You could upgrade your coffee to an iced coffee or tea for $0.50. The sandwiches also came with your choice of a side green salad or a pile of funyuns. Overall, a great place to have lunch. Came in here on a late Saturday morning. Outside is suspect however the interior was surprisingly comfortable and very clean. The chairs and tables fitted a social or working lunch atmosphere. There is also a second floor that I did t explore. Had mixed avocado sandwich with salad. Was pretty good and tasty and did not leave with an unhealthy feeling at all. I am only giving this place 4 stars because we did not have the opportunity to taste the food. This CHARMING little coffee shop is in a slightly run down strip mall on Young street. They have a large sign out front that says "free coffee"! We are not afraid to go into run down, tiny, mom and pop places that look schetchy because often times, these places are gonna be the ones where we find the real treasures! And boy did we find a treasure!!!!! Spero Spera is such a pleasant surprise! First of all, the owners (they don't speak English well) are sooooo nice, and soooo welcoming! I immediately felt at home! My husband just ordered a coffee, and I had a soy latte! The coffee was good. The inside of the shop is very comfortable, and clean. I love the decorations, and how they painted the walls. They have a loft upstairs as well which is great for studying or working. The best part is that they have free WiFi!! Spero Spera also has food-- sandwiches, and breakfast, but like I said, we did not get to sample those. We will be coming back, and I will update my review after that. But over all, just on the service alone, I will be coming back often!!! By the way, they do have free coffee with sandwiches. Hesitate giving this so few stars, because my main complaint isn't about the food or atmosphere: it's about how disrespectful and rude a staff member was to me. From what I can tell this cute nook in a sketchy parking lot is owned by a Korean husband and wife duo. The wife is extremely friendly, welcoming (greets every customer who comes in), accommodating and helpful. The husband treated me with such horrible disrespect that it has ruined the place for me (and I will be, on principle, recommending against it to my cohort of colleagues in my program - 6 of which populated the store on this Saturday). I have lower back problems, and the chairs there (at least upstairs) are hard and wooden, and not conducive to comfortable sitting. I came in, ordered a delicious avocado sandwich, and went to sit upstairs. I quickly found another chair on that floor to swap with my uncomfortable wooden one so that I could feel comfortable sitting and working on a paper. I get up at one point to go to the restroom and come back to find that my chair has been swapped out by the husband without any prior warning. I switch it back, and he comes and touches me roughly on the shoulder (a complete violation of personal space) and yells at me for moving the chair in broken English, claiming it "causes damage" (I assume he meant to the idea that dragging a chair across a hardwood floor might scratch it? But of course I didn't drag the chair, rather lifted it up and brought it over. Besides, many of the chairs have tennis balls on the bottoms to prevent just this). He keeps speaking to me roughly and incomprehensibly trying to get me to change, and when I press him for a better explanation he simply replies with "My shop. This my shop!". I refuse to change my chair and ignore him until he walks away, staying to finish my sandwich then leaving. His entire attitude during this affair was hostile and grumpy and very unpleasant - stark contrast to the kindly woman! Overall the ambiance is very "Japanese wood" cafe style, the place is very clean and food good (Hawai'i prices, but nice portions). No pastries of any sort I could see, but lots of condiments for your food. The place probably would have gotten 4 to 5 stars if it were not for the horrible experience I had with the husband. It's a shame for such a nice seeming business to be tarnished in my (and now my program-mates') eyes because of such an unwelcoming man. Advice: Stay for the food, avoid the grump! read more

If your looking for a cafe to chill for a long time (more than 2 hours), this isn't the spot for you. However, great spot to meet with friends for a couple of hours. They have free parking but only up to two hours. It's pasted on all their tables as a reminder to park for only two hours. Also you can't just chill here without buying something. They expect you to buy something if you're going to stay for a long time. So students please be aware! Customer care wasn't too bad. When I entered the cafe, with no hesitation a sweet Korean lady greeted me. Second floor has a good amount of seating. Watch the video to check it out. I tried the blueberry/banana smoothie which was pretty good. I still have yet to try their entrès such as their sandwiches. From its house-like wooden door entrance to the warm tones of the furnishings to the simple but smile-inducing (because it's that cute!) wall decor, Spero Spera makes me feel like I am visiting a friend's house. The food here is delish. I highly recommend the Mixed Avocado sandwich (avocado, carrot curls, alfalfa sprouts, cabbage, pickles, eggs, bacon, ham, American cheese, and house sauce). The house sauce is light but yummy and ties everything together beautifully. The Garlic Vegetable (garlic, kabocha, eggplant, onions, sweet peppers, and skim cheese) is also tasty, especially if you like grilled vegetables. I wish it came with more kabocha and less eggplant though (there was a lot of eggplant and I am not the biggest fan of eggplant...). Each sandwich comes with "a choice with chips or organic baby greens with baked carrots and ginger." Uh when you put it so temptingly, of course I would go with...the chips xD Yeah, you probably think I am crazy to choose chips over organic baby greens but I really, really wanted chips that night okay?! Next time I will be more logical and get the greens xD The drinks here are pretty good. If you like lemon/citrus as much as I do, you will enjoy their lemon soda. Hot chocolate is fine but nothing special. They have a pretty good selection of teas (props for having organic teas!). I don't drink coffee but according to others, their coffee here is awesome. Perhaps if I did, this place would get 5 stars from me! Going back to the friend's house analogy...I wasn't kidding. A lot of the regulars here greet and chat with the owners like they are family. People come here to study as they would any coffee shop, but I've also seen people play video games (on their computers) quietly and groups play cards happily. I'm SUCH a fan of this place. I've only been here about twice already but i have the itch to keep coming back & i don't want to shake this oh so good habit. I hate the parking here. Although this place isn't as big as normal coffee shops which are normally wide, it gives this place their own personality. Hungry? of course you are! They offer many different sandwiches which come with a choice of chips or salad. So far I'm hooked on the steak sandwich! Maybe i'll change it up next week? The very nice family service and cozy interior makes me give this place a 4 star rating. I arrived here about 11ish am on a Saturday morning to meet a friend. One of the owners approaches me to valet my truck as I pull into the small and somewhat crazy parking lot. Walk up to the place, and the exterior can fool you as you walk into and see the interior. Nice. My friend orders a tea and I have an ice latte. We share an avocado sandwich with toss greens for the side. It was cool. I ended up taking home half of the sandwich home because the other half was enough to feed both of us. I'd come back again to try some other items on the menu.
