It's the coffee roastery & cafe that's in the same row of old warehouses as the Miniatur Wonderland and Hamburg Dungeon near the Sandbrücke. This building in the Speicherstadt dates back to 1888. The café and shop is very popular. They have a color-code system that divides the coffee they roast into 5 different categories. The shop is very organized. Upon entering, it's not so clear where you need to go to be seated. You'll see the shop to the left, and the roastery & equipment is front & center. I believe this area may be reserved for coffee tasting tours, but I'm not sure. The hostess stand is all the way to the right side of the café. That's where you'll need to line up for table service. There was no wait for us. They happened to have a high-top available. The only 2 seats left in the café. It was bustling on a weekday. I could hear many different languages being spoken around us. It's as if we were in a museum café. The ambiance is very nice, but loud at times. Our waiter was very helpful when making our coffee selections. You get to choose the type of espresso and the coffee preparation. There are 4 different types. We both chose the Il Gusto Espressomischung in a latte macchiato form. I love how the menu gives you the different types of notes and finishes. She also provided a pastry & dessert menu. We selected 2 different kinds of franzbrötchen. One was made from spelt. Unfortunately, they didn't seem fresh. They would have been better served warm. The cinnamon rolls were dry, but had good flavor. Not too sweet, which is a good thing. The coffee was very good, but not as robust as we'd hoped it would be. We probably should have selected the Honduran one. It was still a lovely experience, and the service was great. There are clean restrooms as you're exiting from the other doorway. There were so many things that I wanted to buy at the shop. I was reminded of mom when I saw the old fashioned wooden coffee grinders. She brought one back from Germany when I was a teenager. She loved that little grinder. If anything, definitely make a stop here to shop for coffee, candies, and souvenirs. They have all kinds of local goods in one beautiful store. The chocolate covered cherries and strawberries that we purchased are excellent. You'll just have to experience it for yourself when in Speicherstadt. read more

Not sure I fully get the hype about this place. It's loud (from the machinery operating right in the middle of the space), uncomfortably warm (at least on a hot August afternoon) without much ventilation, and overall just sorta "meh." However, the service is really friendly and the coffee is above-average, so three stars it is. read more

Great gem of a coffee/roastery! It is located right next to Miniature World and hard to miss with the old truck out front. This place was recommended to me by a friend from Hamburg. It was super crowded when we went and, from what I can tell, everyone there was either German or from somewhere else in Europe (couldn't understand any of the languages spoken ha). The prices were very fair. I paid less than 5 euros for a smoked salmon croissant and about 3 euros for a cup of coffee. After you pay, the line takes you to the barista who makes the coffee in front of you. There is plenty of seating indoors and you can see the coffee roaster go off every few minutes or so. There is a gift shop that features coffee from around the world and lots of souvenir/gift options. Restrooms are located upstairs from the coffee shop. read more

A pretty place to crash after hours next door in either the dungeon or the miniatur wunderland. After both you will need coffee. We also desperately needed lunch - but only cake and more cake is served here so thats what we had... for lunch. Coffee was the best I had in Hamburg, so I was happy right then and there. I'm not much of a cake person when it comes to layered cakes with lots of frosting and cream, so the cakes didn't do it for me. But everybody else were content. And we didnt leave anything - seing as this was all we had to eat since the morning hours ;) The place is crowded in the afternoon. But probably not all day. And its so big and has a really high ceiling, so its not unbearable when its full. There's of course quite a wait for coffee, but I would say it's worth it. read more

I am pretty sure this place is heaven for coffee lovers! Just by being on the street you can get a whiff of the delicious coffee aroma and it only gets stronger as you walk into this place. I absolutely loved it! This establishment is a mixture of coffee warehouse meets small coffee shop environment. The cafe is really nice and has an old feel to it. The place is massive! On one side you have a coffee shop, the cafe and tables and chairs and right next to them you can see the warehouse workers. They take the cofee beans, roast them and package the cofee right infront of you. You can enjoy watching this process while drinking a cup of their delicious coffe. The aroma of the roasted coffee beans is absolutely wonderful. At the cafe they have alot of different delicious patries to go along with your coffee. The coffee itself is served french-press style and there is enough for a little over one cup. The coffee is probably the best cup i have had in a while! They even have sugar on each table and the milk is self serve. The prices are a little higher than usual but for the quality and the experience this place is well worth it! read more

