We arrived in the evening, and the whole area was still bustling, it genuinely felt like the city was alive around us. There's something about seeing a landmark like this lit up and full of energy after dark that hits differently than the daytime crowds you always hear about. The panoramic views from the top were beautiful. Even with the chill in the air, it was worth the climb just to take in that view over the city. I get why this place is so popular, there's a certain magic to it that photos don't quite capture. My only regret is not having more time to just sit at the fountain and take it all in, soaking up the atmosphere instead of rushing off to the next stop. Next time in Rome, we'll definitely return here again to get some more day time photos read more

With the planters of flowers leading to the church and old buildings on the sides, it looks picturesque. The 135 steps had some landings along the way. Fortunately, in spite of the tourists, there was some room to walk on the stairs although it would be nicer if people moved to the side instead of just stopping and standing on the stairs or in the middle of a landing. Other than saying you climbed the steps, I wasn't sure of the big attraction. The view from the top was okay but not a panoramic view of the city. Go to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Vittoriano monument for a fantastic view of Rome. Much higher climb but it is also offers a free view from the balconies including the Colosseum. read more

When I was going to architecture school, I was so enamored with the Spanish Steps. So every chance I get to go to Rome, this is a must stop for me. It's very iconic how the steps and the piazza. While you can't sit on the steps, you can pause and admire the view. The area around the Spanish Steps has high end fashion houses, so I can only imagine that during Fashion Week there must be all kind of activity in the area. Come here for the views and the atmosphere. I will return here again the next time I am in Rome. read more

My boyfriend and I walked over to the Spanish Steps from the Trevi Fountain. Located in the Piazza di Spagna, this is how the steps got its' name - the Spanish Steps. These 135 steps staircase connect the Spanish Square at the bottom with the Trinita dei Monti church at the top. It is a masterpiece of the Baroque design, emphasizing theatricality and grandeur. In layman's terms... she THICK! Since the 18th century, these steps have long been a gathering place for locals, tourists, artists, and writers. Lovers would even meet up here for their romantic rendezvous. Oh la la! Sadly in person some of the grandeur is taken away by the crowd. I even saw some folks sitting on the stairs, which is not allowed!! Please be respectful of the cultural landmarks. Unfortunately, a bit underwhelming but it's one of those things they recommend you check out when in Rome. For us it was one of those things where you see it and move on. Another one off of my list of things to do in Rome. I got here between 7:30 and 8am. There was not too many people out thankfully. The monumental stairway of 135 steps is linked with the Trinità dei Monti church, under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France, at the top of the steps and the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See in the Palazzo Monaldeschi at the bottom of the steps. Composed of 12 ramps and 135 travertine steps, its Italian name is "Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti," but we know it in English by the Spanish Steps. It is only because the Spanish Embassy moved onto the square in the 17th century, creating a religious and tangible connection from Piazza di Spagna to the church and ultimately inheriting the name. The steps were commissioned by a French diplomat named Étienne Gueffier and constructed between 1723 and 1725 by Italian architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi. It is considered the widest and longest staircase in Europe. New regulations set in 2019 made it illegal to sit on the steps. The fines for people that sit, lie down, or dirty the steps go up to 400 euros, with municipal police officers guarding the staircase to prevent anyone from violating the regulation. The Spanish Steps are definitely one of those classic Rome landmarks one has to see at least once. It was crowded with the energy around the area vibrant with artists when my partner, our friends, family member, and I went mid-September, but that's expected. An awesome view awaits at the top. The fountain at the bottom is truly unique, where one can get water from it ! Too many people take the magic away for their social media; they stand there taking too many photos in one spot. The Spanish Steps are absolutely breathtaking!! The Spanish Steps connect the Piazza di Spagna below with the stunning Trinità dei Monti church above. The Trinità dei Monti is worth a visit when you're here, it's full of history, artwork and phenomenal statues. The area around the Spanish Steps are chock full of fabulous restaurants and high end shops. The views from the top after climbing the 135 steps are glorious. You can see the Spanish embassy in the square below from the terraces above. We ate at a local Trattoria that did not disappoint. It has became a cultural hub for artists, writers and royalty. A luxury shopping landmark, and a quintessential symbol of Roman glamour, culture, and social life. I've been before and will come back. Such a sight to see and I LOVE Italy!! read more

When I was in town for the Rome Marathon, I came here to check out these steps. At the top was the Trinità dei Monti. While it's a must see landmark, I must say that it was a one and done kind of attraction. I took the obligatory photos and a selfie, but I don't think that I would ever need to come back for another visit. Having said that, be prepared for crowds. One of the must see sites of any trip to Rome. The Spanish steps are an easy train ride or walk from anywhere in Rome. At the bottom of the steps is a huge courtyard with a large variety of shops and eateries. There are street vendors and performers all over the square. One of my favorite snacks in Europe is roasted chestnuts, which are common snacks in the region. The view from the top is amazing and well worth the climb! read more

Finally after our 5th trip to Rome, we came during the end of April, for when the Spanish Steps are full of beautiful flowers . First time able to view and take in the beauty with all the flowers. A must stop and visit to take in all the beauty when the flowers are all covered on the steps. The tradition of planting azaleas in Piazza di Spagna dates back to the 18th century when the Spanish Steps and the square were designed. Azaleas were chosen for the square because they are easy to grow, can withstand urban pollution, and provide a spectacular display of color. read more

