The same bistro used to send me running out to the 10 til 10 to get Amaretto for the occasional late night regular who'd prop up the bar and regale us all with the week's gossip. So it has always been the place for me where you can get emergency alcohol. And there's a decent selection. I do miss the way it used to be with a wooden frame separating you from the drink and grubby windows which students and tramps alike pressed their noses against whilst picking their drink of choice. These days they're a lot more trusting and let you get the majority of stuff yourself, but then they've obviously come under new management too, if the gaudy new shop sign is anything to go by. This is a particular gem if you have a friend, or indeed if you are a friend, who lives around the area. In which case a few six packs of export strength lager and a bag of minstrels procured at just-above-supermarket prices mean that the party can keep on going long after the last orders at the Pilgrim has been rung. Oh hells yeah.

This Spar definitely has the most futuristic look about it with its glossy, glass-panelled and chrome finish on the exterior. I don't often shop at Spar because prices are generally expensive compared to competitive stores and of course it isn't really the place you'd go to do your weekly shopping; it's more of an emergency shop for locals and business folks nearby. Spar is located in a prime location for office workers in the area and has ideal products for people on-the-go. This makes it a great place to grab a quick lunch and newspaper or magazine. Let's say that this is your super mini-mart!

I think its open from 7am til late. There is also a cash machine in store too but it charges £1.50 for withdrawals.

It's the kind of overtly and comically monopolistic corporation you get in a sci-fi dystopia, except it's real. Stories of Tesco's ruthless campaign to eradicate every other business from the acreage of Britain can be found in local newspapers all across the nation. That comes as a given of course because to Tesco, everything is local. They've saturated every postcode in the country. However, the really infuriating thing about this particular branch, and what I assume is the crux of the whole problem, is that it's just so damn convenient. With its automatic check-outs and selection of handy goods, it's perfect for breezing in and out of but you'll hate yourself afterwards. People can whine on about how stinkingly evil the business is but so long as the remaining millions are flocking through the aisles, they're basically trying to shout down a hurricane. They should know by now the slogan 'Every Little Helps' doesn't apply to those who avoid Tesco.

It means if you just have a few bits to pick up you don't have to trek miles round a superstore just for those few bits. Even more conveniently, you don't even have to converse with the staff due to the self service checkouts. You can get your shopping, serve yourself and be away in no time at all. Another convenient thing, the store is open 6am-11pm 7 days a week so when the other stores close on Sunday around tea time, this Tesco Express stays open till late evening.

Mr B's Newsagents is fairly average in many respects but for some reason it has really stayed long…read morein my memory and is a place that I visit on regular occasions. It is on the whole a fairly standard newsagents but the service and quality inside really make it feel a little bit special. This place simply reminds me of an old style newsagents, well respected within the community and a place of trust and friendliness. The prices here are pretty good also and the fact that service always comes with a smile makes the experience all the better. On the whole a good solid establishment with great service, great convenience and good prices to boot.

Although this is smaller than the former unit across the way, I feel this store is easier to get in and around quicker, due to the more compact size, with the usual "Express" store layout. The prices were slightly higher than a usual store, at the end of the day you pay for convenience, some of the prices were just over 10% more compared to a regular Tesco store, a little annoying, but given the fact most people visiting here are only going to pick up a couple of items, it isn't too bad. I couldn't find all the items I was looking for, the selection in store was fine overall, but could be better, even for a store of its' size. I did have an issue using the self-service machine, where it would constantly ask me to remove the last item, and it never seemed to recognise the weight of the item being scanned, meaning I had to ask for staff approval after scanning every item. It is still a pretty new store, the layout and appearance of the store is nice enough and they do have a Costa Express coffee machine. The staff in the store seemed friendly enough, they were a little short-staffed but where isn't right now? 3* - OK, it doesn't really offer anything better than many of the nearby convenience stores but the store is fine and I would return.

It's easy to get as there is a ramp & automatic doors but it's very hard to get around the store with a pram & I can't imagine anyone in a wheelchair getting round there. They always have the aisles cluttered up with various stacks of beer/drinks/ baskets with special offers in. They have stuff really crammed in. The staff are nice but sometimes they are understaffed & there isn't a lot of room to que which makes it even harder to get around the store. They have some good offers on at times but normally the food is more expensive but it is a convenience store rather than somewhere you go for a full weeks shopping. They have a pay point machine, cash machine outside & a good selection of wines & also fair trade products.

So there I was at checkout fifteen with a full weeks shopping on the belt waiting for it to be…read morescanned by the very pre occupied checkout operator. The girl with the luminous red hair was deep in conversation with the customer she was serving and also the operator on the checkout opposite. I didnt like to break up the "love in" so I started to pack the first few items in the ONE bag the staff member had provided. The deep conversation continued and now took in the staff on the till further along and being typically British I did not like to interupt. Even when the Flame haired checkout girl completely ignored the fact that I had no more bags left. This is where I made my fatal mistake. I reached across and took a bag from the hook at the rear of the till and continued to pack. The flame haired ones head spun around in mid conversation about the latest "Jordan hairdo" or some such tripe and said....and I quote. "Where did you get that bag from" ? "From that hook" was my surprised reply. And the highly trained staff retorted..... "Don't you dare do that again. If you want bags, you ask for them, you dont just take them." !!! "And if I dont ask for them ? " I asked. "Well if you dont ask then I will take it that you have your own and you wont get any of mine......by the way do you want any school vouchers ?" I loaded the trolley without any more bags and left the shopping where it was with the checkout operator shouting after me .."I dont make the rules, it might be different if I did" I complained to the stores duty manager who seemed very out of her depth. A really embarrasing experience brought about due to the store employing sub standard staff. I now shop at the Tesco store in Formby...a better class of people there.

This is an excellent branch of Tesco, situated in the middle of Old Swan close to many large…read morebusinesses and schools. The car park here is massive. I don't think Ive ever seen people having any trouble getting a parking space. This shop is, in my opinion, laid out in a better way than some Tesco stores as it is all on one level. There is a large range of clothes for men, children and women. You can find everything from a basic t-shirt to a lovely dress for a night out. There is also a large range of electronics offering an affordable selection of items such as TVs, mp3 players and kitchen appliances. The main purpose of the store is obviously to provide food and drink and they certainly have a massive range in this branch and they have a huge range of options available for every item you can think of. They offer the cheap no frills versions and luxury versions, and everything else in between. There are a great many tills in this Tesco and the staff work quickly to ensure that if a queue gets too long they will open up another till whenever possible. There are also several self service tills available which are easy to understand and are excellent for when you have a few items and are in a hurry to leave the store. The staff in this branch are very friendly. It is always easy to find someone if you need help and they are always quick to help and give service with a smile. Despite having another Tesco branch closer to my house it is not as good as this branch and I go here whenever possible. It is a friendly place which allows an enjoyable hassle free shopping experience.
