Though not the cheapest of instruments, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of both new and second hand saxes in this very tradional music shop, as well as the option to rent. Even if you don't fancy shelling out vast ammounts for a new musical toy, they have sheet music and accessories to keep you entertained. The staff are knowledgable and can help you with all sorts of advice you may be seeking.

A column of beautiful harmonicas and flutes adorns one wall and some more percussion in another. As you approach the till expect boxes and pots of plectrums and tuners, straps and clasps. The cashier himself is music personified every part an extra stumbled in from Wayne's World. The Music Room is everything that you would it expect it to be and a little more.

They have a really good selection of instruments, and not just violins. The best thing about this shop is the staff. So when we went on a trip around Bristol, our first port of call was Cremona House Violin Shop. In all honesty, I don't have the first clue about violins but I have it on good authority that these were among the best (or 'the Bentley of violins' to be precise). The sales assistants were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and put a novice like me at ease. The prices reflect the quality, so it's not a shop for time wasters but it's certainly a shopping experience not to be missed.

Then there's the maddening buzzer system, where you have to press a bell and wait to be buzzed in by a member of staff (something that would drive me crazy if I worked there). Furthermore, on this last bit, I've never seen anyone get refused entry, so what's the point of it? When you finally get inside, there's a fairly decent range of guitars, but they're all priced highly, even if they're second-hand models (and I know the mark up is huge, because the boss offers pitiful payments for goods coming in, whilst spouting some bull about electric safety certificates and the like). The counter has a poor selection of strings and pedals (although there is the odd Electro-Harmix number that's been fleeced off someone if you're lucky), whilst it also operates as a workshop for repairs of all kinds. I've never been in for repairs before, but I'm guessing it'll be just as highly priced as the stock. There are better places to go for all things axe-related.

But if you want to go somewhere where the staff, and particularly the owner himself, care about helping you find the right guitar or bit of kit for you with a good deal, then go to Rikaxxe. And by the way Craig, the buzzer system is in place for when the staff are out back in the workshop, obviously.

The best thing about the place, aside from: Marshall amps, Fender guitars, PA hire from a tenner a night, part exchange and repairs... ...is the eccentric rocker that runs the joint. He's helpful to the last and will replace strings for free. He even made a very successful minor repair to our gee-tar in exchange for a Kit Kat Chunky. Now that's what I call good business.

It's a wonderful place to browse around because there are so many unusual and beautiful instruments to look at, from mandolins and banjos to harps and fiddles. Manager Cris Pierssene is clearly passionate about the instruments he stocks, and all the staff are involved in folk music in some way or other. Shoppers can try out and compare acoustic, folk, celtic and world musical instruments before they buy. You can also look at the stock of used musical instruments if you're a beginner on a tighter budget, or if you would rather buy a vintage or antique instruments.
