While in Karlovy Vary, I wanted to visit the Grand Hotel Pupp…read more The Grandhotel Pupp was a major location for the 2006 movie Last Holiday starring Queen Latifah.....a great movie that I love to watch all the time!...... It also appears in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale as Hotel Splendide in Montenegro. It has been cited as inspiration for the Grand Budapest Hotel in the movie of the same name. So this landmark, being as beautiful as it is from the outside had very reasonable rates (I checked online for a future visit)...on a good day, regular rooms can be had for about $150/night. Not bad for the hotel that hosts the annual Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Wow wow wow, I've stayed at quite a few hotels at this point of my life, but this was honestly one…read moreof the best experiences I've had (the other one being a hot spring resort in Costa Rica). Karlovy Vary is one of the three cities that make up the Bohemian Spa Triangle in west Czech Republic, so if you are planning to stay a night or two at Karlovy Vary, you definitely need to book a hotel that comes with spa and sauna. Hotel Carlsbad Plaza is known for this and the booking should automatically get you access to their spa/sauna (though all the procedures, medical treatments, and doctors' consultations will cost extra). We were immediately greeted by a staff who offered to take our luggage, followed by an offer for glass of juice or wine. Afterwards, a kind lady also showed us where our room is. This is helpful if you have a room at the 5th floor or above because floors 5-8 is a new building and require a different elevator once you get to floor 4 from the lobby. The room was VERY spacious. Extremely nice view during the fall season especially. Bathroom comes with very nice shampoo and body wash. They provide with you bath robes that you can wear to the spa/sauna. They also provide you with fresh fruits when you first get to your room, which was on the hotel. There is always someone who comes in late afternoon to remake your bed and drop off some chocolate unless you opt out. Overall, service here was 5/5 impeccable. Their sauna was amazing! They have multiple sauna rooms, each with a slightly different temperature. They have a steam room as well. We spent about 1.5 hours trying out all the rooms and by the time you are done, you feel like you have just ran a marathon without actually running it. This is the best way to get runner's high without running. Their breakfast is from 7AM-10AM. Absolutely amazing! Extremely wide selection of food. Their omelettes and fried eggs are to die for. Their tea station is solid. They have actual fresh tea leaves and you package it into your own tea bag before you place it into your own pot. Honestly, the thing I missed the most about was the breakfast here. In all honesty, this hotel definitely had the best breakfast I've ever had out of all the hotels I've stayed at so far. It is also located very conveniently. Karlovy Vary is not a big city. Its main town is basically one long street. This hotel just so happens to be located at the end of the street and you can easily walk to the other end in 15-20 minutes while tasting all the hot spring waters along the way.

To be completely honest this hotel feels like someone crammed all the must-haves of a 5 star hotel…read morewithout paying attention to design, condition, quality etc. All together, hotel has a large number of accommodations, spa, pool, medicinal procedures, however it feels more like a hospital than it does a hotel. The entire place feels run down and highly out of date. It felt like I was staying in an old soviet sanatorium rather than a nice hotel. In terms of food, it was mostly cold, and the choices in the buffet are quite bland. As for the positives, the gym was incredible. Fully accommodated fitness center no different to one that you pay much more money for. Very good deal for this one in my opinion. Overall, I'd only recommend this hotel for the gym, however it's open to visitors who aren't hotel guests for a small fee. (I stayed in Oct. 2024 and am writing this review a few months later so please consider this before taking my review into account)
Understand that I really like this place and want to see it do well. The rooms are huge, and while…read morenormally that isn't a complaint, you feel like the room is a missed opportunity which could be fixed by a mild upgrade. The service needs a slight overhaul in that the systems don't seem clear and the staff seem a little disjointed. The front desk staff could provide concierge level information in the absence of an actual concierge desk and easily direct the doorman on expectations regarding the car and parking. The valet service could be more direct on how the system will work so that the cars don't back up on the hill entrance to the hotel. And the pool attendant could be more helpful and learn only the needed english to be customer service friendly. Since she was combative, tons of patrons seemed lost rather than going to her. And if there is something that is stated to be offered in the room like a gift from one of the hotel's stores, then it should also be left at the desk for when they are closed. Because of the old world charm of the hotel and the truly huge advantage for upgrade to this off the path location, I hope they improve in some key areas which stands to make this a great place to visit.

A meal like this, in this grandeur ambience, would cost a lot more in America or Western Europe. Service was exceptional, professional, and genuinely friendly.
