Currently celebrating 25 years of successful business, Rajas is undoubtedly one of the best curry houses in Leeds. Despite it's surroundings (Harehills is slightly run down and nowhere near glitzy glam), it is a true diamond in the rough. Well known for it's quality and delicious dishes, it has been voted one of the Top Ten Indian Restaurants in the UK twice by the Times newspaper. The menu is an array of all the greats you would expect, at extremely competitive prices. Most starters are around £1 - £2 (apart from the fresh water prawns which are more like £5) and mains between £4 and £10. If there is something you would like which is not on the menu they will cook it for a service charge of 10%.

Proclamations of it's greatness didn't really fill me up with much hope of a good curry. It looks like many I've been in and walked past and when I've left I've felt completely deflated that I dared to get my hopes up. Even the "really and honestly it's a beauty" didn't do it for me. Walking through the doors, in the middle of my party, we were all given a hearty welcoming by the smartly dressed staff. We were shortly shown to our table, and the thing I was really impressed by was the open kitchen, making it easy to view how our future belly fodder was to be cooked and prepared. I'm always impressed with open kitchens, that nothing to hide approach instills much confidence in me. The menu. All the usual starters, sundries, mains and sides, every form of samosa, pakora, tandoori, korma, massala, dopiaza, biryani, roti, naan, soft drinks, beers, wines, juices, lassi. So what makes it special? The taste. Fresh, mouthwatering, full flavoured, homecooking. It really does earn the accolades that have been given to Raja's over the past 25 years. Several silver dishes adorned our table, steaming hot and smelling divine, the biryani my personal favourite, with the rice not dry and sad, but moist and delicious, no sign of a microwave in sight, and the curry sauce was a delicious accompaniment. Yum. We were well tended to throughout the evening, and the service quality matched the quality of the food. Price wise it was unbelievably reasonable, with it working out between £9 and £15 a head depending on meat free, meat, and prawn options. All of us had at least one drink and a main, and the rest either had a starter or a side order. Love it.

They don't have a booze license, but they almost encourage you to bring your own, or, as the place is surrounded by pubs and bars, you can always nip out and bring some back from any of the nearby places. The chicken korma I had was delicious, and my (much more adventurous) friend was singing the praises of the liver starter dish for the rest of the night, so it must have been something special. Moghul's don't just play it safe - they offer less traditionally stereotypical dishes such as fish and the aforementioned liver, and for this they must be praised. But most of the praise must be reserved for the prices - scandalously low for such fine cooking.

The size of a football pitch give or take a few metres ;) Everything tastes fresh and if you ask for it to be milder they can do it (usually a good sign that they make it fresh and it's not spooned out of a massive tub that they buy in! Then I ordered raita to go with some other bits, which was really just not very nice. And lastly, a few days ago I attempted butter chicken again and the sauce was a lot more watery than usual. Not terribly thin, but much less creamy. Sad times! Despite this, I think one last chance is in order. I did love them so much before, after all. They offer free delivery and accept cash only payments. They quote 45 minutes for delivery, but normally our delivery comes in about 30. I think the delivery time depends on how far you live from them though and I think i live on the edge of their 5 mile delivery radius. The food always tastes like its been cooked fresh and it always arrives piping hot. We've tried their Nan Kebabs. They have both kinds of kebabs if you prefer your kebab in a pita bread. Their nan bread by the way is awesome. I recommend the Chicken Tika Nan kebab. It's enough food for two people and is very nice. It's full of succulent chicken and veg. I cant eat a whole one - but it does hold up to reheating. It wasn't greasy the next day. We also order the meal deal for two which has their huge samosas. To be fair there is enough food in this meal deal for four people. We always have leftovers for lunch or dinner the next day. Overall the food is excellent and the price is right. Their service is also friendly and prompt. They offer a 10% discount to students & nursing homes when requested.
