Hands down my favorite bakery in Australia, one of top five in the world. I live in the US but when…read moreI lived in AU a few years ago, I loved coming to this bakery every week to see what they had to offer. I was craving their chocolate flourless raspberry hazelnut cake today which prompted me to come back and write this review, and see if they have any locations in the US :D All the desserts are absolutely gorgeous and delicate with rich flavor and texture. The lemon tart was lovely too. When I return to Brisbane I certainly will stop here again!

I dare you to walk in and not purchase anything from their range of tarts, cronuts, donuts, condiments, danishes or mini bar cakes. I drove that 20 mins I mentioned to try one of their much talked about cronuts. I'd had my heart set on the raspberry one (I'll do anything for raspberry) but alas had to settle for plain cinnamon and a salted caramel option. There was nothing wrong with the quality of the cronut - it was flaky and fluffy in equal parts. I just don't think this food trend is for me. Still, the figures don't lie and these babies are literally walking out the door for Flour & Chocolate. I'm yet to sample their equally famous donuts (give a girl time!) but their mini bar cakes always go down a treat for a simple morning tea when the parents visit or you just want to eat a small slice of heaven without the guilt of a whole cake still staring back at you.

Not often do you feel like you've walked into another country, and although quaint and near an IGA,…read morethis places is my little piece of German Pie. The cafe is clean, very German feeling (I've never been to Germany, but I have a vivid imagination), and might I say should change its name to King of Pies. As you walk past the tables outside and the hat stand with newspapers (including German), the entrance presents itself to you with pies. There is a very classic pie list of plain steak, chicken and bacon pies, but my personal favourite at $5 is the Steak and Mushroom. The pie gives you no crap (literally) and is packed full of flavour with tender pieces of mouth watering steak and stewed mushrooms, you won't be disappointed. The crust is non-flakey and crispy and the pies are hot... I am a big fan and sometimes, find myself craving one... particularly from this bakery (it does not help that it is also on the way to work). Walking in a little bit more you can see the devilishly delightful window of assortments of pastries and cakes. Also delicious and very neatly spread out. In the fridge next to the pies you will find German jams and other assortments of German accompaniments and in the fridge next to the cashier on the far inner corner your drinks. There is seating on the inside too, but it is a nice change from the usual streetside cafe. This cafe is clean (sorry for repeating, but it's true) and cool and the cakes, pies and other tasty treats are fresh, gourmet and so Yelpingly tasty. I don't often offer my four stars to bakeries, but this one is my personal favourite. PS. All sandwiches are on Turkish bread - my personal favourite - Turkey and Cranberry. Don't buy the pies until after 7am... they are nice and hot then.

I hereby challenge you to walk past the window of this cafe and not do one of the following: (a)…read moreStop and stare (b) Stop and stare and dribble just a little bit, or (c) Stop and stare and dribble just a little bit and promptly buy at least one sugary morsel of wonderment. Channelling the window displays of boulangeries in gay Paris, this place knows the key to effective marketing: people with taste buy with their stomachs. Ergo; I clearly have taste. But honestly, how could you possibly deny the lure of perfectly sculpted and singed spires of meringue upon a lemon meringue tart? Or the incredible hodge-podge of chocolate meringue curls sitting upon a gateau concord? Or the checkerboard design of a chocolate lavender tart? Maybe on an empty stomach, the sweet allure might be less magnetised, hence why they serve up a mean all day breakfast menu - featuring the likes of eggs Benedict on a croissant and scrambled eggs on brioche. It is upon consumption of these that you are more than likely going to sneak the lemon meringue tart home for afternoon tea. Don't say I didn't warn you.

The shop offers a very wide variety of pastries and cakes, I'm sure they have to clean the window several times a day to get the drool off from those stopping to stare. You can eat inside or out, and it's usually pretty busy so best to try and book a table in advance. It's a bit too hot for me in summer, the air con is not great inside (might be to keep the pastries nice I guess) so I usually restrict myself to take home treats unless it's winter :). Definitely a good place for high tea or to take an elderly relative out for brunch...fine china and service. Expensive but high quality food and drinks.
