Often a problem with 'getting adventurous' in an Asian Supermarket, you just never know if a product is going to deliver.....pretty packaging doesn't mean great food! But I have just got gold after gold at YES. It might be that I am just really lucky (insanely good looking people like myself often are), but I think it is more a case of the owners being very selective as to what they have in stock! I bought several items on this occaision, but hands down, the best buy of the day was the six-pack of pumpkin buns with red bean paste centers. Baked in the oven for 20 minutes and they were DELICIOUS. I'll be returning for those for sure! Overall, this is a great alternative to Woollies, particularly if you're looking for more variety in your herbs, spices, oils and sauces than what the big box store has. Prices are very reasonable, and the place is stocked to the brim with goods, is light, clean and well presented. You won't be disappointed.

The relevance of this side note is that I also buy all of the raw ingredients to make my own from Little Tokyo! #The most important is the Dried Bonito Flakes......little wriggly saltiness! Anywho, Little Tokyo has a small selection of a lot of things, giving the shopper a real slice of Japan and a little taste of home for others. If you are a little bit of a Samurai or a Ninja (I am the only one who is both) then you will love this place as much as I.

Little Tokyo is a store of the utmost quaintness. It's tiny and decorated with oriental cloths and banners, all of which are available for purchase. It stocks teapots and teacups, noodles, trinkets, sweets and even imported beer. For me, though, the real treasure is in the movie selection. There's a well-bodied collection of the movies of those wonderful animated film creators named Studio Ghibli, and though you can find their movies anywhere, it's nice to have them all here in one place. Then there's the wealth of films you've likely never heard of before, each one looking more ridiculous and, consequently, more fascinating than the last. The teapots and teacups are of very good quality, and priced appropriately. If you're in search of Japanese chinaware (geddit!?), there's a very able assortment here. I've never tried any of the alcohol (though I plan to), but the noodles are great and the treats work a treat.

You'll also find fresh vege, the likes of kai lan, bok choy, tofu and my favourite bean sprouts! If you like Asian can drinks, shop here for the wintermelon, soya bean and lemon barley variety. Beats having the same old Coke in your fridge. Fairly well stocked supermarket although the shopkeeper speaks limited English. A smile, nod and 'show her the mullah' will generate a smile of appreciation from this lovely shopkeeper.

The produce section is sadly small, but you can certainly find the basics (raise your hand, lemongrass). Any bottled or canned or dried stuff is well stocked, and at a much better priced than the W, the C, or the I to the A. Open til 6pm and all 7 days of the week. Certainly a plus.

They have the ability to cure some ailments, act as a beauty tool and most importantly arouse the flavour and taste in a beautifully prepared Indian cuisine. When friends come to me for Indian recipes ( I should charge them by the hour!), I always send them to the Spice Centre to top up their spice racks or sample a new recipe. Like the orange lentils which lends a creamy texture to your dhal dish, or the green lentils which offers an healthy alternative to other carbs infused dhal. From fennel, fenugreek, cardamom, cumin to the expensive saffron, they carry a wide variety of spices fit for a Maharajah's (King) kitchen. You'll find plenty of meat curry powder packets here. My favourite Baba's is widely stocked here and is one of the finest curry powders ever. From meat, seafood and kurma curry powder, there is something for everyone. No Indian dish is good without curry leaves, and I'm happy to report that a huge bunch of curry leaves is available for purchase at a mere $1. Indian savouries, sweets and desserts are also sold here, so it might be worth checking them out for a different menu variety. Bollywood fans will appreciate the huge volume of DVD's here, showcassing some of Bollywood's finest stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol et al. When I want some Bhangra fever, I head out here and rent a couple to amuse me during the weekend. For those who like natural products, try the henna as an alternative to your normal boxed hair dye or a bottle of coconut oil for thick, soft and bouncy hair. The owner is friendly and is absolutely helpful in recommending some of the best spices to go with your curries. Drop in and say namaste!

One that stands out a little from the local competition is the Time Supermarket on Grote. Yes they stock all of the regular offenders (as regular as they can be anyways), but the big extra is LIVE fishies and other Oceanic tasty future tid-bits. The have a long wall of fish tanks that house live cray, crabs, various swimmy things and the odd pearl producer. Although I am a relatevely heartless chef (and individual in general) I haven't been able to bring myself to buying any of that particular produce as of yet, but as I write I am feeling more and more blood thirsty.....STOP, Hammer Time!