It's only busy because all the tourist thinks they need to be here. If you are well-traveled - really, I am sure you have had freshly roasted coffee before... so this is not a must. Details of rating Coffee - freshly roasted. But expect to wait forever just to be allowed to line up. There's a person controlling who is allowed to come in and line up, but this process is not efficient and not everyone follows it! Hospitality and wait time - the person controlling the line is not consistent with who she decides to "allow" to come in, order and sit down. For me, she asked a series of questions such as details of what I wanted to order that I noticed she did not ask the German couple in front of me or the 2 American students that are "European looking" behind me. I replied to her calmly in German. I know very well as a person w an Asian face, that I'm used to the constant poor treatment and stereotypes people have at establishments serving certain foreigners. Sometimes I understand this is not consciously but subconsciously but it still happens. I waited 30 minutes altogether. This is not worth it. Life is too short to accumulate negative experiences and long waits, especially if you are a tourist in a very touristic area! I waited so I can have an open mind and see if it was all worth it (ambiance, food, coffee...). Especially when one can clearly see that there were a good amount of empty seats, but the person controlling the line wasn't very efficient in letting people go and order. In addition, I was asked to sit at the bar which no one sat at, and it had uncomfortable seats for a person with a back problem. I noticed she did not suggest this to the people in front of me or in back of me. I politely declined and even tried to suggest I don't mind sharing with another person if it needs to be. I saw other people sitting alone and even reading their newspaper, finished with this coffee. In actuality, I ordered even more things in value than people going there as a couple, so I don't understand why I kept being asked as if I was a low valued customer deserving low valued treatment. I think this point made their controlling of who gets to sit where altogether a bit stupid. Ambiance - I regret waiting for this experience because after I sat down the ambiance was so la-la. They purposely sat me next to two screaming babies which you can tell no one want to be near them. There were plenty of other seats that were available! I think their controlling of who sits where ahead of time before someone even gets to order their food just becomes too complicated because I don't even see all the patrons following this, they end up getting their food and sitting where they feel like it. I'm sure most of the times it's because people don't bother to remember where they have been assigned before they ordered a coffee - they are not even well awake yet! So complicated and inefficient. During my time here I will not come back and I do not recommend this to anyone who "looks foreign" to the locals. Patronize someone who will value your money and time better. :-) read more

This is a great combination of touristy, yet local, big coffee house feel, yet cosy atmosphere, right in the heart of the Speicherstadt, but without feeling overwhelmingly crowded with above average prices for coffee than at a small coffee shop, yet feels less expensive than a Starbucks and with more old world charm! I passed by this coffee shop for months before actually trying it out, because it is a famous coffee house so I figured famous meant crowded, touristy, and essentially not good quality coffee so I avoided checking it out myself. Then one day as I was giving a private tour of Hamburg, and one of my guests really wanted to try this coffee house that he read about in his world traveler's guidebook, because he really like to travel the world and try coffee every where he went, he was a Coffee Professional it would seem. So I caved in and said, "Sure, let's go take a look." When you first enter it looks really historical, well in a sense it is, the warehouse district is quite historic and in these very buildings, it was the heart of Hamburg's shipping back in the day where everything was dry stored to further transport to the rest of Europe. Their coffee and tea trade was and still is quite influential, as Hamburg is supposedly still number one in coffee and cocoa import. I heard it has to do because of a bit of rivalry at one point with the Dutch, since our harbor is still one of the most important in Europe alongside The Netherlands, and Belgium. The cafe is really nicely decorated inside and very large! They have real coffee bean bags sprawled all over for decor and you feel like you really are in the midst of a coffee roast house, well because you are! They roast coffee right there, so you can see it. You can purchase coffee here, have a coffee and enjoy lunch with a great view out onto the water that runs between the warehouses (Speicherstadt) if you grab a table near the window. Overall, I liked how it is a bit dark, but with natural sunlight during the day, you can sit between coffee roasted bags and exposed brick walls with a plethora of pastries to choose from to go with a nice cup of espresso or if the appetite picks up, grab something to eat, then continue outside and walk along the Hafencity. Tip: In this same warehouse building, down a block is the Dungeon and Miniature Wonderland exhibits/entertainment. So depending if you are looking to experience the world at your fingertips or learn about Hamburg historical tragedy, you can do so just around the corner! read more

It's hard to find coffee shop with big space in Germany but this place is totally spacious and crowded. You can buy beans and ground coffee here also with various choices and affordable price. I ordered filterkaffee with Nicaragua beans and it was made perfectly. It's mild but not too acid for my stomach. Definitely will come back here again! read more

Yes this is what I'm talking about! Fresh roasted beans - You can smell the coffee down the block. You can preview the antique roasting tools. The coffee is excellent! The pastries are excellent! I devoured a fresh apple cake. The baristas are nice to look at. :) There is a nice sized shop that allows you to purchase coffee from various regions. Wow, what a great cafe! The building itself is beautiful inside and out. You can see all the equipment used for roasting their coffee beans. Tons of seating which is good because it was packed and I imagine it's always like that. I had a pastry called wuss schnecken, basically a pecan cinnamon bun. Really delicious. We would have gotten coffee but it was too hot so we had some fritz sodas which were a nice alternative to the usual soda brands I'm used to. I would love to go back and sample the coffee that looked and smelled so good. read more
