One of my favorite places on earth and the most romantic of the cascade lakes. The road to get in is pretty bumpy but so worth it. There's nice walk trails around the lake, camp sites, lake access, cute animals and an unforgettable Mountain View.

We exited off the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway onto a gravel road that led us to the Ray Atkenson Memorial trail and Sparks Lake. There were several campers and fisherman along the road which terminated at a parking lot with access directly to the lake for kayakers. A universally accessible trail leads directly to the lake, but we took the longer section that went through the forest and ultimately led us back to the lakeside. Along the say we enjoyed the views offered of the pristine lake, marsh and meadow as well as South Sister and Broken Top mountains.

One of my most favorite spots to take portraits.Photographed an elopement here, summer 2019 and engagement session, winter 2019. The winter session we were able to stand on one part of the lake because it was iced over. As the photographer, I didn't encourage it BUT secretly I was overjoyed that they did that one on their own! Shallow, muddy, not a good lake to swim or stand up board. Rough terrain getting to parking area.

For years I have heard great things about this lake and not once felt tempted to check it out. That is until I drove out here with a kayak for the first time. This is the first Cascade Lake that you see when you drive in from Bend. It looks like a shallow marsh from the road, but when you get out onto the water you soon realize that this lake has many hidden secrets to amaze you! The first time I camped out here I got real bored real quick, so I took off toward the lake to explore. I found this random little creek that looked like fun to kayak. When launched off into the creek I was soon surprised by how unbelievably fast it was. The creek is literally fresh off the mountains very cold and depending on the time of year you are out, very swift. The little creek has many bends that keep you on your toes. You will want to be paying attention because if you don't, your kayak might get pinned and through you into the creek. This little creek is a blast but should be traveled cautiously as you can get pinned in debris if there happen to be any. I recommend scouting ahead to make sure there are not branches or any strainers. Once you make it out to the lake you will be dazzled with a beautiful view. The back side of sparks lake is filled with some stunning volcanic features. There is a large ridge that towers out of the lake out of the middle of nowhere. I have camped in the back and witnessed a Pine Marten which can be a rare sight. You will want to be cautious as there are indeed leeches in this lake. I have not been bitten by any myself, but we have caught one. Overall this lake is a great place to camp, but even better to explore with a canoe or kayak. This lake is wonderful unless there's tons of people. We normally turn away when we see multiple people parked on the side of the road. It's a favorite kayak spot and paddle board. Not much beach area and a lot of over 55's there enjoying their kayaks. The view is gorgeous and totally worth a visit.

The gravel road leading up to the lake is quite bumpy but I saw plenty of smaller vehicles maneuvering through it - slowly but surely.

Tam McArthur Rim appears on many 'must do' lists for Central Oregon hiking trails. Rightfully so…read more It's spectacular and accessible. Clocking in at about 6 miles round trip from the trailhead to the rim overlook, the trail gains some 1300 feet in elevation, so it's not easy. More like moderate. The trail can be negotiated with pretty much any athletic shoes. There is a steep section near the beginning and also somewhat near the end. Although it's fairly well marked and apparent, the trail does split in two during the second half and it's not apparent which path is the 'officail' one. It doesn't matter we took the rim-side path going up and the other one coming down. I suspect one may be designated the horse trail (a horse trail joins TMR along the way). From the rim you'll get great views of the Three Lakes area below as well as the Cascade Range volcanoes. When we hiked, the fires in the region caused limited visibility but Broken Top and the Three Sisters were nicely in view, as well as Bachelor looking the other way. Being super popular, I expected a lot of traffic on the trail even on a weekday. Not so much. we saw maybe six other groups/singles and had the overlook to ourselves for a good half hour. The trail continues on to Broken Top but even if you're not doing that, do hike a bit further along the rim (a few hundred yards) - there's a loop that comes back around to the trail to Three Lakes. This is a lightly shaded trail. You'll be among the trees for a good bit but more often you'll be exposed to full sun. As always with area hikes, check out Chris C's review too.

Things to note, depending on the time of year you go, the parking may be snowed in, there might be a lot of mosquitoes, and you may get fairly sunburned if you do not wear sunscreen. This trail starts out of three creeks lake parking lot. It is a pretty steep incline to start out as you approach the actual rim. Once you reach the rim you can start to ge t a good view of the lakes in the area to the east. Then the trails gets fairly flat and you start to follow a cliff that has a massively steep drop off so be careful. As you walk along this cliff you are treated to one of the most breathtaking views of the three sisters mountains in central Oregon. Depending on the time of year you are hiking you will encounter many snowfields that are quite a sit themselves. If you are a photographer looking for shots, be sure to wake up and leave early as the sun approaches this area fairly quick. Here is my review of clear lake for row boat use!…read more We got here at 930 am. Found the pay box at the entrance $9, no cash. There is an option to pay at the bottom which we should have done because they take the national park passes there (see picture). We were able to find parking in the main lot and there were a few people there. We weren't sure how the process of renting the boats or availability of life jackets. There is a shop that sells food, snacks, drinks, ice cream , and desserts. They also have a selection of fishing items, shirts, jackets. We paid for the boat - $60 for the large boat all day. The life jackets were plentiful and available. My husband rowed most of the time because I am not a good rower. We made it from the dock to the start of the river that you can't go past which is good since you could hear the rapids. The way to the left was a lot calmer and clear. We had a blast out on the lake. You could see down near the shallows but not in the middle of the lake. Make sure to bring sunscreen because there isn't much shade. The facilities are great!! Two bathrooms in the shop. Large tables to sit and enjoy a hot cooked meal or ice cream. I am so glad we were able to make a morning on the lake super easy and stress free! Next time I'm thinking of renting a kayak or a stand up paddle board. That would be fun! If you are in the area make sure to stop by early. As we were leaving, the parking lot was filled up so make sure to get there early! I hope my review and pictures help you plan for a successful visit to Clear Lake!

Be sure to arrive early to grab a good parking spot. The lot is small and fills up very quickly. Once parked, we walked up to the viewing area and took in these gorgeous falls. We followed the trail up further and discovered more waterfalls which I believe are called Middle Tumalo Falls. I believe we hiked a total of 4 miles and we really enjoyed hanging out here. The campground is divided into three loops, each with its own character. The North Loop offers water and electric hookups, with sites that are more widely spaced than the others--something I really appreciate. That extra room makes it feel quieter and more private, and it's probably where we'll book our next stay. The Middle Loop has full hookups, while the South Loop is the busiest, featuring full hookups as well as some cabins. . There are many hiking/cycling trails (dog-friendly), and the Deschutes River runs through the campground. There is a short hike to a waterfall, and a large dog park. Unfortunately, we were a bit restricted in our outdoor activities because of the smoke from the two fires in the area. There was actually ash falling on one of the days.
