to the old one due to renovations and it is just as clean, variety just as fresh, and sales are just as good. I prefer going here for the fresh cuts of various sushi fish and other seafood as they import from way more places than other Japanese grocery stores and at fair prices. The snack selection here is also unique and they have a great frozen food selection. The food court is on my list for next time as I hear it's also incredibly fresh and the staff are really knowledgable about the sushi and other menu items they serve and it's always busy on the weekends from what I used to see. Parking lot available.

If you're looking for quick eats while doing some Asian grocery shopping, it's definitely worth checking out. One thing I really like is that finding a table isn't difficult. They have a separate dining hall with plenty of long tables and seating, plus a free-refill miso soup station and a water station for convenience. Pricing here is noticeably lower compared to Hmart. The udon noodle soup is a family favorite, especially for our kids and moms. At Hmart, a bowl of this would run about $15-16 but here for $12.50, you get a generous bowl plus a side like two egg rolls or gyoza, and a small miso soup bowl with seaweed and tofu (you can refill the miso soup at the station). If you skip the side, you save about $1. The Godzilla roll is also a great deal--eight large pieces for about $14. My oldest loved it and was completely full from the sushi. They also offer poke bowls and chicken teriyaki rice plates, which my husband ordered during our visit. My only gripe is that many of the dishes tend to be on the salty side--they could definitely tone that down. Our udon broth tasted good, but we ended up adding some water to dilute it. They also offer discounted cooked hot and cold items--sometimes 30% to 50% off--after the dinner rush (probably after 7 PM). I picked up a large container kimchi pork soup to go for under $5 but it was also quite salty so I took most of it home, added more water and it was perfect as leftovers next day. Ordering is simple: you select your items and pay at a kiosk, enter your buzzer number, and it will vibrate when your food is ready for pickup at the counter. Eating inside a grocery store has its perks--you can grab extra snacks or drinks to customize your meal, and then browse the store afterward. Our moms and kids always enjoy coming here with us--it's definitely more fun for them than a typical grocery run. Overall, prices are reasonable and they run good deals. It's smaller than H Mart, so there are fewer options, but if you prefer a less crowded and more relaxed environment, you might actually like Tensuke better.