As Scott pointed out, what's interesting about Time Supermarket is the fact that they stock live seafood. There aren't too many places that do this; even fishmongers sell you seafood that's already dead! It simply doesn't get any fresher than this! But I, like Scott, don't know if I could handle killing my own food. Even the thought of dropping a crab into a boiling pot of water makes me sad. In addition, you can buy lots of things in bulk here, such as large sacks of rice. There's plenty on offer in here - it's much like any other Asian grocer, just upscaled.

Colleen and Roland Smith have come a long way to open a modest shop. These two South Africans…read morerealised there were certain items you simply could not get around Adelaide, mostly consumable food items, and they had a special quality about them - it is a little sad when you go somewhere that does not sell your favourite things. So instead of fretting they decided it was a good thing to open a shop that sold the goods they like, and obviously other South Africans would like it as well. You can suggest what you want them to stock at their website which does not list all of their produce as such, but mentions a few of the least expected stuff like cookware that uses very little water, and gifts made in Cape Town; there are spices and tea in the shop for curry, drinking and alcohol like Peach Shots and wine from the vast dry land. South African wine is meant to be very nice indeed. Breakfast cereals and cookies, tinned items - all sorts. Go in and have a look or give Colleen a call and she will explain what they have over the phone. Very approachable and very nice people the two of them.

The Hong Kong Asian Grocery is located in Chinatown, across from Dumpling King. This place is good…read morewhen it comes to looking for herbs and spices, two-minute noodles, and bubble tea. They sell bubble tea in store, which you can order from outside. It's cheaper than Qubic and Chatime, and is just as tasty. The store itself is small and tightly-spaced inside. Be prepared to navigate through aisles and fellow shoppers within elbow range. It can be a pain if you're not in the mood and just want to get in and out with your groceries. The service is quite good though, and the staff are generally helpful. I was a bit disappointed with the limited range of Indomie, my favourite two-minute noodle brand. They only had three flavours. They do, however, sell Mi Goreng for around $12 for a box of 40. This place isn't bad and is open later than other Asian grocery stores around Chinatown, but for a wider range of stock I would recommend shopping around at those other stores.

These guys stock everything you'd expect from an Asian grocery store, which is in no way a disappointment. Whether it be vegetables, noodles, drinks, snacks, you name it - they'll probably have it somewhere in there. The aisles are a little narrow, so expect a lot of shuffling past confused shoppers. They recently also started selling macarons in-store - they're incredibly colourful and they seem to have a large range of different flavours. I'll remember to ask them next time if they're homemade - I can't resist a homemade macaron!

When I walked in, the place was empty except for a guy sitting on the end of the counter facing away from me playing on his laptop. He spent the entire duration of my visit on the computer, and if not for the entry bell I don't even think he would have known I was in the store. Jubba isn't just a food mart. In fact maybe 50% of the store is devoted to food, with the rest of it taken up with clothes and other household items. The food items are mostly middle eastern as are the clothes. The store claims to be halal, but the only meat I saw in the cabinet at the back were chicken wings and drumsticks. It's certainly an interesting place, and I'll definitely go back to check it out again. As for the service... well you don't go to these places for the service. You go to find something different.

I am a slave to spices! Name a dish and I will try to 'improve it' with some crazy spice mix that I…read morewhipped up previously. Scambled eggs? Add some dried basil flakes, tyme and pinch of Garam Masala (just shot from the hip there).....Cheese on Toast? Make that sucker burn your 'O-Ring' with a bit of chilli powder, Peri-Peri mix and some parsley! I made them up, but reckon they would go alright! My expansive spice cabinet has much to thank Indian Plaze on Glynburn Road. Previously the shop was across the way in the old DMV complex, and it is where I bought my first batch of spices to experiment with many moons ago. The shop look may have changed, but the content is still spicy goodness! Of course there are many other things on offer other than the spices, but that is what I go for so I generally just brush over the rest!

Thankfully, Indian Plaza now allows us to get all of our authentic spices and ingredients from a nearby place. As it's located right next door to 24fit, I'll usually visit the shop after I've had a workout at the gym. The smell of the spices as you walk through the door is enough to knock your socks off! I love coming in to browse the various kinds of spices, rice, curry mixes and snacks. If I feel like I've deserved it, I'll even pick up a couple of bags of savoury Indian snacks - they are simply awesome, and probably much healthier than potato chips (another vice of mine). In addition to food, the shop also stocks a lot of Indian cosmetics and remedies, such as oils, soaps, fragrances, and hair dyes. Products such as pure coconut oil provide great natural remedies for those with particularly thick, damaged or difficult hair - and you won't have to worry about putting any unnecessary chemcials on your head.