Started in 1723 and finished in 1726, these marble steps remain a testament to the building style of the 18th century architects. It is a famous tourist attraction that is now, as of 2019, illegal to stop and sit on, although when we visited, many people were sitting, either resting or just enjoying the sunshine and beautiful day. The steps lead to the Trinità dei Monti church, which is very beautiful inside. The steps are so named because desending the stairs lead to the former site of the Spanish embassy. We stayed near the Spanish Steps on our trip to Rome, and it was the first attraction we sought out after checking into our hotel. We didn't have to do this, as it turns out, as we ended up at or near the Spanish Steps a few more times during our week in town. It's kind of in the middle of things, almost hard to avoid if you're a tourist doing tourist things. That said, it was a great place to kick off a week of Roman sightseeing. Pleasantly busy but not overcrowded in the off-season (highly recommend Rome in November), lots of tourists, of course, but pretty manageable even with people stopping for pictures on many of the 135 steps. The steps connected the Piazza di Spagna to the Piazza Trinità dei Monti--a giant fountain at the bottom, a giant church on top, very Rome all around. They were constructed between 1723 and 1725, new by local standards, though older than, say, America. The obelisk in front of the church is also newer than the eight ancient Egyptian obelisks in Rome. It is merely ancient Roman, a copy of the obelisk in the Piazza del Popolo, made in the 3rd century under the emperor Aurelian. The climb was easy and enjoyable, with a fantastic view from the top. We could see the Piazza di Spagna and the long ribbon of Via de Condotti, bustling with pedestrians. A lovely introduction to Rome's particular brand of urban beauty. If you're visiting Rome, my guess is you'll wind up at the Spanish Steps at some point during your trip. Take the time to climb them and admire the spectacular view. read more

We visited the Spanish Steps and really enjoyed exploring the area around. The area is full of tourists but there's still space to enjoy it. There's people sitting on steps and just enjoying the views and also people taking pictures. Going all the way to bottom is worth it to get the entire view. read more

Such a beautiful Basilica! This one rivals some of the grand, ornate Basilicas we visited in Spain and Marseille. Getting in was simple and quick, they do have metal detectors and security to walk through before getting to the main entrance, but that was quick. Once inside, the ceilings were notably impressive. The Spanish Steps are a nice place to visit on a walking tour of Rome. Most notable to me is on the right side at the base, is the house where the English poet John Keats lived and died. It's now a museum dedicated to his life. We did not tour the Keats museum. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 25 - that's young! I studied his odes in college and love his famous quotes: "Beauty is truth, truth beauty that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." Another good one is "Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter." The Spanish Steps are comprised of 138 steps, rising up a steep slope connecting the Piazza di Spagna at the base with the Piazza Trinità dei Monti and the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. The Spanish Steps were featured in 1950s film "Roman Holiday," starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Audrey's and Gregory's characters shared an ice cream on the steps. The Spanish Steps were also featured in the film version of the "Talented Mr. Ripley" which starred Matt Damon. The Spanish Steps are a nice place to visit, you'll see street artists painting models, enjoy Azaleas when in season, and will have an assortment of folks to people watch. This is a very popular spot to visit when in Rome. You need to either go really early or really late to get a photo with limited amount of people in the background. I had to Google why this spot was so popular as I had no clue why so many people visit stairs lol. It turns out that this is the longest and widest staircase in Europe. They also connect the French Church of Santa Trinità dei Monti to the square below. It's easy to find as they are literally where a metro stop is located. The first time I visited, there was a marathon going on so it was extremely busy. One had to detour to a safe space to cross the marathon route to see it. It was quite an experience with all the marathon participants, tourists and locals. I wasn't able to cross so I had a €10 espresso across the street to appreciate the steps. Eventually they did let people cross the marathon path so I briefly checked it out with all those who waited to walk on the steps. Since I'm usually up early, on one of the last days we were in Rome, I decided to check it out again since the fountain was covered up for the marathon. It was practically empty so I took a moment to appreciate the landmark. That was a mistake lol. I should have snapped photos first then appreciate it because people just started coming after a few minutes of appreciating the moment. It was still significantly less busy than my first visit so it's ok. They do ask you not to sit on the steps but tons of people do it. This historic landmark was another stop on our sightseeing bus itinerary. Since the Spanish Steps are an iconic landmark, it is a must-see attraction. We didn't do much here other than take in the views, take pictures, and walk around. Though it was a sight to see, we did not spend a lot of time here before moving on to the next attraction. Like many of the designated stops on the bus tour, we walked to other areas on foot because some hidden gems were not on the tour schedule. The Spanish Steps had quite the crowd as it is also the area for luxury shopping. Designer brands we have learned to love without paying any taxes. Been to Rome some times. Finally made it to the Spanish Steps this time. Or in Italian: the Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti. The famous stairs connect the Pincio hill and the underlying Piazza di Spagna. They were built between 1723 and 1726. It's a famous spot, so it's a pretty busy place. But if you got some time on your hands, you will get some nice pics at some point. The stairs are indeed pretty and a nice sight. But for me the highlight is found on the top of the stairs, the Piazza della Trinità dei Monti. From up there you get amazing city views. Was there just around sunset and the golden light over the city made it a magical view. Be aware that sitting on the stairs is not liked for obvious reasons. Security will remind you. They are quite present here. It's surely a great thing to visit and definitely a must to climb the stairs to enjoy the views. It's not that hard and quite a short distance to cover. Having the chance to discover the Spanish Steps is one of the many reasons why people fall in love with Rome. The name Spanish Steps comes from the fact that the area once housed the Spanish embassy. When you make it to the top of the stairs, you'll be at the grounds of a church which you can go in and view. If you plan to stay at the bottom of the steps you'll soon embark on some of the best luxury shopping in the city.
